“Some of President Donald Trump’s aides have advised him against shifting the U.S. position on independence for Taiwan to favor China,“ NBC News reports.

“The aides have privately expressed concern that Trump, who is pushing to reach a sweeping trade deal with China, may choose to ignore their advice, the people with knowledge of the discussions said. They said they worry that Trump could walk away from long-standing U.S. policy on Taiwan or more subtly shift the U.S. position by framing it with new language.”

Axios: Trump-Xi meeting is high stakes for Taiwan.

“President Trump said that the U.S. expects to lower tariffs on China in exchange for cooperation in cracking down on the export of chemicals used to produce fentanyl,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Trump said that he would discuss such an agreement when he meets with Chinese leader Xi Jinping in South Korea on Thursday.”

The Senate voted to block President Donald Trump’s tariffs on goods imported from Brazil, delivering another bipartisan rebuke of the president’s trade policies, the Washington Post reports.

The vote was 52 to 48. Sens. Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, Mitch McConnell, Rand Paul and Thom Tillis joined all Democrats in backing the measure.

Trump imposed the tariffs after Brazil’s government sought to prosecute the country’s former president, Jair Bolsonaro, a longtime Trump ally.

U.S. military officials involved in the attacks on vessels suspected to be trafficking drugs “have been asked to sign non-disclosure agreements, a development that raises new questions about a military buildup that Venezuela fears may lead to an invasion,” Reuters reports.

“The step is highly unusual, given that U.S. military officials are already required to shield national security secrets from public view, and comes as lawmakers in Congress say they are being kept in the dark about key aspects of the mission.”
