MAGA Questions Biden’s Cancer Diagnosis

May 19, 2025 at 7:10 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Playbook: “There are accusations spreading like wildfire — including from Trump’s son, Don Jr. — that aspects of this tragic diagnosis stretch back further than last week, and that Biden’s cancer was kept quiet while he was in office. Certainly, plenty of doctors say it would be unusual — though far from impossible — for prostate cancer this serious to suddenly emerge out of the blue. Far-right activist Laura Loomer’s claims from back in July 2024 that Biden had a terminal illness are now being reamplified by his critics. Pro-MAGA X users are also reupping Biden’s statement to camera in 2022, when he bluntly said he had cancer, which aides insisted at the time was a misunderstanding.”

“None of which proves anything. Publicly available facts are sparse, and plenty of people are outraged this is even being discussed at such a sensitive time. But it does matter.”

Trump Finally Admits Americans Pay for Tariffs

May 19, 2025 at 6:55 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Trump administration conceded this weekend what economists, CEOs and consumers already knew: Americans pay for tariffs,” Axios reports.

“Nearly a decade of Trump trade arguments held that foreign countries, not Americans, paid the ultimate cost of a trade war. But the president and his economic team now acknowledge that tariffs are raising prices for everyone, from industrial ports to retail storefronts.”

Vance Decided Against Israel Visit

May 19, 2025 at 6:52 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Vice President J.D. Vance considered traveling to Israel on Tuesday but decided against it due to the expansion of Israel’s military operation in Gaza,“ Axios reports.

“The U.S. official said Vance made the decision because he didn’t want his trip to suggest the Trump administration endorsed the Israeli decision to launch a massive operation at a time when the U.S. is pushing for a ceasefire and hostage deal.”

Trump’s ‘Golden Dome’ Could Cost Hundreds of Billions

May 19, 2025 at 6:49 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Pentagon has submitted small, medium and large options to the White House for developing “Golden Dome,” President Donald Trump’s vision for a cutting-edge missile shield that can protect the US from long-range strikes that will likely cost hundreds of billions of dollars,“ CNN reports.

“Trump is expected to announce his preferred option – and its price point – in the coming days, a decision that will ultimately chart a path forward for funding, developing and implementing the space-based missile defense system over the next several years.”

“Whatever option Trump opts for, it won’t be cheap; $25 billion has been carved out in next year’s defense budget for the system, but the Congressional Budget Office has estimated the US could have to spend more than $500 billion – over the course of 20 years – to develop a viable Golden Dome.”

“The project will also present a bonanza for private contractors as the government won’t be able to build it alone, with companies including Elon Musk’s SpaceX in the running for highly lucrative contracts related to the system.”

Trump Stops Enforcing the Rules He Doesn’t Like

May 19, 2025 at 6:08 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “Across the government, the Trump administration is trying a new tactic for gutting federal rules and policies that the president dislikes: simply stop enforcing them.”

The Stark Math on the GOP Tax Plan

May 19, 2025 at 6:03 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“House Republicans pushed President Trump’s ‘big, beautiful’ tax-and-spending bill past a key hurdle late Sunday night, but the last-minute grappling has them colliding with a stark reality: The plan won’t reduce federal budget deficits and would make America’s fiscal hole deeper,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“The current proposal would increase projected budget deficits by nearly $3 trillion through 2034, locking in tax cuts and spending increases that outweigh reductions in spending on Medicaid and nutrition assistance. While Republicans, who have vowed to reduce red ink, say higher economic growth will fill the gap, budget analysts across the political spectrum have panned the Republican plan, warning that it worsens the U.S. fiscal picture.”

House Budget Committee Passes GOP Megabill

May 18, 2025 at 10:43 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump’s “one big, beautiful bill” passed the House Budget Committee tonight — the vote was 17 to 16 — after four conservative holdouts voted “present,” the Washington Post reports.

The Rules Committee meets tomorrow or Wednesday, then it goes to full House vote later this week.

Republicans Race to Avoid Another Megabill Setback

May 18, 2025 at 7:39 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Speaker Mike Johnson and House leaders are racing to salvage their GOP megabill from another embarrassing setback just hours away from a rare 10 p.m. Sunday night vote,” Politico reports.

