Inside the House GOP Rebellion Over Epstein

July 24, 2025 at 5:42 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “The revolt of House Republicans who favored releasing Epstein case documents surprised White House officials and multiple members of GOP leadership. Trump officials in particular, who are used to House Republicans rolling over to the president’s every whim, were especially stunned at the increasingly public and blunt pushback.”

“But some senior GOP aides privately acknowledged they could see Epstein-fueled pressure brewing into a bigger and bigger problem. They could tell how sensitive the issue was for the White House after Johnson appeared to break with President Donald Trump over the matter by calling for full transparency from the DOJ on a conservative podcast.”

“The White House fumed over the perceived off-script moment, with Johnson going on to say days there was ‘no daylight’ between House Republicans and Trump.”

Trump Loses His Grip on the House

July 24, 2025 at 5:35 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Donald Trump has lost control of the Jeffrey Epstein scandal,” Punchbowl News reports.

“The House Oversight Committee – the top investigative panel in the House – will issue an array of subpoenas related to the Justice Department’s Epstein investigation, rebuffing Trump’s pleas to his base to move on from the matter.”

“Republicans on the Oversight panel tried to soften the blow by also agreeing to subpoena former President Bill Clinton and First Lady Hillary Clinton over their interactions with the disgraced financier, as well as all the attorneys general and FBI directors since Epstein first came under criminal investigation in 2005.”

“Yet suddenly, the White House finds itself not getting any cover from Hill Republicans. In fact, GOP lawmakers are teaming up with Democrats to seek depositions and documents.”

Washington Post: Trump struggles to contain furor over Epstein as House lawmakers seek subpoenas.

Progressives Rake In Cash as Democrats Remain Divided

July 24, 2025 at 5:33 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Rep. Marcy Kaptur, a Democrat who is the longest-serving woman in congressional history, has raised $678,667 so far this year in her bid to keep her competitive northwestern Ohio district in her party’s hands in next year’s midterm elections,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) has raised almost 23 times as much for her campaign committee. The $15.4 million she has collected makes her the biggest House fundraiser this year, nearly doubling the total of the chamber’s most powerful member, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA).”

“The contrast between the two women highlights how Democratic small-dollar donors, an increasingly important group as more fundraising moves online, often are biased in their support of ideological favorites rather than focusing on just those in competitive races.”

“Among the 10 incumbent Democrats who raised the most from individual donors this year, six are members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus.”

July 24, 2025 at 5:32 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The White House said President Trump would visit the Federal Reserve on Thursday afternoon. He is set to join a previously arranged tour for several White House advisers of the construction site where the Fed is renovating its headquarters,“ the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Presidential visits to the central bank are rare—but so is the kind of sustained pressure campaign Trump and his advisers have dialed up in recent weeks to demand Fed Chair Jerome Powell and his colleagues lower interest rates.”

July 23, 2025 at 9:37 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Columbia University reached a deal with the Trump administration, ending a confrontation that disrupted U.S. higher education and sparked a contentious renegotiation of academia’s relationship to the federal government,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“As part of the deal, Columbia will pay $200 million to the federal government over three years to settle allegations the school violated antidiscrimination laws. The school also agreed to settle investigations brought by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission for $21 million.”

“In return, the Trump administration will restore nearly all of the hundreds of millions of dollars in research grants it had pulled from Columbia back in March.“

Appeals Court Dings Birthright Citizenship Order

July 23, 2025 at 9:34 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A federal appeals court said Wednesday that President Trump’s executive order curtailing birthright citizenship is unconstitutional,” CBS News reports.

“The policy, which has been the subject of a complicated monthslong legal back-and-forth, is currently on hold. But Wednesday’s decision appears to mark the first time that an appellate court has weighed in on the merits of Mr. Trump’s attempt to end birthright citizenship for many children of undocumented immigrants by executive order.”

Democrats Seek to Exploit GOP Divisions on Epstein Files

July 23, 2025 at 8:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“It’s not an exaggeration to say that Democrats have been struggling to find a message that breaks through in the era of Donald Trump. Now, they have found one that has long been a rallying cry for the MAGA base: Release the files of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein,” the Washington Post reports.

“With the House set to go home Wednesday for the August recess, Democrats intend to continue hammering their Republican colleagues on Epstein. They plan to argue that Trump’s support for his administration’s decision not to release the files earlier this month — and GOP lawmakers leaving Washington without addressing the issue — means Republicans are protecting the rich and powerful at voters’ expense.”

July 23, 2025 at 7:30 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Once fighting a lonely battle against Trump, GOP Rep. Thomas Massie has found an issue that is winning him more Republican friends and political allies than he has had all year: his push to release the Jeffrey Epstein files,” NBC News reports.

“Many of Trump’s MAGA allies on and off Capitol Hill are frustrated with Trump and top officials in his administration for dragging their feet in releasing the government’s remaining documents and records related to Epstein, the late financier and convicted sex offender.”

“But they’re rooting for Massie, who has leaned into the fight in recent weeks and made it his sole mission to get the files released.”

Josh Shapiro Rebukes Mamdani

July 23, 2025 at 7:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro (D) told Jewish Insider that New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani (D) failed to condemn “blatantly antisemitic” extremists.

Said Shapiro: “When supporters of yours say things that are blatantly antisemitic, you can’t leave room for that to just sit there.”

He added: “He left open far too much space for extremists to either use his words or for him to not condemn the words of extremists that said some blatantly antisemitic things.”

Said Thune: “In some fashion, in some way, he’s going to have to handle it and deal with it. And it sounds like, yeah, that’ll be a September issue.”

July 23, 2025 at 6:01 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A House subcommittee on Wednesday voted to subpoena the Department of Justice for files in the sex trafficking investigation into Jeffrey Epstein after Democrats successfully goaded GOP lawmakers to defy Trump and Republican leadership to support the action,” the AP reports.

“Democrats on a subcommittee of the powerful House Committee on Oversight made a motion for the subpoena Wednesday afternoon, just hours before the House was scheduled to end its July work session and depart Washington for a monthlong break.”

“Three Republicans on the panel voted with Democrats for the subpoena, sending it through on an 8-2 vote tally.”

What Else Does Elon Musk Know?

July 23, 2025 at 4:32 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

In early June, just after a very public falling out with Donald Trump, Elon Musk made a stunning allegation: “Trump is in the Epstein files. That is the real reason they have not been made public.”

He deleted the tweet two days later — but the Wall Street Journal has now confirmed its substance.

Roy Cooper Will Run for Senate in North Carolina

July 23, 2025 at 3:42 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Roy Cooper is expected to announce his campaign for the North Carolina Senate as soon as Monday,” Politico reports.

“The popular, former two-term governor’s entrance into the Senate race — for a seat Republican Sen. Thom Tillis is leaving open with his announcement last month that he won’t seek reelection — is likely to transform the Senate race into the most competitive of 2026.”
