House Democrats Fear Another Big Left-Wing Upset

June 29, 2026 at 7:51 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“House Democrats are watching with trepidation as another one of their veteran colleagues tries to fend off a left-wing challenger in the Colorado primaries on Tuesday,” Axios reports.

“The race will help reveal whether the big anti-establishment victories in New York last week were one-offs or a sign of the new normal for longtime Democratic incumbents.”

“Rep. Diana DeGette (D-CO) has told colleagues that she thinks she will ultimately prevail over attorney and PhD student Melat Kiros but is taking the challenge seriously.”

New York Times: What to watch in Colorado primary elections: will left-wing energy keep rising.

June 29, 2026 at 7:47 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“For more than 40 years, since his service as a young Reagan administration lawyer, Chief Justice John Roberts has pressed for an exceptionally powerful US president, one who could fire the heads of independent agencies at any time,” CNN reports.

“In one memo to the White House counsel in 1983, Roberts asserted, ‘the time is ripe to reconsider the constitutional anomaly of independent agencies.'”

“When he was appointed chief justice in 2005, he began laying the groundwork to reverse Supreme Court precedent that permitted Congress to limit the president’s firing power.”

Two Dan Sullivans Will Appear on Alaska Senate Ballot

June 29, 2026 at 7:45 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “The Alaska Supreme Court ruled on Monday that Dan J. Sullivan could appear on the ballot this year, seemingly bringing to a close a bizarre political saga hanging over the race for Senate in Alaska, a potentially consequential battleground as Democrats fight to regain control of Congress.”

“The court’s decision appeared to be good news for Democrats.”

“Republicans fear that their party’s incumbent, Senator Dan S. Sullivan, could be imperiled by the presence of Dan J. Sullivan on the ballot, arguing that voters could be confused and cast their ballot for the wrong Sullivan. They accused Democrats and former Representative Mary Peltola, who is vying to oust the incumbent senator, of being behind Dan. J Sullivan’s campaign and orchestrating an underhanded scheme to trick voters.”

Pentagon and Elections Bills Could Be Combined

June 29, 2026 at 7:42 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Speaker Mike Johnson said Monday he plans to deploy an unusual procedural maneuver in a bid to unfreeze the House floor this week, seeking to send the annual Pentagon policy bill and the GOP elections bill known as the SAVE America Act to the Senate in a single package,” Politico reports.

“That is likely a recipe for a continued standoff between the two chambers over the SAVE America Act, which has stalled in the Senate for months due to internal GOP divides. Under Johnson’s plan, the annual defense policy bill, which typically passes every year with large bipartisan majorities, could become a collateral victim of the impasse.”

Trump Loses on Mail Ballots, but Bigger Case Looms

June 29, 2026 at 6:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Supreme Court’s ruling letting more than a dozen states keep their post-election grace periods for mail ballots is a defeat for President Donald Trump and Republicans ahead of the midterms, but the GOP can still capture significant victories in major election-related cases coming further down the pipeline,” CNN reports.

“In an under-the-radar maneuver, the Supreme Court took up a separate case that could help Trump and Republicans tighten voter rules in the name of preventing noncitizen voting. Next term, the justices will consider reviving parts of an Arizona law requiring proof of citizenship for voting.”

June 29, 2026 at 5:41 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Norm Coleman, a Republican, will serve as vice chair. Other appointees include tech billionaire Marc Andreessen, right-wing author Michael Anton, former Republican Rep. “Under the plan, former Trump campaign spokesman Jason Miller would join the White House staff temporarily to help manage its communications strategy, alongside Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt and Communications Director Steven Cheung.”

June 29, 2026 at 5:10 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Half of the states are suing the Trump administration over its directives for implementing Medicaid work requirements, arguing that exemptions for sick people are too narrow and violate administrative law,” Axios reports.

“Democrats contend the administration’s rules will jeopardize care for some of the frailest Americans and cause more upheaval in states that already are rushing to implement the requirements by Jan. 1.”

Nate Silver Makes His Prediction

June 29, 2026 at 4:35 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Nate Silver said the predictions markets are underestimating the Democrats in the 2026 midterms, especially when it comes to winning back control of the House of Representatives,” Mediaite reports.

“Silver said prediction markets have Democrats at 80-85% odds to win back the House, and 40-45% to take control of the Senate. He said those are ‘pretty reasonable,’ but that it was ‘a little bit low’ on what he projects for the House. Silver said he gives the Dems an 85-90% shot at retaking the House.”

Said Trump: “Big deal. It’s a yawn.”

June 29, 2026 at 4:31 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“North Carolina county officials drawing up their early voting plans for this fall’s midterm elections are contending with a new power player this year: the state auditor,” NBC News reports.

“In the lame-duck period after the 2024 election, Republican legislators voted to strip incoming Democratic Gov. Josh Stein of his authority over the State Board of Elections and give it to the incoming state auditor, Dave Boliek, who had flipped the office for Republicans that year.”

“Once an under-the-radar statewide position focused on monitoring state finances, the state auditor’s office is now taking an involved role in county-level election planning. Boliek and his staff are soliciting information and weighing in on counties’ early voting plans for the November general election, offering feedback and suggesting changes.”
