Trump Crashes the Fed’s Consensus

September 17, 2025 at 10:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Donald Trump’s onslaught against the Federal Reserve, and his installation of a top lieutenant on the central bank’s board, have made the Fed’s interest rate decision Wednesday one of the most politically charged ever,” Politico reports.

“On the one hand, the outcome — a small rate cut — is unlikely to be affected by either the addition of White House chief economist Stephen Miran or the continued presence of Lisa Cook, whom Trump is trying to oust from the board. But the vote could be a lot messier than usual at the consensus-driven central bank as Fed officials grapple with two problems they can’t fight simultaneously — a weakening job market and rising prices.”

“Ben & Jerry’s co-founder Jerry Greenfield is leaving the ice cream brand after 47 years, saying that the independence it once had to speak up on social issues has been stifled by parent company Unilever,” ABC News reports.

Hundreds of Alligator Alcatraz Detainees Drop Off the Grid

September 17, 2025 at 9:51 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“For the hundreds of men who were detained at Alligator Alcatraz, entering the gates of the makeshift migrant detention center in the Everglades meant exiting the labyrinthine but familiar federal immigration process and entering what several immigration attorneys described as an alternate system where the normal rules don’t apply,” the Miami Herald reports.

“As of the end of August, the whereabouts of two-thirds of more than 1,800 men detained at Alligator Alcatraz during the month of July could not be determined.”

An Impossible But Still Dangerous Threat

September 17, 2025 at 9:42 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

In the wake of Charlie Kirk’s assassination, Donald Trump, JD Vance and other top officials are openly threatening to silence their political opponents.

Attorney General Pam Bondi even suggested “hate” speech isn’t protected under the First Amendment, before being forced to walk it back.

GOP Senator Stopping Public Events

September 17, 2025 at 9:15 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) “said the forward-facing portion of her work as a senator is currently under review. As a result, outside events with large crowds could become a thing of the past for elected officials,” the West Virginia Metro News reports.

Said Capito: “I probably can’t go on parades… I think anybody who is a public figure is going to think more than twice about the kind of exposure events present.”

Scott Bessent Made Contradictory Mortgage Pledges

September 17, 2025 at 8:53 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent once agreed to occupy two different houses as his ‘principal residence’ at the same time, mortgage documents show — the same kind of contradictory pledges that President Donald Trump has been using to try to oust Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook,” Bloomberg reports.

Democratic Voters Want Shutdown Fight

September 17, 2025 at 8:50 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Data for Progress survey “shows seven in 10 Democrats support their party withholding votes unless Republicans make changes even if it risks a shutdown, while a similar share backs their party taking a ‘firmer stand’ than they did in March.”

“What’s more, Democrats are arguing voters will blame the Republicans who control government for a shutdown, and the poll shows their voters share that view, 82% to 14%.”

“Large majorities of Democrats also think the party should fight President Donald Trump harder — even if they don’t win.”

CNN: Government shutdown fears intensify as Democrats stiffen resolve to block GOP spending bill.

A new Siena poll in New York finds Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) with a 52% to 27% lead over Rep. Elise Stefanik (R) in the gubernatorial race, a big increase from the 45% to 31% advantage the poll gave the incumbent a month ago.

Trump Seeks to Merge Kirk’s Movement with MAGA

September 17, 2025 at 7:58 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Following Charlie Kirk’s assassination last week, White House officials are looking at ways to integrate President Trump’s political operation with Kirk’s Turning Point movement to build on the late activist’s success with conservative-leaning youth, Axios reports.

Said one Trump adviser: “Charlie would want us to carry on with his work. And we’re going to.”

Quote of the Day

September 17, 2025 at 7:54 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The biggest thing is to broaden the assassination investigation from a single murder to the broader conspiracy. If we are going to go to war, let’s go to war.”

— Stephen Bannon, quoted by Politico, on how the Trump administration should respond to Charlie Kirk’s murder.

Democratic Calendar in Disarray

September 17, 2025 at 7:47 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Larry Sabato’s Crystal Ball: “The future direction of the Democratic Party will be defined in no small part by the 2028 presidential primary season.”

“But the actual sequencing of that primary season remains up in the air, and it remains a logistical question for Democrats to solve as they continue to grapple with the larger challenges revealed by the 2024 election.”

“Among the thorny details Democrats need to work out is what to do with New Hampshire, which continues to zealously protect its ‘first-in-the-nation’ status.”

Trump Lashes Out at ‘Corrupt’ Probe into Charlie Kirk

September 17, 2025 at 7:33 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump accused the Biden administration of having “weaponized” the Justice Department against the late conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

Democratic Think Tank Wants to Curb Influence of Liberals

September 17, 2025 at 7:27 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“As Democrats search for their way out of the political wilderness, a new think tank, introduced on Wednesday, has some ideas about where the party went wrong,” the New York Times reports.

“Among them: too much emphasis on issues like climate change and LGBTQ rights, and far too much deference to the powerful liberal organizations championing those causes at the expense, some argue, of appealing to voters in battleground states.”

Said veteran Democratic operative Adam Jentleson: “The folks who are most to blame about Trump are the ones who pushed Democrats to take indefensible positions.”

The Economist: Who’s afraid of the Democratic Socialists?

Trump Still Has No U.N. Ambassador

September 17, 2025 at 7:19 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Donald Trump still does not have his ambassador to the United Nations in place eight months into his term,” NBC News reports.

“And given the Senate’s schedule, it is unlikely that Mike Waltz — who Trump first announced would be his nominee for the high-profile post more than four months ago — will be confirmed in time for the annual meeting of the U.N. General Assembly this month, arguably the most important gathering for the ambassador.”

Brad Raffensperger to Run for Georgia Governor

September 17, 2025 at 7:15 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, best known for rejecting Donald Trump’s pressure to overturn Georgia’s 2020 results, entered the governor’s race Wednesday in a bid that will test whether a Republican who crossed the president can still win over his party’s voters,” the Atlanta Journal Constitution reports.

AP: “The wealthy engineering entrepreneur might appeal most to business-oriented Republicans who once dominated GOP primaries in Georgia, but he is pledging a strongly conservative campaign even while he remains scorned by Trump and his allies.“

Moscow and Minsk Rehearse Launch of Nuclear Weapons

Obama Says the Nation Is in a ‘Political Crisis’

September 17, 2025 at 6:19 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Former President Barack Obama suggested on Tuesday that President Trump and his allies were using the assassination of the conservative activist Charlie Kirk to stoke division and silence debate about Mr. Kirk’s ideas,” the New York Times reports.

Said Obama: “When I hear not just our current president, but his aides, who have a history of calling political opponents ‘vermin,’ enemies who need to be ‘targeted,’ that speaks to a broader problem that we have right now, and something that we’re going to have to grapple with — all of us.”

“Drawing more of a contrast with Mr. Trump, he referred to his own presidency and to past Republican leaders he said had believed in unifying a fractious country.”

He added: “I think George W. Bush believed that. I believe that people who I ran against — I know John McCain believed it. I know Mitt Romney believed it. What I’m describing is not a Democratic value or Republican value. It is an American value. And I think at moments like this, when tensions are high, then part of the job of the president is to pull people together.”
