Aryan Freedom Network Is Riding High in Trump Era

August 8, 2025 at 7:37 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Reuters: “While the Aryan Freedom Network and other neo-Nazi groups remain on the outermost edges of American politics, broadly regarded as toxic by conservatives and mainstream America, they are increasingly at the center of far-right public demonstrations and acts of violence.”

“Several trends have converged since Trump’s re-election… Trump’s rhetoric has galvanized a new wave of far-right activists, fueling growth in white supremacist ranks. Trump’s pardons of January 6 rioters and a shift in federal law enforcement’s focus toward immigration have also led many on the far right to believe that federal investigations into white nationalists are no longer a priority.”

“And the boundaries of the far right itself are shifting. Ideas once confined to fringe groups like the Proud Boys — who helped lead the January 6 siege — are now more visible in Republican politics, from election denialism to rhetoric portraying immigrants as ‘invaders.’ Trump’s public support and pardons for far-right figures helped normalize those views.”

Arresting Trump’s Opponents Is Easier Said Than Done

August 8, 2025 at 6:33 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “It’s a familiar refrain for Trump’s second term: The far right lusts to see prominent Democrats or Trump adversaries hauled off in handcuffs, only to be let down when their revenge fantasies run into reality.”

The GOP’s Unprecedented Redistricting Power Play

August 8, 2025 at 5:55 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“House Republicans are now aiming to pick up a dozen or more House seats in an unprecedented, Donald Trump-backed redistricting drive, looking to head off a Democratic wave in the 2026 midterms and cement the president’s power,” Punchbowl News reports.

“Republicans are hoping to net a minimum of three House seats in Florida, as we scooped Thursday. Add that to the five seats in Texas, one each in Missouri and Indiana, plus two or three in Ohio, where state law mandates a redraw ahead of 2026.”

“The Supreme Court also has yet to rule in a high-profile Louisiana redistricting case on the 1965 Voting Rights Act that could further alter next year’s congressional landscape.”

Behind the Democratic U-Turn on Redistricting

August 8, 2025 at 5:50 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Democrats are making a full U-turn on redistricting. But they insist they have no choice but to respond in kind when backed into a corner by Republicans,“ Politico reports.

“The last time Democrats were in power, then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi pushed a sweeping package of good-government reforms — including attempts to end partisan gerrymandering. Groups like the National Democratic Redistricting Committee, founded by former Attorney General Eric Holder, had long advocated for changing the system that allowed partisan gerrymandering.”

“Now, Democrats have abandoned their initial hesitation to engage after Texas Republicans — backed by President Donald Trump — launched a mid-decade redrawing to give the GOP five additional seats. Progressives are cheering on leaders like Gov. Gavin Newsom, who triggered the effort to expand the party’s advantage in California by sifting away as many as five seats from Republicans — potentially offsetting the Texas redraw.”

Alabama Is Stuck with Their Current Map

August 8, 2025 at 5:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A federal court said Alabama must use independently drawn congressional maps that created a second Black-majority district more favorable to Democrats in the state for the rest of the decade, Politico reports.

Trump Doubles Reward for Arrest of Venezuela’s President

August 8, 2025 at 5:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Trump administration is doubling to $50 million a reward for the arrest of Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro, accusing him of being one of the world’s largest narco-traffickers and working with cartels to flood the U.S. with fentanyl-laced cocaine,” the AP reports.

Trump’s Solution for Farmers Not Coming Soon

August 8, 2025 at 5:28 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “Trump keeps saying he’ll solve the politically fraught problem of reconciling the need for undocumented farm labor with his mass deportation plan. But the White House does not appear close to a policy decision — and farmers are getting frustrated with the delays.”

“Even as angst grows among the nation’s farmers, no new policy is imminent, according to White House aides, farm lobbyists and people familiar with the discussions.”

Trump Says Federal Law Enforcement Will Patrol D.C.

August 8, 2025 at 5:20 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The White House announced on Thursday that it will use federal law enforcement officers to help police Washington D.C.,” Politico reports.

“The move comes one day after President Donald Trump threatened to take over the city’s police force in response to an attempted hijacking that left one Trump administration staffer injured.”

“Commercial satellite images show the Israeli military building up troops and equipment near the border with Gaza that would support a possible new ground invasion of the Palestinian enclave,“ NBC News reports.

“The images show troop movements and formations that the four sources recognized as signs of an imminent major ground operation.”

Trump Turns the Screws on the Fortune 500

August 7, 2025 at 8:30 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “Trump has systematically taken on every institution he’s come across — academia, government, the legal system, and the media — and bent them to his will. Now the Fortune 500 is being put through the wringer.”

Democrats’ Lead Grows in the Generic Ballot

August 7, 2025 at 5:41 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new CNBC poll finds there was a modest rise in the public’s preference for the Democrats to control Congress, rising to a 49% to 44% advantage from 48% to 46% in April.

Vance’s Meeting on Epstein Took Place at White House

August 7, 2025 at 5:39 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A much-anticipated meeting between Attorney General Pam Bondi, FBI Director Kash Patel, Vice President JD Vance and others was moved from Vance’s residence to the White House Wednesday night after intense media coverage,” CNN reports.

“They discussed a number of topics, including the Jeffrey Epstein case and potential next steps.”

Republicans Look for More Seats in Florida

August 7, 2025 at 5:32 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Florida has entered the redistricting chat. And it’s potentially a really big deal,” Punchbowl News reports.

“At the urging of GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis, the Florida House speaker created a special committee for mid-decade congressional redistricting on Thursday. This is a significant escalation of the nationwide redistricting wars and could prove a major boon for House Republicans — if it happens.”

“Republicans believe they can net between three and five seats in Florida, depending on how aggressive the legislature wants to get. The other big issue is whether Florida GOP leaders can work around a state law prohibiting explicit partisan gerrymandering.”

Huge caveat: “But under a five-district scenario, some of these new seats might be purple instead of red.”

Trump Opens Door for New Investments in Your 401(k)

August 7, 2025 at 5:13 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Millions of Americans saving for retirement through 401(k) accounts could have the option of putting their money in higher-risk private equity and cryptocurrency investments, according to an executive order signed Thursday by President Donald Trump that could give those financial players long-sought access to a pool of funds worth trillions,” the AP reports.

“There is no immediate change in how people invest part of their work earnings. Federal agencies would need to rewrite rules and regulations to allow the expanded choices, and that would take months or more to complete.”

Federal Judge Halts Construction at ‘Alligator Alcatraz’

August 7, 2025 at 5:11 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A federal judge in Miami on Thursday ordered construction to be paused at Florida’s Alligator Alcatraz, the first state-run detention center in the country opened to accommodate the Trump administration’s arrest of immigrants,” the Washington Post reports.

“The ruling by U.S. District Judge Kathleen Williams for the two-week halt to new construction at the facility in the Everglades followed a hearing in a lawsuit filed by environmental groups and joined by the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians.”
