Why Resisting Trump Has Galvanized Black Democrats

June 29, 2026 at 5:18 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Black voters in South Carolina and other southern states are turning out in defiance of what many see as President Donald Trump’s efforts to suppress their political power, fueling Democratic hopes of clinching upset wins in the region in this fall’s midterm elections,” the Washington Post reports.

”A surge in Black voter engagement is energizing close Senate races in North Carolina and Georgia, where Democrats go into the summer with leads in many polls. Some Democrats see a chance of long-shot victories in South Carolina, such as ousting longtime incumbent Sen. Lindsey Graham (R) and flipping the congressional seat vacated by Rep. Nancy Mace (R).”

Decade of Frustration Fuels Democratic Uprising

June 29, 2026 at 5:17 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Democratic leaders are increasingly alarmed that they’re facing their own version of the GOP’s Tea Party rebellion 17 years ago — and that they can’t stop it,” Axios reports.

“The recent wave of primary victories by Democratic socialists and outsiders over the party’s hand-selected candidates has shocked establishment Democrats. But the rage in the party has been building for a decade.
It’s not just progressives vs. moderates. It’s insiders vs. outsiders, with many Democratic voters dissatisfied with their own party.”

New Student Loan Rules Take Effect July 1

June 29, 2026 at 5:15 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Borrowers face substantial changes to student loans beginning next month, including fewer repayment options under President Trump’s tax-and-spending law and the final death blow for the dismantled SAVE plan,” Axios reports.

“Why it matters: Millions of borrowers must pick a new repayment plan, and some will face tighter borrowing caps and higher repayments.”

Israel and Iran Reshape 2024 Party Politics

June 29, 2026 at 5:14 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Bitter foreign policy debates over Israel and Iran are fracturing the Democratic and Republican parties, creating powerful wedge issues that are reshaping the battle for control of Congress this year and could affect the 2028 presidential election,” the New York Times reports.

“The dispute among Democrats, in particular, has already left a lasting mark on the midterms. Israel’s growing unpopularity since the war in Gaza began nearly three years ago emerged as a dominant force last week, when two incumbent House Democrats in New York lost to primary challengers who had cast them as insufficiently critical of the U.S. ally.”

“And both U.S. support of Israel and the war with Iran continue to cause fissures inside the Republican Party, and particularly within President Trump’s Make America Great Again movement. Isolationists who hailed Mr. Trump’s campaign promise to avoid foreign wars say they feel betrayed by his intervention in Iran and the domestic consequence: spiking prices.”

The Supreme Court Is Sharply Divided

June 29, 2026 at 5:12 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A Supreme Court that has in recent days shown that it is sharply divided along ideological lines is poised to wrap up its work this week and to announce some of the biggest decisions of the term,” the New York Times reports.

“The justices pride themselves on reaching unanimous results, often publicizing their ability to find common ground in a surprisingly high number of cases. But in just the last week, seven of the nine decisions announced by the Supreme Court split the justices 6 to 3, with all Republican nominees in the majority and all Democratic nominees in dissent.”

“That familiar lineup is likely to hold in a number of the remaining eight rulings the court is set to issue on Monday and at least one other day this week, before the justices take their traditional summer break.”

PBS: Disagreements between Supreme Court justices bubble into public view as major rulings loom.

Red, White and GOP Hard-Liner Blues

June 29, 2026 at 5:10 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“House Republicans finally cleared a runway this week to finish some of their top legislative priorities before the July 4 recess,” Politico reports.

“That is, unless a small band of hard-liners trip up those plans at takeoff.”

“Speaker Mike Johnson is hoping to move quickly to pass fiscal 2027 appropriations legislation, the annual defense policy bill and a kids online safety bill that has been years in the making. The movement comes after President Donald Trump instructed GOP hard-liners to stop holding up a procedural vote amid a protest from Rep. Anna Paulina Luna and others that the Senate hadn’t passed Trump’s election security bill.”

“But Luna and other hard-liners are still threatening to tank the procedural vote that could delay the defense policy bill and other measures until they get concessions on the SAVE America Act, amid other demands.”

Putin Admits Russia Faces Fuel Shortages

June 29, 2026 at 5:10 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Russian President Vladimir Putin has conceded that the country is facing fuel shortages following a barrage of long-range Ukrainian drone strikes,” CNBC reports.

The Supreme Court Builds Its Own Massive Police Force

June 28, 2026 at 10:33 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “It’s often said that the Supreme Court has no army. Yet, with little fanfare, the size of the Supreme Court’s police force has begun mushrooming. For years, the force sat at fewer than 200 officers, but now officials are aiming to more than double the ranks of the agents and officers who protect the justices and the Supreme Court’s building.”

”The push for a rapid security buildout stems from the substantial threats to the justices at a moment of growing political violence in the U.S. and the sense that the system has just not been up to the task of keeping them safe. That’s a belief that appears to be shared by at least some of the justices themselves.”

