Iran’s Khamenei Says U.S. Military Bases No Longer Safe

May 26, 2026 at 9:20 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Bloomberg: “Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei said US military bases in the Middle East will no longer be safe after the war, declaring victory and a new regional order even as talks to end the conflict continued.”

Said Khamenei, in a written statement: “The clock cannot be turned back; the nations and lands of the region will no longer be a shield for American bases.”

“The comments indicate Iran’s view that the conflict has fundamentally changed the balance of power in the oil-rich Persian Gulf, weakening the US and establishing deterrence that will compel Gulf Arab countries to coexist with the Islamic Republic.”

America Descends Into a Flattery-Failure Doom Loop

May 26, 2026 at 9:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Paul Krugman: “Outside the MAGA bubble, Americans are increasingly seeing Trump as the loser he is. He has failed on every front. Manufacturing employment is down, inflation is outpacing wages, consumer sentiment is at a record low, mortgage rates are up. Trump’s war of choice has led to utter humiliation. According to current polls, Americans are giving Trump extremely low approval ratings, both overall and on every major issue — even border security.”

“Inside the MAGA fantasy bubble, however, Trump’s reign is hailed, almost literally, as the Second Coming.”

The Leftward Lurch That Wasn’t

May 26, 2026 at 8:46 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The conventional wisdom about Democrats in the Trump era is that the party has lurched hard to the left — and, in the process, pushed away the more moderate voters it needs to win.

But the data doesn’t really support that story.

Trump Remains Deeply Unpopular

May 26, 2026 at 7:50 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Strength In Numbers/Verasight poll finds 37% of U.S. adults approve of Trump’s job performance with 60% disapproving.

On the generic congressional ballot, Democrats lead Republicans 51% to 43% among registered voters — an 8-point margin — and 51% to 41% among all adults. Democrats have led the generic ballot in every poll we’ve conducted.

Quote of the Day

May 26, 2026 at 7:44 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“I think we’re on the verge of something that ultimately history will decide was a catastrophic loss for the United States.”

— Former Trump national security adviser John Bolton, talking to CNN about the Iran war.

Reviewing the Trump Phone

May 26, 2026 at 7:38 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

CNET: “My first thought on opening the box was: This is not the shade of matte gold I would have chosen for my flagship phone. It was kind of giving dehydrated pee vibes.”

An Analysis of Trump’s Cabinet Meetings

May 26, 2026 at 7:32 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “On average, at least one of every six sentences either flattered Mr. Trump, gave him credit or criticized his political opponents.”

An Election Denier is the GOP Front-Runner in Georgia

May 26, 2026 at 7:26 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Burt Jones, the Republican front-runner in the Georgia governor’s race, presents his considerable efforts to overturn Donald Trump’s election loss in 2020 as a badge of honor.”

“On the stump, he even boasts about it.”

Said Jones: “You’ve got to think back to who was standing up — who was in the ditch, in the foxhole — with everybody when we were fighting in 2020.”

Trump Heads to the Doctor Again

May 26, 2026 at 7:24 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Wall Street Journal: “The president is scheduled to have physical and dental exams Tuesday at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. Trump’s health has been under growing scrutiny in the past year, and he turns 80 next month.”

“What information the White House decides to disclose about the president’s health ultimately could be up to Trump himself, but based on his social-media behavior, his sleeping habits are, well, unorthodox, and the bruising on his hands doesn’t seem to have gone away.”

NewsNation: Trump returns to Walter Reed for third checkup in 13 months.

Republicans Have an Age Problem Too

May 26, 2026 at 7:06 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

NOTUS: “While Democrats have been engaged in a more bitter generational fight and received more media attention for it — take, for example, former President Joe Biden, former Sen. Dianne Feinstein and D.C. delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton — some Republicans say their party, which is led by soon-to-be 80-year-old Donald Trump, the oldest president to be inaugurated, has its own ‘age problem.'”

Republican Congress Faces Major Pileup Before Midterms

May 26, 2026 at 7:03 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Semafor: “Republicans are running into a sudden new problem after punting on their immigration enforcement bill: time.”

“It’s not clear how Republicans will handle opposition to the Trump administration’s $1.8 billion ‘anti-weaponization’ fund when they return in June; some think they may need to rethink how the bill is devised given its exposure to amendments that will touch on the controversial fund.”

