Trump Pardoned Tax Cheat After Mother Gave $1 Million

May 27, 2025 at 11:07 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Mr. Walczak’s pardon application argued that his criminal prosecution was motivated more by his mother’s efforts for Mr. Trump than by his admitted use of money earmarked for employees’ taxes to fund an extravagant lifestyle.”

“Still, weeks went by and no pardon was forthcoming, even as Mr. Trump issued clemency grants to hundreds of other allies.”

“Then, Ms. Fago was invited to a $1-million-per-person fund-raising dinner last month that promised face-to-face access to Mr. Trump at his private Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, Fla.”

“Less than three weeks after she attended the dinner, Mr. Trump signed a full and unconditional pardon.”

Republicans Won’t Install Plaque for January 6 Officers

May 27, 2025 at 11:03 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“More than three years after its installation was approved by Congress, a plaque honoring law enforcement personnel for defending the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, is instead sitting in a Capitol basement utility room surrounded by tools and maintenance equipment,” the Washington Post reports.

“The cast bronze memorial to the officers, which declares that ‘their heroism will never be forgotten,’ was required by law to be installed by March 2023 near the west front of the building.”

How to Hide a 350-Foot Megayacht

May 27, 2025 at 11:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Russian oligarchs use the offshore system to shield their luxury assets. The Trump Administration is ending an effort to find and seize them.”

Pentagon Spokesperson Made Antisemitic Comments

May 27, 2025 at 11:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Pentagon has promoted Kingsley Wilson to press secretary despite her history of antisemitic comments, Jewish Insider reports.

Wilson has also called Confederate General Robert E. Lee “one of the greatest Americans to ever live.”

Why Do Justices Keep Giving Trump More Power?

May 27, 2025 at 10:57 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Kate Shaw: “The court may believe that it retains the ultimate authority to check presidential lawlessness, even as it signs off on the elimination of many other constraints on presidential power. The danger is that by the time the court tries to exercise that authority, it may be too late.”

CDC Stops Recommending Covid Vaccines for Some

May 27, 2025 at 10:53 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has stopped recommending routine Covid-19 vaccinations for pregnant women and healthy children,” Reuters reports.

“Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said in a video posted on social media platform X that the vaccines have been removed from the CDC’s immunization schedule for those groups.”

Sweeping Cuts at Veterans Affairs Tanks Morale

May 27, 2025 at 10:50 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Morale is plummeting inside the Department of Veterans Affairs as tens of thousands of employees prepare for deep staffing cuts, raising alarms among employees, veterans and advocates who fear the reductions would severely damage care and benefits for millions of the nation’s former service members,” the Washington Post reports.

Hegseth Probe Relied on Illegal Wiretaps

May 27, 2025 at 10:32 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The White House has lost confidence in a Pentagon leak investigation that Pete Hegseth used to justify firing three top aides last month, after advisers were told that the aides had supposedly been outed by an illegal warrantless National Security Agency wiretap,” The Guardian reports.

“The extraordinary explanation alarmed the advisers, who also raised it with people close to JD Vance, because such a wiretap would almost certainly be unconstitutional and an even bigger scandal than a number of leaks.”

“But the advisers found the claim to be untrue and complained that they were being fed dubious information by Hegseth’s personal lawyer, Tim Parlatore, who had been tasked with overseeing the investigation.”

Obama World Loses Its Shine for Democrats

May 27, 2025 at 9:45 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

NBC News: “More Democrats are openly criticizing Obama strategists and consultants, who were long treated as the high priests of their party’s politics. Democratic National Committee officials at a news event last month blamed Obama’s lack of investment in state parties over his two terms for setting back local organizing, with the party still feeling the effects. The so-called Obama coalition of voters — less politically engaged voters, younger voters and voters of color — is no more. In 2024, each of those groups shifted toward Trump in high numbers.”

“Going forward, it could mark a clean slate for a party whose course for nearly two decades cascaded from decisions Obama had made. It was Obama who chose Biden as his vice president, offering him the elevated perch that set up his 2020 election and his aborted 2024 re-election. Obama selected Hillary Clinton as his secretary of state, then anointed her for the Democratic nomination in the 2016 race against Trump. The operatives Obama and his top aides empowered have carved out leading, decision-making roles at the top of the Democratic Party since then.”

Europe Is Stronger Than It Thinks

May 27, 2025 at 9:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Paul Krugman: “On Friday Donald Trump, claiming that he was unhappy with European negotiating tactics, announced his intention to impose 50 percent tariffs on goods imported from the European Union. A rate that high would virtually shut down trans-Atlantic trade. But on Sunday, after talking with Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, he announced that the tariffs would be postponed until July 9.”

