Trump Continues to Lash Out at Supreme Court

February 23, 2026 at 12:47 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Donald Trump on Monday continued to lash out at the Supreme Court, days after a majority of justices, including two of his conservative nominees, struck down most of his global tariffs as illegal,” ABC News reports.

“In a series of social media posts on Monday, Trump wrote he had a ‘complete lack of respect’ for the nation’s high court and that ‘they should be ashamed of themselves.’”

Said Trump: “The supreme court (will be using lower case letters for a while based on a complete lack of respect!) of the United States accidentally and unwittingly gave me, as President of the United States, far more powers and strength than I had prior to their ridiculous, dumb, and very internationally divisive ruling.”

New York Magazine: Trump punishes “supreme court” by revoking capital letters.

Peter Mandelson Arrested in London

February 23, 2026 at 12:19 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Former British ambassador to the U.S. Peter Mandelson has been arrested by London police on suspicion of misconduct in public office,” Reuters reports.

“Mandelson, 72, was fired from the most prestigious posting in Britain’s diplomatic service in September, when the depth of his friendship with Jeffrey Epstein started to become clear.”

EU Hits the Brakes on U.S. Trade Deal

February 23, 2026 at 11:13 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The European Parliament on Monday halted the ratification process of a sweeping trade deal with the United States, the latest fallout from the Supreme Court striking down most of President Donald Trump’s tariffs,” NBC News reports.

Trump’s Approval Hits New Low

February 23, 2026 at 10:58 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

CNN Poll: “Just 32% of Americans now say that Trump has had the right priorities, while 68% say he hasn’t paid enough attention to the country’s most important problems. That’s the president’s most negative reading on that question to date during either of his terms in office.”

“At the same time, Americans say, 61% to 38%, that Trump’s policies will move the country in the wrong direction rather than the right one. And Trump’s job approval rating among all adults remains mired at 36%.”

Aileen Cannon Won’t Allow Release of Jack Smith’s Report

February 23, 2026 at 10:50 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Special counsel Jack Smith’s final report on Donald Trump’s alleged mishandling of classified records and obstruction of justice at Mar-a-Lago after his first term will not be released, a Trump-appointed judge in Florida ruled Monday,” CNN reports.

“The decision by US District Judge Aileen Cannon, who threw out the case Smith brought against the president before he was re-elected, is a major win in Trump’s efforts to keep the special counsel’s findings forever hidden from public view.”

Politico: Judge Cannon permanently blocks release of Jack Smith report.

The Republican Party Has a Nazi Problem

February 23, 2026 at 9:33 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Tom Nichols: “Over the past few months, during his agency’s chaotic crackdowns in Chicago and Minneapolis, the U.S. Border Patrol chief Greg Bovino has worn an unusual uniform: a wide-lapel greatcoat with brass buttons and stars along one sleeve. It looks like it was taken right off the shoulders of a Wehrmacht officer in the 1930s. Bovino’s choice of garment is more than tough-guy cosplay (German media noted the aesthetic immediately). The coat symbolizes a trend: The Republicans, it seems, have a bit of a Nazi problem.”

“By this, I mean that some Republicans are deploying Nazi imagery and rhetoric, and espouse ideas associated with the Nazi Party during its rise to power in the early 1930s.”

Trump Reverts to First-Term Tumult

February 23, 2026 at 9:29 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Donald Trump’s first year back in office won praise from supporters for its efficiency in passing legislation, enacting a trade agenda and rapidly deporting immigrants,” Bloomberg reports.

“His second year, however, is already suffering from many of the same problems that plagued the first term — erratic messaging, policy reversals, plummeting poll numbers and intraparty tussles.”

Wes Moore’s Redistricing Plan Is Poised to Die

February 23, 2026 at 8:49 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “Despite a public pressure campaign without modern precedent in this deep-blue state, which typically resolves intraparty fights behind closed doors, Tuesday’s unofficial deadline to act on mid-cycle redistricting ahead of the 2026 midterms will come and go without fellow Democrats heeding Moore’s demands for a vote.”

Marco Rubio Has a ‘Rainy Day’ Account

February 23, 2026 at 8:44 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Dispatch: “Marco Rubio is vowing not to challenge Vice President J.D. Vance for the Republican nomination, a decision that appears to preclude the secretary of state from launching a 2028 White House bid.”

“But many GOP insiders believe that commitment is less ironclad than it seems…”

“Also sparking speculation that Rubio is keeping his options open is the existence of a political nonprofit group founded and run by close political advisers.”