Russia Awaits U.S. Envoys for Fresh Round of Ukraine Talks

June 28, 2026 at 9:05 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Kremlin expects US negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to travel to Moscow to continue talks on ending the war in Ukraine once Washington is no longer preoccupied with the conflict with Iran, Russian President Vladimir Putin said in an interview with state television,” Bloomberg reports.

U.S.-Iran Deal Unwinds Decades of Sanctions

June 28, 2026 at 8:36 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Trump administration’s effort to unwind decades of sanctions as part of a deal to end the war with Iran has created a head-spinning situation for governments, banks and other companies as they contemplate a shifting patchwork of new permissions and old restrictions,” Bloomberg reports.

“Following the revolution in 1979, Iran became one of the most sanctioned nations on Earth over its nuclear program and support for regional militias. But the White House is now orchestrating a stunning reversal as part of a broader deal to open the Strait of Hormuz, lower global energy prices and end its unpopular war.”

U.S. and Iran Agree to Stop Fight Over the Strait

June 28, 2026 at 8:01 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The U.S. and Iran have agreed to end days of back-and-forth fighting around the Strait of Hormuz and resume peace talks, said officials from the U.S. and other countries involved in the negotiations,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“The dangerous period of violence that began Thursday disrupted President Trump’s attempt to end hostilities with Iran and negotiate a settlement that addresses Tehran’s nuclear program. Traffic in the Strait of Hormuz fell during the tit-for-tat strikes, slowing the recovery of a waterway through which 20% of the world’s crude oil once flowed. A U.S. official said vessels would now move freely.”

Axios: U.S. and Iran agree to halt strikes and meet this week.

Conflicting Claims Over Status of Iran-U.S. Negotiations

June 28, 2026 at 8:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Iran says it skipped technical talks with the United States on Sunday after the two sides exchanged military strikes, but a U.S. official countered that negotiations to end the war are ongoing,” NOTUS reports.

Tension with Unions Shadow Moore’s Run-Up to 2028

June 28, 2026 at 6:22 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Maryland Gov. Wes Moore has cast himself as a champion of workers, but behind the scenes his relationships with some labor unions are increasingly rocky,” Axios reports.

“Several union officials tell Axios that the potential 2028 presidential candidate says the right things to them but often doesn’t follow through — and that he’s even combative toward organized labor at times.”

Trump Says DC Golf Course Work to Start in September

June 28, 2026 at 6:10 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump said the federal government will begin renovating East Potomac Golf Links in Washington, D.C., on Sept. 1,” Axios reports.

“The renovation of the public course is part of Trump’s broader effort to reshape the nation’s capital through highly visible federal projects and public-space overhauls.”

Bloomberg: Trump tours DC projects, says golf course to be renovated.

MAHA Feels Betrayed After Supreme Court Ruling

June 28, 2026 at 6:08 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Prominent activists with the ‘Make America Healthy Again’ movement are raging and saying they feel betrayed after the Supreme Court sided with pesticide maker Monsanto on Thursday and said it did not need to put a warning label about a potential cancer risk associated with its Roundup weedkiller,” NewsNation reports.

“The backlash could test the movement’s ties with the Republican Party, especially after the Trump administration backed Monsanto in the case.”

Iran Risks Peace Talks to Maintain Leverage Over Strait

June 28, 2026 at 4:29 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The four-day cycle of attacks that Iran set off with the United States over the Strait of Hormuz has risked derailing the newly reached cease-fire in a war both sides are eager to end,” the New York Times reports.

“Yet for Iran, analysts say, it was a necessary gambit.”

“Iran’s newfound power to disrupt traffic through a waterway that is pivotal to the global economy is critical leverage it cannot afford to lose — either at the negotiating table or back at war with the United States.”

Wall Street Journal: “Iran has the exclusive right to manage traffic in the Strait of Hormuz under the preliminary peace deal signed with President Trump, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Sunday, adding that attempts to circumvent its authority risk triggering more strikes like those seen in recent days.”

Washington Post: Iran insists it has sole control of Hormuz, ignoring Trump’s threats.

Trump Is Not Thrilled About JD Vance Presidency

June 28, 2026 at 4:25 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The 2028 presidential election is JD Vance’s to lose, Maggie Haberman said on ‘Meet the Press’ Sunday – something Donald Trump isn’t happy about,” The Wrap reports.

Said Haberman: “I will say, there is nothing in our reporting that suggests that Rubio is doing the things one would be doing to run. And it is still Vance’s to lose, which also doesn’t necessarily thrill Trump, who doesn’t like the idea of somebody coming next.”

GOP Signals Reconciliation Path for Iran Military Spending

June 28, 2026 at 4:23 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Rep. Mark Harris (R-NC) said on Sunday that Congress will likely need to provide the Pentagon with additional funding for the Iran war via a budget reconciliation package,” NewsNation reports.

Said Harris: “To be honest with you, it’s probably going to take something along reconciliation to be able to do it because the Democrats don’t offer us any votes to go along.”

Los Angeles Times: Costs of Iran war will linger despite conflict’s end.
