Justices Give Trump New Tools to Accelerate Deportations

July 1, 2026 at 5:51 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Despite President Trump’s defeat at the Supreme Court in his bid to limit birthright citizenship, he has notched several recent court victories that are expected to turbocharge his deportation efforts,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Perhaps most vulnerable are hundreds of thousands of Haitians in the U.S. under what is known as Temporary Protected Status, after a 6-3 decision from the high court that judges have little power to review the executive branch’s decisions about the program.”

“Trump has railed against Haitians, and administration officials are in discussions about how to target these immigrants who are now eligible for deportation.”

“The goal is to do so without causing a public backlash… Rather than sending a flood of immigration agents to cities with large Haitian populations, such as Springfield, Ohio, they plan to rely on data and targeting tools.”

What Tom Kean Didn’t Explain About His Absence

July 1, 2026 at 5:42 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “His five-minute speech on the House floor appeared heartfelt and addressed some of the questions surrounding his mysterious absence, yet left others unanswered.”

“He did not elaborate on why he had entered the hospital or where he had been treated. He did not discuss medication or long-term treatment needs. He did not explain why it had taken so long for doctors to clear him to return to work.”

The Birthright Decision Was Surprisingly Close

July 1, 2026 at 5:39 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“On the final day of its term, the Supreme Court issued a majority opinion with a clear message: Birthright citizenship is a right guaranteed by the 14th Amendment of the Constitution,” the New York Times reports.

“That decision on Tuesday, striking down President Trump’s executive order limiting birthright citizenship, reaffirmed decades of legal thought and practice. But some civil rights advocates, lawyers and legal scholars were surprised that four justices — Clarence Thomas, Brett M. Kavanaugh, Samuel A. Alito Jr. and Neil M. Gorsuch — said that they did not see birthright citizenship as a constitutional right for certain groups.”

“In the end, birthright citizenship as a constitutional right survived by one vote — the latest sign of how far the conservative legal movement has shifted on the issue.”

Progressive Wave Faces Redistricting Challenge

July 1, 2026 at 5:35 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “It’s no secret Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries is spearheading a mid-decade redistricting drive to win control of the House. But the results of last week’s primaries in New York City add a new wrinkle to that project: How will he handle foes from within his own party?l

”On June 23, a trio of far-left congressional candidates routed establishment Democrats aligned with the Brooklyn lawmaker. Come 2028, when New York officials hope to redraw those three seats along with the rest of the state’s congressional boundaries, Jeffries would be one of the people influencing the process.”

Opening Hormuz Drives a Wedge into U.S.-Saudi Relations

July 1, 2026 at 5:33 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“More than 100 U.S. military aircraft were taking off from bases and warships across the Middle East as part of an effort to crack open the Strait of Hormuz this past spring when they hit a glitch: Saudi Arabia, whose bases and airspace were critical to the mission, was saying no,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“The pushback forced the U.S. to abort Project Freedom, according to U.S. officials familiar with the matter, ending the military operation to guarantee safe passage for ships that President Trump had launched hours earlier.”

Trump’s Historical Yarns Often Disregard the Truth

July 1, 2026 at 5:08 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“By President Trump’s account, his desire to annex Greenland merely restores prewar borders, his trade policy returns Gilded Age fiscal policy and prosperity and his efforts to build a towering arch in Washington completes a 150-year-old architectural dream,” the New York Times reports.

“President Andrew Jackson’s spoils system was an anti-corruption purge, not unlike Mr. Trump’s own. President William McKinley’s protectionist stance was also downright Trumpian. Oh, and the Unabomber, too, evidently has a link to the 47th president, by his telling: His uncle once taught the notorious terrorist.”

“Since retaking office, Mr. Trump has spun many historical yarns that stretch the truth, strain credulity or are downright false. American history has become a mirror for his preferred policies and a mine for his favored narratives. The details are not as important as overarching themes, and facts take a back seat to entertainment.”

Task Force Aims to Boost Trump’s Election Claims

June 30, 2026 at 10:36 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A White House task force is gathering thousands of pages of documents from U.S. intelligence agencies, with plans to declassify some of them, so President Donald Trump can amplify new accusations about past elections,” NBC News reports.