GOP Lawmaker Made Explicit Sexual Requests to Staffer

February 23, 2026 at 8:40 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Embattled Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-TX) made explicit sexual requests to his late congressional staffer who repeatedly resisted, according to text messages obtained by 24Sight News from a forensic extraction of Santos-Aviles’ phone conducted as part of an active legal claim by her widower’s attorney.

The messages add to a growing body of evidence of an improper relationship — allegations Gonzales denied as recently as last week.

James Talarico Ignored Party ‘Retreads’

February 23, 2026 at 8:03 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The New Yorker profiles Texas U.S. Senate candidate James Talarico (D):

In May, the former Senate candidate Beto O’Rourke convened a Zoom meeting with Congressman Joaquin Castro, former congressman Colin Allred, and Talarico, to discuss assembling a statewide slate with strong Democratic candidates for governor, lieutenant governor, and attorney general. Talarico was seen as a potential gubernatorial candidate who could distract Greg Abbott, the powerful incumbent. As one person familiar with the discussion said: “I don’t know if it was exactly like ‘Here’s our sacrificial Talarico lamb for governor’—but pretty much.”

Instead, Talarico argued that his youth and his legislative experience made him better equipped to be a senator. “I told them the fact that I was new, and different, and had no D.C. connection was a huge advantage. They were all retreads—which I said lovingly.”

O’Rourke was nonplussed: “I told him, ‘If you end up being the guy who runs for Senate against the Republican machine, you will want friends on that ticket.’ ” Instead, “James came in, like, ‘I don’t care what you guys are doing with your little huddle. Fuck all y’all, I’m doing this.’ He blew everything up in his excitement to make the case for himself.” O’Rourke called Castro afterward and said, “What the fuck?”

But he also said: “You’re not going to win in this game unless you’re really fucking confident.”

Quote of the Day

February 23, 2026 at 7:06 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“I don’t think he can take this loss and then be seen as backing down on Iran.”

— Former Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, quoted by the Wall Street Journal, on President Trump losing at the Supreme Court on tariffs.

All Signs Point to Military Action in Iran

February 23, 2026 at 7:02 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Playbook: “The massive military buildup continues, with flight tracking websites showing mysterious flights headed toward Diego Garcia and elsewhere overnight. Boat-spotters (yes, they exist) photographed the fully laden USS Gerald R. Ford entering the Mediterranean on Friday, meaning it should be within strike range any day.”

“The simple fact is that America has never built up a military force like this and not used it. It’s hard to believe they’ll all be sent home without firing a shot.”

Will Trump Ignite a Fractured Washington This Week?

February 23, 2026 at 7:00 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rachel Bade: “President Donald Trump’s State of the Union has the potential to explode into prime time like a box of Roman candles tossed into a bonfire — and the stakes couldn’t be higher for his presidency.”

An Update for Readers

I’m still in the hospital — but as you might imagine, it’s impossible for me to stay away from Political Wire.

If anything, the extraordinary outpouring of support in the comments and in my inbox has only pulled me closer. I can’t possibly respond to every message, but please know how much this extended family means to me. Your kindness has been felt more than you know.

Chris Riback has been terrific stepping in, and with any luck we’ll have a new episode of Trial Balloon this week — even if it comes with the ambient soundtrack of hospital monitors.

Thank you, as always, for reading.

The Voters Who Will Make Up a Blue Wave

February 23, 2026 at 5:58 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

As Donald Trump prepares to deliver his State of the Union address tomorrow night, a new Washington Post poll offers a blunt assessment: the country isn’t buying what he’s selling.

Trump’s job approval stands at 39%, with 60% disapproving — including a striking 47% who strongly disapprove.

Tariff Turmoil Leaves Treasury Markets Dazed

February 23, 2026 at 5:42 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Far from being a source of relief, the Supreme Court’s takedown of President Donald Trump’s tariffs has infused new risks and uncertainties into trade policy, U.S. debt and the dollar,” Reuters reports.

Eric Swalwell and Tom Steyer Surge in California

February 23, 2026 at 5:36 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“When Eric Swalwell and Tom Steyer jumped into the California governor’s race, much of the political class rolled its eyes — two failed presidential hopefuls with seemingly thin bases and no track record statewide,” Politico reports.

“Three months later they’re surging, with poll after poll placing them among the top three Democrats in the race.”
