Corporate America’s Newest Activist Investor Is Trump

August 23, 2025 at 6:39 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Corporate America has built up defenses against the likes of Carl Icahn, Nelson Peltz and other corporate raiders who have rattled the cages of chief executives, pushing for higher stock prices. Now companies have a new investor to worry about: the president of the United States,” the New York Times reports.

“President Trump has inserted the government into U.S. companies in extraordinary ways, including taking a stake in U.S. Steel and pushing for a cut of Nvidia’s and Advanced Micro Devices’ revenue from China. Last month, the Pentagon said it was taking a 15 percent stake in MP Materials, a large American miner of rare earths.”

“And on Friday, Intel agreed to allow the U.S. government to take a 10 percent stake in its business, worth $8.9 billion.”

Mortgage-Fraud Accusations Are Trump’s New Weapon

August 23, 2025 at 6:34 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Trump administration has a new weapon at its disposal in its efforts to take down Democrats and their appointees: mortgage records,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Members of the administration have now alleged three public officials have committed mortgage fraud, referring each to the Justice Department. The administration has signaled that it has just gotten started: U.S. Pardon Attorney Ed Martin was recently tapped ‘to investigate fraud by public officials in mortgages,’ according to a letter Martin sent.”

“The targets have denied wrongdoing, but the probes represent an aggressive new spin on opposition research that has long dug into tax records and financial disclosures public officeholders have to make. Mortgage applications go beyond the typical disclosure requirements.”

A Partisan Shot Fired in Texas Reverberates

August 23, 2025 at 6:20 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Molly Ball: “The upshot of the redistricting wars looks likely to benefit Republicans overall. And the episode seems fated to stand as yet another illustration of Trump’s willingness to use his stranglehold over his party to maximize his power, polarizing the national landscape and trampling long-held norms in the process, and leaving the opposition dazed.”

Justice Department Releases Ghislaine Maxwell Interview

August 22, 2025 at 3:01 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Trump administration on Friday released the transcript of a top Justice Department official’s interview with Ghislaine Maxwell, the former associate of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

ABC News: “The woman thought to have the most direct knowledge of Jeffrey Epstein’s decades-long sex-trafficking operation claims there was no client list, no blackmail scheme and — to her knowledge — no high-profile Epstein associates who committed illicit acts in connection with the notorious sex-offender’s crimes.”

“Maxwell told Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche that during her time with Epstein — which ranged from the early 1990s to the mid-2000s — she never witnessed nor heard of any inappropriate or criminal activity by President Donald Trump, former President Bill Clinton, nor any of the well-known men who associated with Epstein.”

Why the Democrats Are Struggling

August 22, 2025 at 2:52 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Julia Azari: “Since January 2025, American politics has shifted decisively away from being based on legitimacy, and is instead now mostly a game of power. In other words, the Trumpist GOP – which controls the federal government and much at the subnational level – uses whatever power is available to them, without much concern about legitimacy. Typically, in a democracy, uses of power would be limited by what can be justified in terms of democratic values, accepted practices, and norms like reciprocity…”

“The Democratic Party is not well-suited to this style of politics. This isn’t entirely a knock – a party that’s deeply wedded to arguments about legitimacy instead of thinking about ways to use raw power isn’t the worst thing. But the particular way that the Democratic Party operates and has evolved makes it especially poorly equipped to respond to this year’s developments.”