“I have no idea what von der Leyen said, and I’d also note that a huge threatened tariff that may or may not happen in 6 weeks does a lot to increase destructive uncertainty. But let me offer some advice, to the Commission and the EU as a whole: Don’t try to appease Trump. You can’t make any substantive concessions, because your policies toward U.S. exports are already quite favorable. And even giving Trump some kind of symbolic, meaningless win will only embolden him, confirming his false belief that ‘they’ve treated us very badly over the years.’”

“Above all, Europe needs to overcome its learned helplessness and act like the great power it is — especially given America’s apparent determination to destroy the pillars of its own strength.”

Pete Hegseth’s Divided Inner Circle Endures

May 27, 2025 at 9:15 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“An enduring rift among Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s cadre of senior advisers has divided the Pentagon’s front office and fueled internal speculation about his long-term viability in the Cabinet post after several episodes that attracted White House scrutiny,” the Washington Post reports.

“The conflict within Hegseth’s inner circle persists even after he purged several political appointees in April and attempts to portray a sense of unity among his remaining brain trust. His claims, however, are belied by continued behind-the-scenes dysfunction, brought on by unresolved personality conflicts, inexperience, vacancies in key leadership roles and a steady-state paranoia over what political crisis could emerge next.”

Quote of the Day

May 27, 2025 at 8:51 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“At that point I was seated very nicely. I was beginning to get into a groove of interacting with this man, and I suddenly hear him say, ‘dim the lights.” Some people have said this was an ambush. I was bemused. I was there thinking what is happening?”

— South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, quoted by Bloomberg, laughing off President Trump’s Oval Office ambush.

Tesla Sales Plunge in Europe

May 27, 2025 at 8:42 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“European sales of Tesla vehicles plunged in April, as the U.S. electric car maker continues to face reputational damage regionally and rising competition,” CNBC reports.

“Tesla sold 7,261 cars in Europe in April, down 49% year on year… That drop came even as overall battery electric car sales rose 34.1% annually in April.”

Tourists from Countries Hit Hard by Tariffs Stay Away

May 27, 2025 at 8:41 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Holidaymakers in countries hit the hardest by Donald Trump’s trade tariffs are taking the US off their list for trips abroad, according to online travel booking data,” The Guardian reports.

NPR Sues the Trump White House

May 27, 2025 at 8:35 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“NPR said on Tuesday that it was suing President Trump over his executive order that aimed to end federal funding for NPR and PBS,” the New York Times reports.

“The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Washington by NPR and other public radio organizations, including Colorado Public Radio and Aspen Public Radio, said Mr. Trump’s order violated the Constitution and the First Amendment’s protections for freedom of speech.”

NPR: “The lawsuit says the administration is usurping Congress’ right to direct how federal money will be spent and to pass laws. It names President Trump, White House budget director Russel Vought, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Maria Rosario Jackson, the chair of the National Endowment for the Arts, as defendants.”

Trump’s Weird Weekend

May 27, 2025 at 8:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump’s actions over Memorial Day weekend served as a stark reminder of just how far he deviates from traditional presidential norms, Politico reports.

“But if we’re going to (rightly) hammer much of the media for failing to cover Biden’s decline when it was hiding in plain sight, it’s probably also incumbent on us to keep on pointing out that weekends like this are, in a different way, also unimaginably far from traditional presidential behavior. Equally, Trump has (very publicly) acted like this for years — and won reelection without softening his edges. And for plenty of his supporters, this bewildering, careening, no-holds-barred approach to the presidency is entirely the point. It’s certainly a spectacle.”

Trump Mounts Big Push to Keep Control of the House

May 27, 2025 at 7:55 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump’s team has launched an early and aggressive behind-the-scenes effort to maintain the GOP’s tenuous grip on the House in 2026 — and avoid his third impeachment,” Axios reports.

“Trump allies believe — with good reason — that a Democrat-controlled House would launch investigations of the president and move to impeach him. That’s exactly what happened after Democrats seized the chamber during Trump’s first term.”

“Midterm elections are historically tough for the party occupying the White House, and senior Republicans privately acknowledge that retaining the speaker’s gavel won’t be easy.”

Senate Democrats Buzz About Possible Retirements

May 27, 2025 at 7:52 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Four Senate Democrats opted against reelection bids next year. Could there be more? There’s some buzz in the Democratic Caucus about two progressive senators’ futures — and they offered two different answers when asked about their future plans,” Semafor reports.

“Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-OR), who won his seat in 2008, told Semafor that he’s still weighing whether to run and expects to make an announcement in the second quarter, which means within the next month.”

“Then there’s Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA), 78, who said last year that he’s running and defended his decision. He dismissed chatter that he might be reconsidering.”
