Fired FTC Commissioner Warns of Potential for Abuse

June 29, 2026 at 2:52 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Rebecca Slaughter, the former Federal Trade Commission member whose firing was upheld by the Supreme Court on Monday, warned that the justices allowed for the possibility of abuse of presidential power,” the New York Times reports.

Said Slaughter: “Today’s ruling makes it possible for presidents to fire watchdogs who won’t put politics over principle, and replace them with lap dogs. It’s a recipe for corruption; working families will pay the price.”

Trump’s Pick for Ethics Czar Is a Political Operative

June 29, 2026 at 2:49 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The federal government’s ethics czar has never not been a lawyer. One in four employees in the Office of Government Ethics is a lawyer,” NOTUS reports.

“President Donald Trump’s nominee to lead the agency, Michael Chamberlain, does not hold a law degree. He is, however, a loyal Trump ally.”

“Chamberlain’s background has raised concerns among former OGE employees and good government groups who are questioning whether Trump’s nominee has the skill set and the independence to direct what has historically been a nonpartisan and legally-minded office.”

Supreme Court Tightens Rules on Location Data Searches

June 29, 2026 at 1:47 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“When police officers sweep up location data from cellphone users near crimes scenes, they must comply with the Fourth Amendment, the Supreme Court ruled on Monday in a modest victory for privacy rights in the digital age,” the New York Times reports.

“Such so-called geofence searches have become a popular tool for law enforcement, but critics say they put at risk the personal data of everyday Americans and violate the Fourth Amendment, which prohibits unreasonable searches and seizure.”

Another Trump Payment to Stop Offshore Wind

June 29, 2026 at 1:46 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Trump administration on Monday said it would pay Duke Energy $129 million to abandon its plans to build an offshore wind farm off North Carolina,” the New York Times reports.

“It was the fourth such deal struck by the administration to throttle the development of offshore wind power, a source of renewable energy that President Trump has disparaged for decades.”

Bloomberg: Trump pulls plug on Carolina wind project as cancellations mount.

Supreme Court Set to Rule on Birthright Citizenship

June 29, 2026 at 1:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Supreme Court will hand down all of its remaining opinions from this term Tuesday, setting the stage for a blockbuster day with decisions expected on birthright citizenship, transgender athlete bans and campaign finance,” The Hill reports.

“Chief Justice John Roberts made the announcement as the court concluded its session Monday.”

‘Chaos Will Follow’ Ruling Allowing Trump Firings

June 29, 2026 at 12:31 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“In a slashing 43-page dissent from the Supreme Court’s decision on Monday allowing the president to fire the leaders of independent agencies for any reason or no reason, Justice Sonia Sotomayor wrote that the majority had destroyed the separation of powers and upended settled constitutional law. The ruling, she wrote, ‘promises to unleash only chaos’,” the New York Times reports.

“Justice Sotomayor summarized her dissent from the bench, a rare move reserved for profound disagreements.”

Trump Renews Threat to Fire Fed Governor

June 29, 2026 at 12:29 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump renewed his intention to try and fire Lisa D. Cook from the Federal Reserve on Monday, saying he would look for a way to oust her after the Supreme Court blocked his previous attempt to fire a sitting governor at the central bank,” the New York Times reports.

Justices to Weigh Arizona Citizenship Voting Requirements

June 29, 2026 at 12:27 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Supreme Court will consider the legality of two Arizona laws requiring prospective voters to produce proof of citizenship to register, the court announced on Monday,” the New York Times reports.

“The court’s acceptance of the case for its term that begins in October opens a new front in the justices’ review of rules around voting and federal elections, including the consideration of race when drawing congressional districts and a Mississippi state law governing mail-in ballots.”

“It also means the justices will be wading into an issue that has become a pivotal fight for the Trump administration.”

Bloomberg: State proof-of-citizenship voting law gets Supreme Court review.

June 29, 2026 at 11:11 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Supreme Court declined to take lawyer Alan Dershowitz’s appeal of his defamation lawsuit against CNN,” Deadline reports.

Campaigns Go All-In on AI

June 29, 2026 at 10:55 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Republican and Democratic candidates and strategists who were once wary of A.I. tools or overwhelmed by them are now rushing to give their campaigns an A.I. upgrade. Those who do so could reap the rewards in the midterm elections in November and, ultimately, in the 2028 presidential campaign. Those who don’t could fall far behind.”

