Trump vs. Murdoch

July 18, 2025 at 9:09 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Brian Stelter: “At a time when other media outlets are hesitating and capitulating, Rupert Murdoch and the Wall Street Journal just stood up to President Trump and scooped one of the biggest political stories of the summer…”

“And yet… Murdoch’s Fox News has not mentioned the story once. So let me take a stab at answering all the questions I’m getting about the media mogul and his role.”

“Murdoch, age 94, wants to have it both ways. He wants to be a newsman (that’s how he sees himself) but also needs to be a businessman. He wants a muscular Journal breaking big stories but he also needs Fox News to keep printing money for his family and other shareholders.”

“It’s been readily apparent for years that Fox succeeds when it is The Trump Show. So Fox does what it does, ignores what it ignores. But Murdoch, who has always cared most of all about old-fashioned newspapers, derives satisfaction and a sense of power from the Journal.”

Oliver Darcy notes the White House — including Trump himself — pressured Murdoch to not publish the story.

How Lobbyists Scored Big Wins in Trump’s Tax Law

July 18, 2025 at 9:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Donald Trump’s ‘big, beautiful bill,’ which he signed into law this month, includes major wins for business interests that carried out aggressive lobbying campaigns on Capitol Hill to secure favorable treatment for their industries,” CNN reports.

“An array of special interests raced to shape the legislation — carving out tax breaks for private jets, excluding potentially life-saving drugs from negotiations that would lower costs, and giving two of the world’s richest men a tax windfall for their space companies.”

July 18, 2025 at 8:28 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro will be required to wear an electronic ankle monitor after police carried out search warrants against him on Friday,” Bloomberg reports.

“Bolsonaro, who is about to stand trial over an alleged coup attempt, will also face restrictions on social media use.”

Most Say Trump’s Tax Law Will Just Help the Wealthy

July 18, 2025 at 8:26 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new AP-NORC poll finds about two-thirds of U.S. adults expect the new tax law will help the rich.

“Most — about 6 in 10 — think it will do more to hurt than help low-income people. About half say it will do more harm than good for middle-class people and people like them.”

Just 23% Say Israel’s Actions in Gaza Are ‘Fully Justified’

July 18, 2025 at 8:24 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new CNN poll finds only 23% of Americans say Israel’s actions have been fully justified, a 27-point drop from a October 2023 poll taken shortly after Hamas’ October 7 attacks.

Another 27% now say those actions have been partially justified and 22% say that they have not been justified at all. In October 2023, just 8% said Israel’s actions were not justified at all.

This drop cuts across party lines but is far larger among Democrats and independents.

Some Thoughts on the Trump-Epstein Bombshell

July 18, 2025 at 6:59 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A bombshell report from the Wall Street Journal dropped last night and immediately scrambled the already volatile politics surrounding the Trump administration’s refusal to release the full Jeffrey Epstein files.

At the center of the story: a sexually explicit drawing of a naked woman that Donald Trump allegedly gifted Epstein for his 50th birthday — accompanied by a letter that Trump apparently wrote with the cryptic reference “may every day be another wonderful secret.”

Quote of the Day

July 18, 2025 at 6:14 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“I never wrote a picture in my life. I don’t draw pictures of women. It’s not my language. It’s not my words.”

— President Trump, quoted by Politico, denying he wrote an illustrated letter to Jeffrey Epstein, despite his his well-documented use of doodles.

What’s in the Epstein Files?

July 18, 2025 at 6:08 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

ABC News reports the earlier “phase one” disclosure of the Epstein files contained a little-noticed “three-page catalog of evidence” that “offers a roadmap to the remaining trove of records that President Donald Trump’s administration has declined to release, including logs of who potentially visited Epstein’s private island and the records of a wiretap of Ghislaine Maxwell’s phone.”

Trump to Sue Wall Street Journal

July 18, 2025 at 5:59 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Donald Trump said Thursday he would sue the Wall Street Journal and its owner over a new bombshell report about his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein and directed Attorney General Pam Bondi to begin the process of unsealing grand jury testimony in the disgraced financier’s criminal case,” Politico reports.

