Mamdani Catches Cuomo In Rank Choice Voting
The final Emerson College Polling/PIX11/The Hill survey of the New York City Democratic mayoral primary finds Andrew Cuomo leading with 35% support, followed closely by Zohran Mamdani at 32%, and Comptroller Brad Lander at 13%.
City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams follows with 8%, Scott Stringer with 3%, and 4% of voters remain undecided ahead of Tuesday’s election.
The survey allowed voters to rank up to five candidates in order of preference. The ranked-choice voting simulation over eight rounds ends with Mamdani at 52% and Cuomo at 48%.
Rahm Emanuel vs. JB Pritzker Would Be ‘Awkward’
Rahm Emanuel admits the potential of taking on JB Pritzker in a 2028 presidential run is “going to be awkward,” NBC News reports.
Asked to expound on what would make it awkward, the famously unguarded Emanuel said: “It’s so fucking — it’s self-evident, Jesus Christ.”
The Response to the Response Could Get Ugly
Wall Street Journal: “A decision by Iran to expand the war by targeting U.S. forces or assets would all but ensure a violent U.S. response that could drag out the fighting and raise the risk of the collapse of the regime.”
Playbook: “The regime has been hammered by Israel and can hardly now afford an escalating conflict with the U.S. Equally, it will look ruinously weak if there is no response at all. And this is a regime that first and foremost must protect its own position.”
Iran Threatened to Unleash Attacks by Sleeper Cells
“Iran sent a communiqué to Trump in the days before last night’s strikes on its nuclear facilities threatening to activate sleeper-cell terror inside the United States if it were attacked,” NBC News reports.
Meanwhile, Vice President J.D, Vance said there is a lack of “full accounting” of those who may have entered the country during President Joe Biden’s term without proper vetting.
Said Vance: “We know that some of those people were on terrorism watch lists.”
A Big Week for Trump’s Agenda
Punchbowl News: “Domestically, this is a massive week for Trump and his legislative agenda in Washington. There are just 11 days until July 4. That’s Speaker Mike Johnson, Senate Majority Leader John Thune and Trump’s deadline to get the “One Big, Beautiful Bill” signed into law. This is going to be a huge challenge that requires focus, discipline and, quite frankly, some luck.”
“All told, a lot needs to fall in place for Senate Republicans if they’re to meet Thune’s goal of kicking off the floor process by midweek.”
“The Senate is in the middle of the high-stakes Byrd Bath, with Senate Parliamentarian Elizabeth MacDonough deciding which provisions of the massive GOP package meet the strict guidelines for reconciliation.”
“MacDonough and her team have already thrown a lot out of the bill, including significant pieces of the Senate Banking Committee’s agenda, such as axing all funding for the CFPB.”
Playbook: “The next couple of days are pivotal for the parliamentarian’s rulings on what passes muster for Republicans to avoid the filibuster.”
Nasty Texas Primary Has Republicans in a Panic
Wall Street Journal: “Texans are gearing up for an ugly primary between Cornyn, a two-decade senator arguably associated with the GOP of another era, and Paxton, a MAGA combatant who has prevailed in Texas politics despite repeated accusations of legal and ethical wrongdoing.”
“Their party is gearing up for a headache.”
“Republican leaders fear that nominating Paxton, who has an edge with the farthest-right voters active in primaries, could hand Democrats their best opportunity for a win in Texas in decades. A competitive Texas senate race in the general election, they warn, could cost Republicans upward of $250 million, forcing the party to put resources into a red-leaning state that could go elsewhere and potentially threatening their Senate majority.”
Alaska Just Got Its First-Ever Heat Advisory
“In the high glare of a summer evening in Fairbanks, Alaska, Ciara Santiago watched the mercury climb. A meteorologist at the National Weather Service office, she had the dubious honor of issuing the state’s first-ever official heat advisory as temperatures were expected to hit the mid-80s,” Grist reports.
Officials Don’t Know Fate of Iran’s Uranium Stockpile
“A day after President Trump declared that Iran’s nuclear program had been ‘completely and totally obliterated’ by American bunker-busting bombs and a barrage of missiles, the actual state of the program seemed far more murky, with senior officials conceding they did not know the fate of Iran’s stockpile of near-bomb-grade uranium,” the New York Times reports.
Fears Run High as Iran Weighs Response to U.S. Strikes
“Civilians, diplomats and military officials on several continents were waiting anxiously on Monday to see the ramifications of President Trump’s decision to bomb a trio of Iranian nuclear sites over the weekend, a move that will almost certainly have far-reaching impacts on global security,” the New York Times reports.
“After the bombings on Sunday brought the United States into Israel’s war against Iran, fears grew among American allies and adversaries of a dangerously escalating conflict across the region. American military and intelligence officials detected potential signs that Iran-backed militias were preparing to attack American bases in Iraq, and possibly Syria.”
“Iranian officials appeared to be weighing their options for retaliation against the United States.”
Iran’s Promise of Payback Keeps World Markets on Edge
“Iran vowed retaliation and kept up attacks on Israel following the US strikes on its nuclear facilities over the weekend, fueling fears of a wider war in the Middle East and rattling global markets,” Bloomberg reports.
Reuters: “Iran’s most effective threat to hurt the West would probably be to restrict global oil flows from the Gulf. Oil prices spiked on Monday at their highest since January. But they have not yet shot up to crisis levels, indicating that traders see a path out of the conflict that avoids serious disruption.”
Axios: Iran parliament reportedly backs closing Strait of Hormuz, which could spike oil prices.
Wall Street Journal: The 6 miles of water keeping global markets on edge.
GOP Lawmaker Arrested for Distributing Child Porn
South Carolina state Rep. RJ May (R), who prosecutors say used the screen name “joebidennnn69,” has been arrested and charged with 10 counts of distributing sexual abuse material involving children, The Guardian reports.
A Cornered Iran Gives Few Clues on Response to Bombings
“After the U.S. struck Iran’s most fortified nuclear sites, the regime’s clerical leaders are facing a perilous choice: hit back at the U.S. and risk a widening a war with two militarily superior foes, or return to nuclear talks where they would likely have to give up on nuclear enrichment and their ballistic-missile arsenal, two pillars of the country’s sovereignty,” the Wall Street Journal reports.
“Iran’s missile arsenal and military infrastructure have been degraded by Israel’s military strikes this month, with Israel claiming to have destroyed half of the country’s missile launchers. But the exact extent remains unclear, and Iran possesses other means to strike back such as cyberattacks and possibly terrorist proxies, or disrupting oil shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. Uncertainty over how Iran might respond had stock and oil markets on edge, with U.S. futures moving slightly lower.”
Kamala Harris Leans Towards Governor’s Race
Kamala Harris is leaning toward entering the California gubernatorial race, The Hill reports.
Steve Bannon Takes on Fox News
Steve Bannon has turned his opposition to bombing Iran into a fierce challenge to Fox News, Semafor reports.
Said Bannon: “People on the right are now confronting an unpleasant reality, a great unmasking: The Murdochs don’t put America’s interests first. There needs to be a thorough FARA investigation into Fox’s relationship with a foreign power.”
He added that “their audience is geriatrics — it’s people 70 and over,” and that Fox has “no stroke because it’s not an activist base.”

Flashback Quote of the Day
“Joe Biden went to Europe and advocated for a nuclear power’s regime change, and then 10 minutes later his own White House had to contradict him. Seems like a big deal.”
