El Salvador Is Reaping Rewards From Trump’s Agenda

July 10, 2025 at 10:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“For the U.S. government, sending deportees accused of being gang members to a prison in El Salvador fits with President Trump’s promise to aggressively deport undocumented migrants and to crack down on crime,” the New York Times reports.

“For El Salvador’s president, Nayib Bukele, the rewards appear to have included, among other things, a White House visit and a travel-safety rating for his country that is higher than France’s.”

“While the exact terms of the agreement have not been made public, other leaders around the world may be watching, experts and immigration lawyers say, especially as the Trump administration searches for other countries willing to take expelled migrants of other nationalities.”

Texts Bolster Claim that Emil Bove Wanted to Defy Court

July 10, 2025 at 9:58 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A fired Justice Department attorney has provided Congress with a trove of emails and text messages to corroborate his claims that a controversial Trump judicial nominee — top DOJ official Emil Bove — crudely discussed defying court orders,” Politico reports.

“The newly-released messages reinforce claims by whistleblower Erez Reuveni that Bove played a key role in a decision by Trump administration immigration officials to turn scores of Venezuelan immigrants over to El Salvador’s government despite a U.S. judge’s order not to do so.”

Quote of the Day

July 10, 2025 at 9:27 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Once it all came together, I wasn’t happy with how we rushed it. I wasn’t happy with a lot of the tax credits, new tax credits — I don’t want to increase taxes, but if we’re $37 trillion in debt, do we need to cut taxes more? I’m not happy with all the things we threw in.”

— Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI), quoted by NOTUS, expressing disappointment with the Republican megabill he voted to pass.

July 10, 2025 at 9:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Prime Minister Keir Starmer of Britain and President Emmanuel Macron of France will announce on Thursday the details of a new defense relationship that will include a first-ever pledge to have their nuclear arsenals work together in the event of serious danger to allies in Europe,” the New York Times reports.

Trump’s Deportations Lag Behind Obama’s

July 10, 2025 at 8:38 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents last month arrested the most people in at least five years, but deportations are still lagging far behind what President Donald Trump has promised — and even behind those in the Obama administration,” NBC News reports.

“The discrepancy between arrests and deportations highlights the challenges the Trump administration faces to make good on Trump’s Inauguration Day vow to deport ‘millions and millions’ of immigrants.”

Taiwan Military Exercises Begin

July 10, 2025 at 8:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Taiwan has commenced its “largest-ever military drills intended to guard against Chinese threats to invade,” the Taipei Times reports.

The 10-day live-fire exercises “are the longest yet and follow the delivery of a range of new weaponry from tanks to uncrewed waterborne drones. The drills began with exercises to counter the actions of China Coast Guard and maritime militia ships.”

Younger Democrats Are Sick of Their Party’s Status Quo

July 10, 2025 at 8:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A number of prominent younger Democrats with records of winning tough races are forming a new group with big ambitions to remake their party’s image, recruit a new wave of candidates and challenge political orthodoxies they say are holding the party back,” the New York Times reports.

“Members of the initiative, Majority Democrats, have different theories about how the national party has blundered. Some believe a heavy reliance on abortion-rights messaging or anti-Trump sentiment has come at the expense of a stronger economic focus. Others say party leaders underestimate how much pandemic-era school closures or reflexive defenses of former President Joseph R. Biden Jr.’s re-election bid have eroded voters’ trust in Democrats.”

Law Firms’ Deals With Trump Look Worse and Worse

July 10, 2025 at 7:50 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “Trump’s executive orders and the deals struck by the settling firms have not aged well. The firms that threw in the towel appear to have misjudged the fallout — financial, reputational, political and legal.”

“Meanwhile, the Trump administration has gotten hammered by the judges presiding over the cases challenging the White House, and it’s far from clear the government’s appeal will get a better reception in the higher courts, including the Supreme Court, if it gets there.”

California Still Waiting for Disaster Relief

July 10, 2025 at 7:47 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“For months, California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) has pressed the GOP-led Congress to free up $40 billion in federal relief for swaths of Los Angeles consumed by devastating wildfires,” the Washington Post reports.