“Trump said he had personally warned the Journal’s owner, Rupert Murdoch, and its editor in chief, Emma Tucker, that the letter was ‘fake’ before the report was published, calling the story ‘false, malicious, and defamatory.’”

House Republicans Dangle Possible Vote on Epstein Files

July 18, 2025 at 5:55 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“House Republicans, under pressure from Democrats and their own angry constituents, agreed on Thursday night to lay the groundwork for a potential vote calling on the Justice Department to release material from its investigation of the disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein, breaking with President Trump’s demand that supporters accept his administration’s handling of the case and move on,” the New York Times reports.

“The measure, a nonbinding resolution, has not been scheduled for a vote. It is unclear whether Republicans will ever bring it up, or whether it could muster the support to pass in the face of a deep G.O.P. divide over the Trump administration’s handling of the case of Mr. Epstein, who died by suicide in federal custody while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.”

Why Democrats Didn’t Try to Thwart Trump’s Clawback

July 18, 2025 at 5:54 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“House Democrats passed up what appeared to be a golden opportunity to block a bill codifying $9 billion in DOGE cuts to public broadcasting and foreign aid. In leadership’s telling, victory was never a real possibility,” Axios reports.

“That analysis may not be enough to ward off fierce backlash from the Democrats’ grassroots base, which has been demanding lawmakers use every tool at their disposal to fight the Trump administration.”

House Passes $9 Billion in Spending Cuts

July 18, 2025 at 5:47 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The House passed a bill to slash $9 billion in federal spending early Friday and sent it to President Donald Trump’s desk for his signature,” the Washington Post reports.

“But not before a detour aimed at containing the political fallout from the Trump administration’s failure to release the files of convicted sex-offender Jeffrey Epstein.”

Wall Street Journal: “Both chambers acted before a Friday deadline after which the executive branch would have had to release the funding. The final vote was delayed for several hours Thursday night as Democrats in the House Rules Committee failed to advance an amendment that would require Attorney General Pam Bondi to release records related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein within 30 days.”

White House Shares Trump Diagnosis

July 18, 2025 at 5:43 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The White House on Thursday said that President Donald Trump has been diagnosed with a mild but chronic illness related to his age — a rare admission from one of the nation’s oldest presidents who has long sought to project vigor,” the Washington Post reports.

“Trump has chronic venous insufficiency, the White House physician said in a memorandum, a condition in which the legs have trouble delivering blood back to the heart.”

Trump’s New Alcatraz Could Cost $2 Billion

July 18, 2025 at 5:40 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President’s Trump’s audacious plan to convert Alcatraz back to a maximum- security prison could come with a hefty price tag: $2 billion,” Axios reports.

Trump Tells Bondi to Release Some Epstein Material

July 17, 2025 at 10:29 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump announced Thursday night that he was authorizing Attorney General Pam Bondi to seek the public release of grand jury testimony from the prosecution of the disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein, and Ms. Bondi said she would make that request in federal court on Friday,” the New York Times reports.

“He cited ‘the ridiculous amount of publicity given to Jeffrey Epstein’ for his directive, which falls far short of demands from some congressional Republicans to make public all investigative files collected by the department and the FBI, not just testimony presented in federal court.”

Bondi said in response she’s “ready to move the court tomorrow to unseal the grand jury transcripts.”

Trump Wrote a Letter for Jeffrey Epstein’s 50th Birthday

July 17, 2025 at 10:27 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Wall Street Journal: “The letter bearing Trump’s name, which was reviewed by the Journal, is bawdy—like others in the album. It contains several lines of typewritten text framed by the outline of a naked woman, which appears to be hand-drawn with a heavy marker. A pair of small arcs denotes the woman’s breasts, and the future president’s signature is a squiggly ‘Donald’ below her waist, mimicking pubic hair.”

The letter concludes: “Happy Birthday — and may every day be another wonderful secret.”

In an interview, Trump denied writing the letter or drawing the picture: “This is not me. This is a fake thing. It’s a fake Wall Street Journal story.”
