Democrats Are Looking for Fighters

July 6, 2026 at 6:09 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“With President Trump’s second term in full swing and the midterm election four months away, a new kind of Democratic candidate is ascendant: the outsider vowing to overhaul the system,” the New York Times reports.

“The rise of these candidates shows a mood shift, many in the party say, from the midterms in Mr. Trump’s first term. Eight years ago, Democrats won the House after elevating scores of candidates calling for good government and incremental health care improvements. This time, many Democratic voters are making clear their hunger for systemic change — charting a course in the first half of the primary season that could point toward a different type of general election in the fall.”

“The party, which has often appeared rudderless since Mr. Trump’s return, is testing in real time whether it can go further in key races by running populist progressives who energize the base, or by choosing more traditional, centrist candidates.”

Democratic Socialists Give New Life to Medicare for All

July 6, 2026 at 6:05 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Democratic socialist and progressives’ success in this year’s primaries is evidence of new enthusiasm for Medicare for All plans that many centrists have long dismissed as costly pipe dreams,” Axios reports.

“The health affordability crisis and widespread frustration with the medical system are fueling a new appetite for big-government solutions to address drug prices, insurance premiums and long-term care costs.”

Vance Positions to Be Trump’s Heir — For Now

July 6, 2026 at 6:04 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“This is JD Vance’s summer: The vice president penned a bestselling book, helped broker a tentative peace deal with Iran, embarked on a media blitz and — most importantly for him — impressed the man in the Oval Office,” Axios reports.

“Why it matters: Vance’s performances on TV, in polls and on the global chessboard underscore how — at least at this moment — the VP looks like President Trump’s undisputed political heir if he runs in 2028.”

Said one White House official: “JD is earning it, and Trump sees it.”

July 6, 2026 at 6:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Democratic Party’s progressive wing is claiming new momentum in Michigan,” Semafor reports.

“State Sen. Mallory McMorrow dropped her Senate bid on Sunday, narrowing the Democratic primary for an open seat to Abdul El-Sayed and Rep. Haley Stevens (D-MI).”

“Today, Rep. Analilia Mejia (D-NJ) is endorsing El-Sayed, hoping to add him to a string of Sen. Bernie Sanders-endorsed primary winners since her own race in February.”

Axios: McMorrow suspends Michigan Senate bid in shock move.

Research Universities Are Admitting Fewer Ph.D.s

July 6, 2026 at 5:58 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The number of students admitted to Ph.D. programs this fall dropped 15 percent from the previous year, according to data from over 50 top research universities, raising fears that the nation’s capacity to produce new science could be diminished,” the New York Times reports.

“The decline is driven, in part, by a chaotic and unpredictable federal funding environment under the Trump administration, as federal cuts are promised and then reversed, and budgets remain unclear.”

Trump Suggests Italy’s Giorgia Meloni Is a Stalker

July 5, 2026 at 7:18 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Donald Trump took a moment on Sunday to keep his feud with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni going by posting a picture of her gazing at him longingly. The president used the picture to suggest she was a stalker,” Mediaite reports.

Mike Johnson Plots ‘Fix’ to Birthright Citizenship

July 5, 2026 at 5:52 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) said he is working on a ‘legislative fix’ that would counter the Supreme Court’s recent ruling that upheld birthright citizenship — a ruling that rejected President Donald Trump’s argument against it and angered many Republicans,” Mediaite reports.

Said Johnson: “We do need to address the ruling… We’re looking at all angles. If there’s some legislative fix, we’ll advance that immediately; if it’s a constitutional amendment, as you know, it takes a little more time. But we’ve got to address this — it really is a serious, serious issue.”

Obama’s Influence Shadows Democrats’ Race to 2028

July 5, 2026 at 5:39 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Democratic Party is divided. But almost all Democratic voters still agree on one thing: They really like Barack Obama,” Axios reports.

“Why it matters: Obama remains the most powerful and popular Democrat in America, with the ability to play kingmaker in the presidential election — if he chooses to.”

Trump Gets Soccer Star’s Red Card Reversed

July 5, 2026 at 3:51 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump called Gianni Infantino, the president of FIFA, on Wednesday and asked him to review the suspension of the United States’ top goal scorer, Folarin Balogun, after he was given a red card in the team’s match that night against Bosnia and Herzegovina, according to three people familiar with the conversation,” the New York Times reports.

“On Sunday, FIFA announced that Mr. Balogun would be eligible to play Monday against Belgium after his red card ban was suspended.”

“The reversal is highly unusual and the first time since 1962 that FIFA has allowed a player to appear in a game when they would have been suspended.”

CNBC: Trump thanks FIFA after Folarin Balogun’s World Cup red card suspension is reversed.

NATO Chief Faces Challenge as Trump Demands ‘Loyalty’

July 5, 2026 at 2:38 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Since he started work as NATO secretary-general almost two years ago, Mark Rutte has spent much of his time trying to keep the United States anchored to the world’s biggest military alliance, employing outright flattery to dissuade U.S. President Donald Trump from acting on threats to abandon it,” Associated Press reports.

“But the goalposts keep shifting, raising the stakes ahead of this week’s summit in Turkey.”

“Initially, it was about money. Trump has long railed against NATO allies for spending too small a fraction of their national budgets on defense. But those problems were addressed at their summit last year, when U.S. allies committed to invest as much as America, in gross domestic product terms.”

“NATO’s real problem now is turning that money into military capabilities, particularly as European countries worry about a possible attack from Russia.”

July 5, 2026 at 2:07 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Ken Burns said the drafters of the U.S. Constitution “would be abjectly disappointed” by the state of the United States in 2026, especially since the legislative branch has effectively “abdicated so much of the power,” The Wrap reports.

‘The Atlantic’ Republishes JD Vance’s Anti-Trump Essay

July 5, 2026 at 2:03 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Atlantic republished a 10-year old JD Vance essay that dismissed Donald Trump as nothing more than “cultural heroin.”

Wrote Vance: “He never offers details for how these plans will work, because he can’t. Trump’s promises are the needle in America’s collective vein.”

“Trump is cultural heroin. He makes some feel better for a bit. But he cannot fix what ails them, and one day they’ll realize it.”

Mallory McMorrow Drops Her Senate Bid in Michigan

July 5, 2026 at 1:44 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Mallory McMorrow (D) ended her Michigan Senate campaign Sunday, creating a head-to-head race between progressive Abdul El-Sayed (D) and establishment-backed Rep. Haley Stevens (D-MI) in the primary, Detroit News reports.

McMorrow had been consistently polling third in the Democratic primary.

Detroit Free Press: “She said she had hoped that voters would support a candidate who combined El-Sayed’ progressivism and Steven’s policy background but that path has been largely closed off by considerable outside spending in the race.”

Quote of the Day

July 5, 2026 at 1:41 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“I don’t care. It’s America 250. If they can storm the beaches of D-Day on D-Day, I can deliver a speech and keep this program going.”

— President Trump, quoted by Rolling Stone, when told a storm may delay his July 4th speech.
