“House Democrats were left stunned on Tuesday night after two of their colleagues — including the chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus — lost primaries to left-wing challengers,” Axios reports.

“Why it matters: The New York primary results are poised to double the bloc of Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) in Congress, something that is not sitting well with some moderates.”

CBS News: Mamdani influences New York City’s congressional primaries with 3 big wins.

New York Times: “It’s an open question whether Mr. Schlossberg’s defeat signifies the demise of a decades-long political dynasty or simply a setback for a family for whom tragedy and accomplishment have been meted out in equal measure.”

“But the rejection of Mr. Schlossberg, the only grandson of the former president, is undoubtedly a rebuke of the most influential line of the Kennedy family tree.”

“Mayor Zohran Mamdani and his allies swept a series of congressional primaries in New York City on Tuesday in a remarkable show of strength for the insurgent left that sent shock waves through the Democratic Party,” the New York Times reports.

“Mr. Mamdani’s candidates toppled a pair of incumbents backed by the city’s political establishment, including major labor unions and the House Democratic leader. Another candidate backed by the mayor won an open House seat, and a handful of democratic socialist challengers he supported were winning down the ballot.”

“For months, Mr. Mamdani threw himself and his energized political organization into the three marquee congressional contests, campaigning late into the night in the race’s final days and calling the election a referendum on the direction of the party.”

“State Assemblymember Claire Valdez (D) prevailed in the tumultuous primary to succeed retiring Rep. Nydia Velázquez (D-NY), notching the Democratic Socialists of America a win in one of the left’s most high-profile proxy wars,” Politico reports.

Former New York City comptroller Brad Lander (D) is projected to win his Democratic primary challenge against incumbent Rep. Dan Goldman (D) in New York, according to Decision Desk HQ. 

“House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) is minimizing the significance of New York’s congressional primaries, telling reporters the ideological direction of his party won’t rest on a few House seats,” Axios reports.

“It is all part of a careful balancing act in which Jeffries is trying to stop a democratic socialist takeover while avoiding open conflict with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.”

Said Jeffries: “I don’t think we’re on opposite pages. You can ask him whether he thinks we’re on opposite pages. He doesn’t believe we’re on opposite pages.”

Washington Post: Mamdani is backing leftist candidates taking on incumbents in NYC. 

There are also closely watched races in New York, Maryland, South Carolina and Utah.
