What Trump’s Attacks on the Fed Chair Are About

July 11, 2025 at 10:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

CNN: “White House advisers are now unequivocally engaged in a coordinated effort to dramatically ramp up the pressure on Powell in public statements and through bureaucratic moves designed to give Trump more leverage.”

“That leverage, sources say, isn’t designed to trigger Powell’s removal – at least not at the moment.”

“But with Trump’s frustration over the Fed’s refusal to bow to his pressure to lower rates growing by the day, it is the most consequential step taken thus far to bring that threat to Powell’s doorstep.”

“It also serves as the clearest window into the expanding effort to change Powell and the Federal Open Market Committee’s insistence on independence.”

Harvard Explores New Center for Conservative Scholarship

July 11, 2025 at 9:56 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Harvard leaders have discussed creating a program that people briefed on the talks described as a center for conservative scholarship, possibly modeled on Stanford’s Hoover Institution, as the school fights the Trump administration’s accusations that it is too liberal,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“The idea has circulated at the university for several years but gained steam after pro-Palestinian protests began disrupting campus in late 2023. Harvard has discussed the effort with potential donors, people familiar with the matter said. The cost of creating such a center could run somewhere between $500 million and $1 billion, a person familiar with Harvard’s thinking estimated.”

Case Closed on Jeffrey Epstein?

July 11, 2025 at 9:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Philip Rotner: “The DOJ’s deliberately opaque phrasing about what was not in the Epstein files tells us absolutely nothing about what was. The three words that do all the work here—’incriminating,’ ‘client,’ and ‘list’—only raise more questions.”

“What, exactly is an ‘incriminating ‘client list’? Why are the words ‘client list” in quotation marks? What does the absence of an ‘incriminating ‘client list’’ tell us about what is revealed in the Epstein files? Does it mean that Epstein’s clients, enablers, and party bros are indeed identified in the files, but not in the format of a ‘list’? Does it mean that there’s a list, but it doesn’t expressly identify those on it as ‘clients’? Does it mean that there’s a list of clients, but the Trump DOJ doesn’t interpret it as ‘incriminating’? If Epstein hooked up some of his party bros with underage (or drugged or coerced) girls but didn’t get paid money for doing so, are the bros—whose conduct may have crossed the line into criminality—’clients’? If their names are in a black book, a flight log, or a guest registry, is that a ‘list’? Is it a ‘client list’? Is it an ‘incriminating client list’?”

Flashback Quote of the Day

July 11, 2025 at 9:16 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Oh my God. This is terrible. This is the end of my Presidency. I’m fucked.”

— President Trump, quoted by Politico, responding to news of special counsel Robert Mueller’s appointment by then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions in 2017.

The Conflict Is the Point

July 11, 2025 at 8:50 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Playbook: “In an era with low trust in institutions, widespread frustration with politics and deep cynicism about Washington, how do you continue to win when you’re the party already in power? By continuing to brand yourself as the outsiders — and picking fights that try to underscore that.”

“More than most politicians, Trump innately grasps a reality that drives our modern moment: Attention means power, and conflict generally means attention. Trump’s ongoing MAGA revolution in Washington has concrete policy goals, but it has an overarching political one, too: driving a message that frames their actions time and again as those of outsiders going to war against the status quo.”

“That’s the throughline that connects a seemingly disparate array of stories right now.”

Quote of the Day

“I believe marriage is a sacred covenant and I have earnestly pursued reconciliation. But in light of recent discoveries, I do not believe that it honors God or is loving to myself, my children, or Ken to remain in the marriage.”

— Texas state Sen. Angela Paxton (R), on X, announcing her divorce from Attorney General Ken Paxton (R).

How the GOP’s Texas Redistricting Could Backfire

July 11, 2025 at 6:25 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Abby Livingston: “The 2021 map was drawn for incumbent protection in a wave year, which could also be the case next year if historical trends hold up. To pick up new seats, Republican voters will need to be pulled from safe Republican seats to redden currently Democratic districts.”

The math: “If Republicans go after three seats this way, the changes can probably be made with little fanfare and concentrate mostly on South Texas, which is trending toward the G.O.P. anyway. But if they go big — aiming for, say, five seats — the lines could make reelection much more difficult for Republican incumbents in Houston and Dallas.

Texas Tribune: As Texas Republicans prepare for mid-decade redistricting, cautionary tales loom from the past.

What the Next Phase of Trump’s Presidency Looks Like

July 11, 2025 at 6:21 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Atlantic: “Not quite six months into his new term, President Donald Trump has fulfilled many of his campaign promises. He has cut taxes, launched trade wars, frustrated longtime international allies, cracked down on border crossings, and slashed the federal government. He steamrolled the opposition, including members of his own party, to push through Congress a far-reaching and expensive piece of legislation that contains nearly his entire domestic agenda.”

