Zelensky Wasn’t Going to Repeat His Oval Office Disaster

August 19, 2025 at 9:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Atlantic: “Volodymyr Zelensky clearly learned some lessons from his calamitous Oval Office meeting with Donald Trump back in February. That much was apparent today just from the Ukrainian leader’s outfit. Back then, Zelensky took heat from Trump allies who felt that a suit—and not his trademark wartime ensemble—would have been more appropriate attire for an audience with the American president. Today, Zelensky showed up in a black blazer and a black collared shirt, earning praise from the same MAGA-aligned reporter who’d needled him about his sartorial choices six months ago—and from Trump himself.”

“Zelensky, who met with Trump in the Oval Office before he was flanked by European leaders for a broader discussion, adjusted more than his fashion. He also heeded the urgent advice of his continental counterparts: Show Trump gratitude, and don’t take the bait.”

Trump Falls for Zelensky’s Dapper Look

August 19, 2025 at 9:15 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The fates of nations have rarely, if ever, been decided by sartorial choices,” the South China Morning Post reports.

“But Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was certainly hoping that a spot of fashion diplomacy on Monday could get US counterpart Donald Trump to help his country reach a peace deal with Russia.”

“Despite the life-and-death matters unfolding in Ukraine, much of the speculation among the White House press corps was about whether Zelensky would wear a suit.”

Political Novice Makes a Long-Shot Bid to Oust Collins

August 19, 2025 at 9:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Democrats who have tried and failed for years to unseat Senator Susan Collins, the veteran moderate Republican from Maine, are pinning their hopes this time on recruiting Janet Mills, the state’s seasoned Democratic governor, to challenge Ms. Collins’s bid for a sixth term next year,” the New York Times reports.

“But Ms. Mills, 77, is being circumspect about her plans for what could be one of the most competitive Senate races in the country. And some Maine Democrats believe she is too conventional a choice to defeat Ms. Collins, a powerful political force who has demonstrated her staying power.”

“Enter Graham Platner, a 40-year-old oyster farmer and former Marine who served three tours in Iraq and one in Afghanistan, and is set on Tuesday to announce a long-shot challenge to Ms. Collins, with a campaign focused on making life better for his state’s working class.”

August 19, 2025 at 8:52 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“One by one, Indiana’s Republican U.S. representatives are coming out in support of redistricting in Indiana, weeks after Vice President JD Vance’s visit to Indianapolis,” the Indianapolis Star reports.

“The pressure campaign on X mounted at the same time that state House Republicans met privately off Statehouse grounds to discuss President Donald Trump’s push to redraw maps mid-decade, which to date has proven unpopular among the state lawmakers.”

Top Air Force Chief to Exit

August 19, 2025 at 8:50 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Democrats Face Their Own Realignment

August 19, 2025 at 6:43 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Democrats are tortured by what they should stand for now and heading into the 2028 elections. But a number of current trends suggest a likely answer: their own version of a populist, anti-establishment, MAGA-like makeover,” Axios reports.

“The debate is usually framed as liberal vs. centrist, Rahm versus AOC. But big, fast changes in AI, media habits and general public angst point to a more sweeping shift in ideas and attitude.”

Latino Voters Sour on Trump

August 19, 2025 at 6:28 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Reuters/Ipsos poll: “The latest poll showed Hispanics, a group that swung toward Trump in last year’s election, have also soured on the president. Some 32% approved of his performance in the White House, matching their lowest level of approval for Trump this year.”

Trump Pushes to Eliminate Mail Ballots

August 19, 2025 at 6:23 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump — in a series of misleading statements on social media and public comments — said he would work to get rid of mail-in ballots and sign an executive order “to help bring HONESTY to the 2026 Midterm Elections,” the Washington Post reports.

“The comments are another sign that Trump is trying to alter the rules around voting ahead of the midterms.”

Said Trump: “You’re not going to have many Democrats get elected… It’s bigger than anything having to do with redistricting. Believe me.”

Associated Press: Trump vows to change how elections are run. The US Constitution doesn’t give him that power.

New Branding for the Megabill

August 19, 2025 at 6:15 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Josh Hawley Irks Republicans as He Carves Out 2028 Lane

August 19, 2025 at 6:05 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Since he took office in 2019, Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) has sought to place himself on the front lines of orienting the Republican Party around a mix of economic populism and social conservatism to appeal to an increasingly working-class base,” NBC News reports.

“But now, with Republicans in full control of Congress for the first time since he arrived in Washington, Hawley’s mission is coming into conflict with members of his party, who are frustrated with his tendency to follow the beat of his own drum as he grows more critical of some of their policy aims.”

A senior Senate aide said it appeared that Hawley was “trying to load up policy prescriptions to lay the groundwork for a 2028 presidential bid.”

Macron Skeptical Putin Wants Peace

August 19, 2025 at 6:01 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“There must be a push for peace to end the war between Russia and Ukraine, but French President Emmanuel Macron is skeptical that Russian President Vladimir Putin is ready to resolve the conflict,” NBC News reports.

Said Macron: “When I look at the situation and the facts, I don’t see President Putin very willing to get peace now. But perhaps I’m too pessimistic.”

He also said “the optimism of your president is to be taken seriously. So if he considers he can get a deal done, this is great news, and we have to do whatever we can to have a great deal.”

Trump and Zelensky Hit Reset

August 19, 2025 at 6:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Playbook: “For Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, yesterday began with a diplomatic whirlwind. It ended with a great sigh of relief.”

“Hours of meetings in Washington — Zelensky with President Donald Trump; Trump with a coterie of Europe’s most powerful leaders; all of the above together in the Oval Office — culminated in a ‘breakthrough,’ in the words of NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte: Trump expressed a willingness to participate in security guarantees for Ukraine.”

“On the international stage, that alone amounts to a new dawn not only for the relationship between the U.S. and Ukraine, but also between Zelensky and Trump — and America’s with some of its closest transatlantic allies.”

“It is ugly.”

Can Zelensky Trust Trump?

August 19, 2025 at 5:34 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“For President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine, a lot is riding on how much he can trust President Trump,” the New York Times reports.

“Mr. Trump offered only vague assurances on Monday that the United States would play a role in guaranteeing Ukraine’s safety if Mr. Zelensky were to cut a deal with President Vladimir Putin of Russia to stop the fighting.”

Said Trump: “We’re going to make sure it works. And I think if we can get to peace, it’s going to work. I have no doubt about it.”

Bloomberg: “US and European officials started work on bolstering Ukraine’s military, part of a package of security guarantees that will open a path to a landmark meeting between presidents Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelenskiy.”