“But this seismic shift in how politicians run for office is also being met by pushback on multiple fronts, including from voters and campaign staffers who feel distrustful of A.I. and fearful about its potential to wipe out jobs, devour energy and harm the planet.”

Supreme Court Blocks Trump’s Fed Firing

June 29, 2026 at 10:28 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Supreme Court rejected President Trump’s bid to fire Federal Reserve governor Lisa Cook with little legal scrutiny but gave him free rein to fire officials at other independent agencies for any reason,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“The pair of decisions on Monday effectively delivers a split verdict on Trump’s second-term effort to exert maximal control over the executive branch.”

Supreme Court Rules Late-Arriving Ballots Can Be Counted

June 29, 2026 at 10:16 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Supreme Court on Monday ruled that states can count ballots that arrive after Election Day, a persistent target of President Donald Trump,” the Associated Press reports.

“The decision rejected a Republican-led attack on laws in more than half the states and the District of Columbia that permit mailed ballots to arrive and be counted some number of days after the election, provided they are postmarked by Election Day. The outcome spares officials the headache of changing their ballot rules just a few months before the 2026 midterm congressional elections.”

CBS News: Supreme Court says states can count mail ballots that arrive after Election Day.

Justices Let Sex Abuse Verdict Against Trump Stand

June 29, 2026 at 9:48 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Supreme Court on Monday declined a request by President Trump to review a $5 million civil judgment against him after a jury found in 2023 that he sexually abused and defamed the writer E. Jean Carroll,” the New York Times reports.

“The announcement by the justices did not include any reasoning, and no public dissents were noted.”

CNN: Supreme Court declines to hear Trump appeal of E. Jean Carroll sexual abuse verdict.

Some Justices Pine for an Old Colleague

June 29, 2026 at 9:33 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“For nearly three decades, during the Supreme Court’s most difficult and divisive moments, one man could be counted on to help keep the peace,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“With anecdotes about modern architecture and knock-knock jokes he learned from his grandchildren, Justice Stephen Breyer was known for lightening the mood, even as he fought for pragmatic center-left rulings on a court that tilted to the right.”

“It has been four years since Breyer, who was nominated by President Bill Clinton in 1994, retired. But now, as relationships on the court appear to be fraying, several current justices have privately expressed that they miss his presence, both as a friend and for his ability to lower the temperature, according to people close to the court.”

June 29, 2026 at 9:24 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Another Week That Could Electrify the Left

June 29, 2026 at 9:14 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Playbook: “In case you hadn’t noticed, Democratic insurgents are having a moment. In Colorado tomorrow we’ll find out if that’s shifting to momentum, as a quartet of closely watched primary races reach their climax.”

“Mountain high: In the context of last week’s New York City earthquake, what had once looked like a relatively low-key primary date tomorrow is now anything but. We have a professional Donald Trump-basher threatening to block a senator’s path to the governor’s mansion. We have a political novice — not even born when her veteran opponent first took her seat in Congress — on the verge of an extraordinary ouster. We have a key midterm battleground shaping up to be fought sharply from the left. And we might — might — even see one of Colorado’s best-known politicians face a radical progressive challenge.”

“New York is one thing, but Colorado is another. Expect to learn plenty tomorrow night about how insurgent messaging really lands outside of a coastal metropolis, and what that means for the future of the Democrats — and perhaps the presidential contest in 2028.”

Another Week of Republican Chaos?

June 29, 2026 at 8:41 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Punchbowl News: “When we left you last week, Johnson had to recess the House after less than two days because Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) and a gaggle of other Republicans vowed to vote against any rule. These conservatives are upset about the Senate’s inaction on the SAVE America Act, the voter-ID-and-citizenship bill that’s become Trump’s obsession. The question that will dominate this week: what can Johnson do to end this Republican disaster?”

“This will begin in earnest today at 4 p.m. when the House Rules Committee meets to consider three bills slated for the House floor.”

NBC News: “It’s a bad time to be a normal House Republican.”

How Private Money Is Reigniting the Space Race

June 29, 2026 at 8:37 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

NBC News: “NASA’s push to return to the moon and historic levels of investment in the private space sector have fueled a gold rush to the stars. Roughly a decade ago, a new wave of investor interest in the commercial space sector began, but experts say this time is different.”

“The pace of rocket launches has broken records this year, with more than 125 orbital liftoffs worldwide. Of that total, 75 were by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, whose recent splashy IPO heralds how lucrative this next chapter of commercial space flight could be.”