“Now the next phase of his presidency—as well as next year’s midterms—could be defined by his bet that the Republican bill, and other Trump policies, will usher in a booming economy. If that wager pays off, it would reinforce one of Trump’s strongest issues—but Democrats see an opening to hit the president for disproportionately helping the wealthy at the expense of the poor. The White House won’t push for another big legislative package between now and next November.”

“Instead, Trump will turn to selling and defending what his party just passed, in addition to focusing on what he believes are his core political strengths: high-stakes trade deals and high-profile immigration clashes. Oh, and he wouldn’t mind winning a Nobel Peace Prize too.”

Trump Tests Carney’s Strategy of Avoiding Conflict

July 11, 2025 at 5:25 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“It seems that nothing Canada has tried so far has shielded it from the threats of Donald Trump,” Bloomberg reports.

“Barely a week after Trump and Prime Minister Mark Carney restarted trade talks, with Canada targeting an agreement by July 21, Trump published a new broadside on one of the US’s largest trading partners, threatening a 35% tariff.”

New York Times: Trump threatens higher tariffs on Canada in the middle of trade talks.

Vietnam Surprised by Trump Tariff Announcement

July 11, 2025 at 5:23 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Vietnam’s leadership was caught off guard by US President Donald Trump’s announcement last week that it agreed to a 20% tariff, and the Southeast Asian nation is still seeking to lower the rate,“ Bloomberg reports.

“Straight after last Wednesday’s call with Trump, Vietnam’s party chief To Lam told his negotiating team to keep working to bring the tariff rate down… The 20% figure came as a surprise as Vietnam believed it had secured a more favorable tariff range.”

How Netanyahu Prolonged the War to Stay in Power

July 11, 2025 at 5:21 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “But for Netanyahu, a truce also came with personal risk. As prime minister, he led a fragile coalition that depended on the support of far-right ministers who wanted to occupy Gaza, not withdraw from it. They sought a long war that would ultimately enable Israel to re-establish Jewish settlements in Gaza. If a cease-fire came too soon, these ministers might decide to collapse the ruling coalition. That would prompt early elections that polls showed Netanyahu would lose.”

“Out of office, Netanyahu was vulnerable. Since 2020, he had been standing trial for corruption; the charges, which he denied, mostly related to granting favors to businessmen in exchange for gifts and favorable media coverage. Shorn of power, Netanyahu would lose the ability to force out the attorney general who oversaw his prosecution — as indeed his government would later attempt to do.”

Trump Backs Away from Abolishing FEMA

July 11, 2025 at 5:17 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“For months, President Donald Trump and his homeland security secretary have said the Federal Emergency Management Agency could be eliminated,” the Washington Post reports.

“But as the president heads to Texas to view the impact of last week’s deadly floods, administration officials say abolishing the agency outright is not on the agenda.”

Trump Doubles Down on Using Tariffs as Tool of Power

July 10, 2025 at 10:53 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump’s threat for a 50% tariff on Brazilian imports expanded his use of punitive duties over matters that have nothing to do with trade, breaking with more than a half-century of global economic precedent,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Trump cited the trial of the president’s close political ally, former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, as the rationale for new tariffs set to take effect Aug. 1 on imports from the largest economy in Latin America.”

“It is one of the latest—and perhaps most brazen—examples of Trump using tariffs as a cudgel for political priorities outside of trade.”

Trump Plans ‘Major’ Russia Statement Monday

July 10, 2025 at 10:51 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump said he plans to make a “major statement” on Russia, as the U.S. prepares to send more American weapons to Ukraine via purchases from NATO allies, Bloomberg reports.

Bannon Calls for Special Prosecutor for Epstein Files

July 10, 2025 at 10:40 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Steve Bannon has called for a special prosecutor to investigate the Epstein files as MAGA world’s noisiest voices cause trouble for Donald Trump with political wrangling over the issue,” The Telegraph reports.

Said Rob Finnerty on Newsmax: “It’s almost like the Justice Department doesn’t want us talking about Jeffrey Epstein anymore.”

Trump Plans 15% to 20% Blanket Tariffs on Most Countries

July 10, 2025 at 8:44 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Donald Trump said Thursday he plans to impose blanket tariffs of 15% or 20% on most trade partners, dismissing concerns that further tariffs could negatively affect the stock market or drive inflation,” NBC News reports.

Said Trump: “We’re just going to say all of the remaining countries are going to pay, whether it’s 20% or 15%. We’ll work that out now.”

“Blanket tariffs are currently set at 10%.”

However, Bloomberg reports Trump will levy a 35% tariff on goods coming into the US from Canada.