“The group has been charged with gathering information from federal intelligence and law enforcement agencies related to the 2020 presidential election, including signs of ballot irregularities, potential voting machine issues and possibly beyond.”

Supreme Court Pushes Right While Reining In Trump

June 30, 2026 at 10:29 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump may have built the Supreme Court’s supermajority, but it was the Reagan Revolution that prevailed during the just-completed term,” Bloomberg reports.

“The court’s six Republican appointees spent the session bolstering executive power, enhancing gun rights, eliminating campaign spending restrictions, and blunting the Voting Rights Act as a force for Black and Hispanic representation in Congress. In several cases, the high court overturned decades-old precedent or undercut laws passed by the legislature.”

“But the justices took a more restrained tack when it came to some of the president’s most audacious gambits: his bid to use an emergency-powers law to impose sweeping global tariffs, his attempt to fire Fed Governor Lisa Cook without giving her a chance to contest mortgage fraud allegations and his executive order aiming to eliminate automatic birthright citizenship.”

Financial Times: Supreme Court checks Trump’s power even as it bolsters the presidency.

Michael Bennet Loses His Bid for Governor

June 30, 2026 at 10:09 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Attorney General Phil Weiser was projected on Tuesday to win the Democratic nomination in Colorado’s gubernatorial primary over Sen. Michael Bennet,” NOTUS reports.

“It’s a stunning loss for Bennet, who was long considered the front-runner in the race. In the primary, which became about how Democrats will stand up to Trump, he batted back attacks over his confirmation votes for some Trump administration officials.”

Progressive Wins Colorado Primary for Competitive Seat

June 30, 2026 at 9:59 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Manny Rutinel, a progressive state representative, defeated a moderate Democrat to win the primary election in Colorado’s most competitive swing district,” the New York Times reports.

“Now he will face Representative Gabe Evans, a Republican seen as vulnerable, in a race that will help determine which party controls the House.”

Fox News: Mamdani comparisons follow Colorado Democrat into pivotal House race after primary win.

E. Jean Carroll Asks Judge to Release Trump’s $5 Million

June 30, 2026 at 9:27 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Magazine columnist E. Jean Carroll asked a judge to release more than $5 million to her one day after the Supreme Court rejected President Donald Trump’s effort to challenge a jury’s finding that he sexually abused and defamed her,” CNN reports.

“Carroll’s lawyers asked the trial judge to expedite the briefing schedule on her motion to release the funds, saying both sides previously agreed to do it after the nation’s highest court ruled.”

Trump’s Moneymaking Run Is Unrivaled

June 30, 2026 at 9:25 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Lyndon B. Johnson’s wife owned a profitable radio station. George W. Bush was on the board of an oil company while his father was in the White House. And Hunter Biden was paid by a Ukrainian natural gas company while his father was vice president,” the New York Times reports.

“But never before in American history has there been anything like Donald J. Trump, a president who in his first year back in office has collected about $1.4 billion in new revenues from cryptocurrency businesses that directly benefited from his actions as president, a financial disclosure report made public on Tuesday shows.”

“Overall, Mr. Trump’s revenue in 2025 jumped to at least $2.2 billion, compared with a minimum of $622 million in 2024 before he returned to office.”

“The U.S. Department of Commerce told Anthropic it had lifted the ban on Tuesday evening allowing the AI company to re-release its latest model, Fable 5, to the general public.”

GOP Gets New Midterm Spending Weapon

June 30, 2026 at 7:08 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Senate GOP campaign arm won a major Supreme Court boost in the party’s bid to hold congressional majorities on Tuesday,” Axios reports.

“Republicans’ reliance on mega-donors and their cash-flush committees positions them to benefit more than Democrats from the ruling, which allows committees to spend unlimited sums in coordination with candidates as they push against headwinds in November.”

“GOP officials reacted with glee to the Tuesday ruling, deriding Democrats who have criticized the decision for giving more power to the wealthiest donors.”

Bloomberg: Supreme Court opens midterm ad floodgates, giving GOP an edge.
