Democratic Socialists of America See Surge in Membership

July 3, 2026 at 5:58 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The leaders of Democratic Socialists of America chapters are seeing a boost in energy ahead of November’s midterms,” NOTUS reports.

“That momentum is on the heels of primary wins by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani-endorsed candidates Darializa Avila Chevalier, Claire Valdez and Brad Lander in New York. Earlier this week in Colorado, Melat Kiros beat out another House incumbent, fueling speculation that this is the ascendant wing of the Democratic Party.”

“Chapter leaders say they’re feeling that energy on the ground. They’re getting interest from voters, new members, and people interested in running for office.”

Can Socialism Appeal in a Swing State?

July 3, 2026 at 5:58 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “The progressive movement is surging this election cycle, as liberal voters — furious with a Democratic establishment they view as old, tepid and beholden to corporate interests — have ousted incumbents. In particular, socialism (a term politicians once strained to distance themselves from) has surged in popularity on the left, as candidates with that label have won House primaries in New York City, Denver and Philadelphia.”

“Wisconsin, which Mr. Trump won in 2024, presents a riskier gamble.”

America’s 250th Turns into a Fight over God and Country

July 3, 2026 at 5:56 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The White House and its allies are steering America’s 250th birthday toward prayer, repentance and divine guidance, with critics saying a national celebration is becoming a Christian one,” Axios reports.

“One side sees Trump politicizing a national birthday party. The other sees a long-overdue chance to restore faith to the center of America’s founding story.”

”Trump-aligned organizers are leaning into prayer events, conservative Christian partners and language about rededicating America as ‘one nation under God.’”

Wall Street Journal: “Burgum is point man for Trump’s Washington makeover, tackling everything from troublesome algae blooms in the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool to an effort to revitalize aging golf courses in the city.”

“The portfolio has made Burgum, a former tech entrepreneur and governor of North Dakota, a constant fixture at the president’s side, giving him an unusually prominent role in Trump’s second term amid the country’s 250th birthday celebrations.”

Pete Hegseth Had Bombshell Plan to Cut Troops in Europe

July 2, 2026 at 8:50 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth was planning to head to Brussels last month to deliver what would be a bombshell announcement in a meeting with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s top military chiefs,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“The U.S., he planned to say, was preparing additional cuts to its forces in Europe that would go beyond the canceled deployment of an armored brigade to Poland and the earlier withdrawal of an infantry brigade from Romania… But Hegseth’s proposal was nixed after it was shared with Marco Rubio—President Trump’s national security adviser—and other senior officials.”

MAGA Base Stays Quiet After Trump Earns Billions

July 2, 2026 at 7:52 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump’s $2.2 billion in personal earnings during his presidency has been met largely with silence from his MAGA base, which has been increasingly willing to revolt against policies they view as an abandonment of his promises to put everyday Americans first,” the New York Times reports.

“Far-right members of Congress, prominent media pundits and grass-roots activists have criticized Mr. Trump’s war with Iran and openly broken ranks to demand the release of the Jeffrey Epstein files. They have accused him of prioritizing his own interests over the needs of the voters who elected him to office.”

“But few far-right voices aligned with Mr. Trump have criticized him over the scale of his personal haul, reported this week, or the conflict inherent in his status as a major cryptocurrency industry operator and its top policymaker.”

July 2, 2026 at 7:51 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Said Trump: “Anything they do, because the presidency is so powerful … if they buy a cupcake company, well, the energy to make the cupcakes, is you know, sort of like, how’s my energy policy?’

He added: “Almost anything they do, if they want to buy a truck … if they buy an energy efficient truck, they have insider information.”

July 2, 2026 at 7:39 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

July 2, 2026 at 5:35 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A federal judge on Thursday confronted a Justice Department lawyer about President Trump’s plans to build a championship-level golf course on a peninsula in Washington, after she ordered the department to come before her with more specific details about possible construction,” the New York Times reports.

“It was the latest in a long series of standoffs and mistrustful interactions between federal judges and the Trump administration over the president’s second-term efforts to remake parts of the capital.”

Don Jr.’s ‘Amazon of Guns’ Could Make Millions

July 2, 2026 at 5:10 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Donald Trump Jr. helped take an online retailer known as the ‘Amazon of guns’ public last year,” Reuters reports.

“Now, GrabAGun, where the U.S. president’s son is a shareholder and board member, could reap a windfall from a proposed rule change at Trump’s Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives that would make it easier to ship guns directly to people’s homes.”

“If finalized, the rule would be among the most consequential changes to the U.S. gun policy in two decades, potentially driving huge growth in online gun sales.”

July 2, 2026 at 4:36 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Supreme Court on Thursday cleared the way for a former Fox News reporter to be required to reveal a confidential source or pay $800 a day in court fines, in a case with broader implications for the work of journalists,” the New York Times reports.

“Catherine Herridge, the reporter, had refused to reveal her sources for articles she wrote about a scientist who was investigated by the FBI. She asked the justices to intervene after she was ordered by a federal judge to pay daily sanctions until she disclosed the information.”

Job Seekers Are Giving Up

July 2, 2026 at 4:33 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“On the surface, a June drop in the unemployment rate helped provide some upside to what was an otherwise downbeat jobs report — but it was for all the wrong reasons,” CNBC reports.

“That’s because the decline in the jobless level to 4.2%, the lowest in a year, came largely from an exodus of workers from the labor force.”

“In fact, the measure of the working-age population either employed or looking for a job slid to 61.5%, the lowest since March 2021. Excluding the Covid-era jobs market, it was the lowest labor force participation rate in exactly 50 years.”

Reuters: Weak jobs, declining labor force, could renew Fed debate over state of labor market.