“A rebellion of four ultraconservatives tanked a key Budget Committee vote Friday afternoon. It served a devastating blow to President Donald Trump and GOP leaders — blocking the massive legislation spanning Trump’s domestic policy agenda after the president publicly called on Republicans to unite behind it and advance the megabill without delay.”

May 18, 2025 at 4:08 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former President Joe Biden was diagnosed with an “aggressive form” of prostate cancer, according to a statement from his personal office Sunday, and it has spread to his bones, CNN reports.

Biden and his family “are reviewing treatment options with his physicians.”

Bonus Quote of the Day

May 18, 2025 at 3:55 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Well, tariffs are taxes, and when you put a tax on a business, it’s always passed through as a cost. So, there will be higher prices. The only trade that means anything is the individual who buys something. That’s the only real trade. And that by very definition, if it’s voluntary, is mutually beneficial, or the trade doesn’t occur.”

— Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), quoted by Politico.

Bessent Admits Tariffs Will Raise Prices

May 18, 2025 at 3:55 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Some consumer prices will likely rise due to tariffs, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent acknowledged on Sunday, even after the White House publicly warned retailers against it,” Axios reports.

Russia Unleashes One of Its Largest Drone Barrages

May 18, 2025 at 3:52 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Russia targeted Ukraine on Sunday with one of its largest drone bombardments of the war, an apparent show of force only a day before President Trump is expected to talk with President Vladimir V. Putin as he pushes Russia to accept a cease-fire deal,” the New York Times reports.

“The drone barrage, in which an estimated 273 exploding drones and decoys were recorded in the skies across Ukraine, killed a woman and injured several other people.”

Trump Stays Active in New York Politics

May 18, 2025 at 3:51 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump is playing an unusually active role in New York politics — getting involved in local campaigns, commandeering municipal projects and putting a thumb on the scale for both Republicans and Democrats,” Axios reports.

“Trump is no longer a New York resident, but the city where he built his empire still has a hold on him.”

“And the administration isn’t afraid to get heavy-handed with the president’s former hometown.”

Pope Leo Snubs J.D. Vance

May 18, 2025 at 12:39 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Pope Leo XIV spurned J.D. Vance on Sunday, offering him a quick greeting after his inaugural mass while holding extensive private meetings with other world leaders,” the Daily Beast reports.

“The first American pope shook Vance’s hand during a brief, 17-second exchange during the procession line after the mass.”

GOP Tax Bill Would Curtail Power of Courts

May 18, 2025 at 11:52 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Tucked deep in the thousand-plus pages of the multitrillion-dollar budget bill making its way through the Republican-controlled U.S. House is a paragraph curtailing a court’s greatest tool for forcing the government to obey its rulings: the power to enforce contempt findings,” the AP reports.

“It’s unclear whether the bill can pass the House in its current form — it failed in a committee vote Friday — whether the U.S. Senate would preserve the contempt provision or whether courts would uphold it. But the fact that GOP lawmakers are including it shows how much those in power in the nation’s capital are thinking about the consequences of defying judges as the battle between the Trump administration and the courts escalates.”

House Budget Committee to Meet Again

May 18, 2025 at 11:51 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

At 10 p.m., the House Budget Committee is due to reconsider the massive taxation-and-spending package it rejected Friday.

Kamala Harris Deliberates Over Her Political Future

May 18, 2025 at 11:35 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

CNN: “The 21st of July looms for Kamala Harris and the much smaller world of advisers left around her. It’s the day she’s set to lose the US Secret Service protection that former vice presidents are granted for six months — six months from the inauguration that she believed would be her own after Joe Biden gave her 107 days to win the 2024 election when he ended his reelection bid last July 21.”

“By this date, multiple people close to her say they increasingly believe Harris will have finally ended the intrigue over her political future and be preparing for a 2026 California gubernatorial run. Though she hasn’t made up her mind yet, several of those people tell CNN they expect an official launch would likely come in August or soon after Labor Day.”