“President Donald Trump and other Republicans have so far withheld the funds, with many arguing that Newsom and other Democrats in the deep-blue state have mishandled the fires and should be forced to rescind liberal policies in exchange for aid.”

“But now deadly floods have struck ruby-red Texas — and the Republican response is much different, with Trump and others promising unfettered and prompt federal support in the months and years to come.”

Schumer Threatens Government Shutdown

July 10, 2025 at 7:38 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is warning Republicans they’ll risk a government shutdown all alone if they ram through cuts to PBS and foreign aid,” Axios reports.

“Now he just needs them to take that threat seriously.”

“A shutdown fight in this political climate could put Democratic senators under the most intense pressure of their careers. But the threat of a shutdown is Schumer’s (D-N.Y.) only real leverage.”

Iowa Democrats Plot 2028 Comeback for Caucuses

July 10, 2025 at 7:34 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Iowa Democrats are urging the national party to restore the state’s traditional place as the first contest of the presidential primary season — and some are pushing for Iowa’s caucuses to be first even if the Democratic National Committee disagrees,” Axios reports.

“Iowa returning to the lead-off spot could scramble the 2028 presidential contest, and significantly affect who becomes the Democratic nominee.”

Trump Faces MAGA Trust Crisis Over Jeffrey Epstein

July 10, 2025 at 7:32 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Top MAGA influencers warn the Trump administration is bleeding trust over its handling of the Jeffrey Epstein case, and that the president is drifting out of step with the movement he built,” Axios reports.

“The MAGA base was blindsided by the Justice Department’s conclusion that the notorious sex trafficker died by suicide in 2019 and had no ‘client list.’ Days after the initial shock, Trump’s insistence on moving on is fueling a deeper sense of betrayal.”

Funding Wars Begin

July 10, 2025 at 7:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Ahead of a Senate Appropriation Committee markup today, senators don’t have an agreement on spending for the next fiscal year and there’s “no sense that they’ll be able to reach one,” Punchbowl News reports.

Cory Booker Posts Personal Record Fundraising Haul

July 10, 2025 at 6:55 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) raked in millions of dollars in campaign funds during the second fundraising quarter, his biggest haul ever, after his marathon speech on the Senate floor,” NBC News reports.

“Booker’s Senate campaign and an affiliated joint fundraising committee raised $10 million from April through June, according to fundraising figures shared first with NBC News. It’s the most money Booker has ever raised in a single quarter, including when he was running for president in 2019.”

Lobbyists Revel in Trump Bonanza

July 10, 2025 at 6:53 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Wall Street Journal: “It is boom time in Washington for the influence industry, according to interviews with more than a dozen Republican lobbyists. The top 10 lobbying firms in Washington took in about $123 million in the first quarter of 2025, compared with about $80 million in the same time frame of both Joe Biden’s presidency and Trump’s first term.”

“Lobbyists with close ties to Trump are having a particularly lucrative year, covering their office walls with photos of the president and expanding their offices, with some firms even turning down clients because they already have too many.”

Texas to Take Up Redistricting in Special Session

July 10, 2025 at 6:45 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Texas Gov. Greg Abbott announced Wednesday the state Legislature will focus on redistricting during a special session later this year, as Republicans look to defend their narrow House majority in 2026,” Politico reports.

“The move could potentially reshape the state’s congressional map — which already heavily favors Republicans.”

“President Donald Trump’s allies have encouraged Texas Republicans to redraw the state’s maps to create more House districts that favor Republicans ahead of next year’s midterms.”

The Dallas Morning News says the effort comes just days after DOJ sent Abbott a letter “raising concerns over the legality of the racial makeup” of four Democratic seats.

California Would Respond to Texas Redistricting

July 10, 2025 at 6:45 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“People in California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s orbit have signaled their boss’s willingness to counter any redistricting in Texas with a similar move to redraw the maps in his own state, in an attempt to offset potential GOP gains,” the Texas Tribune reports.