“It’s one problem on a longer list of challenges that the GOP has dwindling floor time to address.”

“The Senate is scheduled to be in just eight weeks until the August recess, then just three weeks in the fall before the midterms, while the House will be in for 10 weeks ahead of the election.”

Rubio Says Iran Deal Will Take ‘a Few More Days’

May 26, 2026 at 6:27 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Tuesday that the United States and Iran may require “a few more days” to reach an agreement to end the war between the two countries, dampening hopes for a quick resolution to the military conflict that began three months ago, Politico reports.

Trump’s Revenge Tour Heads to Texas

May 26, 2026 at 6:10 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Donald Trump is poised to welcome yet another victory on his revenge tour today despite the risk it could have on his Capitol Hill priorities,” Politico reports.

“Ken Paxton has emerged as the clear front-runner against Sen. John Cornyn in the final days of the Texas Senate runoff after Trump in the eleventh hour boosted the scandal-plagued MAGA ally — a decision that has alienated some of his own members in Congress.”

“It’s the latest example of Trump targeting members of the GOP he sees as insufficiently loyal to him. But several Republicans in Texas and Washington warn that the bad blood could jeopardize the president’s legislative agenda and risk deflating major GOP donors needed to help the party keep control of the seat and Congress.”

Washington Post: A runoff in Texas primary will test Trump’s grip on GOP.

Politico: Republicans worry the Cornyn-Paxton fight is tearing their party apart.

Inside the Burst of Secret Super PACs

May 26, 2026 at 6:07 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Punchbowl News: “Something strange is happening in several crucial House Democratic primaries.”

“Mysterious super PACs are quietly emerging and spending heavily to boost candidates whom many top Democrats view as less formidable, or even toxic, in general elections. Three of these stealthy groups spent a collective $4.3 million so far in five primaries in Nebraska, Pennsylvania, California, Texas and New Jersey.”

“The source of these groups’ funding is obscured. That’s somewhat common in the post-Citizens United era of dark money. But what’s truly baffling is that it’s nearly impossible to tell who is behind these super PACs. And their operators are becoming incredibly skilled at covering their tracks.”

Federal Prosecutors Struggle With Grand Juries

May 26, 2026 at 6:03 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Grand juries are the heart of the criminal justice system, the inner sanctum where prosecutors, working unchecked and in secret, have enormous power to indict their fellow citizens,” the New York Times reports.

“But under President Trump, the Justice Department has had serious difficulties presenting cases to grand juries, running into problems that would have seemed unthinkable a year ago.”

“In the past several months, prosecutors have repeatedly failed to persuade grand juries that the cases they have brought warrant criminal charges. And if it were not unusual enough, they have also been admonished at least three times since last November by federal judges who have accused them of misconduct.”

Iran Warns of Retaliation After U.S. Strikes

May 26, 2026 at 6:02 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps vowed to retaliate against violations of the cease-fire, after a renewed bout of fighting in which the U.S. struck missile launchers in southern Iran,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“In Monday’s exchange of fire, the U.S. sank two Revolutionary Guard ships it said were attempting to lay mines in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran responded by launching surface-to-air missiles at U.S. planes, prompting American attacks on missile launchers near Bandar Abbas, a U.S. official said.”

Trump Fumes at Holdups Over His Proposed Ballroom

May 26, 2026 at 6:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Donald Trump has made little secret that his planned White House ballroom is a top priority, invoking the project more frequently than most other issues. And in recent weeks he has raged at anyone — including a federal judge, a Senate official and a local historian — whose actions threaten to slow construction,” the Washington Post reports.

“On Monday, the president shared on social media a copy of a legal filing that closely resembled his own words and contended that the weekend’s shooting outside the White House campus proved the need for a ballroom.”

Trump’s War Is Staggering to an Incoherent Defeat

May 25, 2026 at 8:40 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Tom Nichols: “No one yet knows the details of the Iran deal that President Trump has been teasing on social media for the past day or so. The president himself has admonished his followers not to ‘listen to the losers, who are critical about something they know nothing about.’”

“But as this war stumbles to a close, it is clear that the president, too, is lost: He didn’t know what he was doing when he began it, and now he doesn’t know how to get out of it.”
