Former Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) said he’s “returning to public service” — this time as a board member of a state-created Florida nonprofit, Politico reports.
Trump on Collision Course with Senate Republicans
“President Trump’s push for stricter voter eligibility laws is colliding with a newly defiant Republican Senate, setting up a multifront battle ahead of midterm elections as his administration lobbies on Capitol Hill for more money to pay for the war in Iran,” the Wall Street Journal reports.
“With just months to go until the fall elections, Trump has found himself at odds with Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) and other Republican lawmakers, who say the votes aren’t there for his top priority: the SAVE America Act, a bill that would tighten voting rules nationwide.”
Senate GOP Leader Expects Congressional Vote on Iran
“Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) said Tuesday that he expects Congress would likely vote on any broader Iran deal that emerges from the Trump administration’s 60-day negotiating window, though he said he does not yet know what form that vote would take,” CNBC reports.
Housing Bill Threatened in GOP Elections-Bill Spat
“The long-anticipated bipartisan housing bill is under threat from a Florida Republican who threatened to ‘shut the floor down’ if House GOP leaders move forward with passing it Tuesday,” Politico reports.
“Rep. Anna Paulina Luna said Republicans instead need to prioritize passage of the SAVE America Act, the GOP elections bill that has been stuck in the Senate for months.”
Senate Votes to Halt Iran War
“The Senate on Tuesday voted to cut off the U.S. military campaign against Iran, handing a fresh loss to President Donald Trump despite his attempts to convince lawmakers and the public that a deal to end the war is at hand,” Politico reports.
“Four Republicans broke ranks to help approve a resolution to block further military action unless it is green-lighted by Congress.”
“The war powers measure is largely symbolic — the resolution cleared Tuesday doesn’t go to the president to sign or veto. But the bipartisan 50-48 vote is a damaging milestone for the Trump administration: Both the Senate and House have now weighed in against the Middle East conflict that’s stretched on for more than 100 days. The same measure passed the House in early June after months of close calls.”

AI Model Breached NSA Classified Systems in Hours
“Anthropic’s flagship Mythos AI model reportedly infiltrated nearly all of the National Security Agency’s classified systems within a few hours during an authorized red-team evaluation on June 11,” Cyber Security News reports.
“This incident now seems to be the main reason for a broad U.S. government directive on export controls issued the following day.”
Welcome Bags Planned for White South African Refugees
“In the coming weeks, the United States plans to provide a welcome gift to white South Africans entering the United States as refugees,” the New York Times reports.
“They will get an Android tablet, an American flag and copies of the Constitution and Declaration of Independence. They will also receive a packet of literature that provides a sanitized, Trump-approved view of American and South African history, one that criticizes racial equity and civil rights laws and promotes claims of discrimination against white people.”
“The welcome bags include a report commissioned by Mr. Trump during his first term that downplays the role of slavery in the country’s founding, and a children’s book accusing South Africa’s government of ‘favoring the Black population.'”
Justice Department Backs Down on Reporter Subpoenas
“The Justice Department took the extraordinary step of seeking to force reporters for The Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal to testify before a federal grand jury — but withdrew the subpoenas earlier this month after they were challenged by the news organizations,” the Washington Post reports.
Trump Claims Iran Concessions Iran Denies Making
Aaron Blake: “Ever since releasing a memorandum of understanding last week that appeared heavily slanted toward Iran, the Trump administration has kept claiming Tehran agreed to other major concessions in ongoing negotiations.”
“The problem is that none of them appeared in the MOU — and Iran keeps denying them.”
“And given the Trump administration’s own demonstrated credibility problems, it’s not at all clear whom to trust.”
Italy Seeks to De-Escalate Trump Spat
“Italy’s Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani sought to mend fences with the U.S., saying the two countries should work to de-escalate tensions after a spat between President Donald Trump and Premier Giorgia Meloni,” Bloomberg reports.
Said Tajani: “It’s not a definitive rift; that would be a mistake for all. Italy’s alliance with the US is not only sustainable, it is indispensable.”
GOP Hawks Double Down on Iran Deal Criticism
Rachel Bade: “It’s been just over a week since the administration announced its détente with Iran, but in Washington, Republican infighting over the deal is still dominating the conversation…”
“But the hawks aren’t backing down. Over the past 24 hours, many have doubled down…”
“Now the hawks are seizing on Iran’s purported refusal to allow IAEA inspectors to access bombed facilities — a contradiction of Vance’s high-profile proclamation just Monday.”
Senate Democrats Probe Trump Cryptocurrency Deal
“Top-ranking Senate Democrats are calling for hearings into a secret $500 million investment into the Trump family’s cryptocurrency venture from a group led by a senior Emirati royal,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

Britain’s Next Leader Warned Against Trump-Style Politics
Labour Party lawmaker Andy Burnham, who looks increasingly likely to be Britain’s next prime minister, has previously criticized President Trump, accusing the American leader of bringing “instability” to the world, CBS News reports.
Said Burnham: “The path we’re on, if we are not careful, is a path towards the politics of the United States of America… a polarized, poisonous politics where people in communities don’t work together anymore.”

Trump Can’t Spin His Way Out of His Two Latest Crises
David Graham: “What sets Iran and the Reflecting Pool apart from some previous cases is that he has been unable to deny reality. In the past, Trump has spun setbacks as victories, lying prodigiously to do so. In the case of his bogus claim of a stolen 2020 election, for example, he has relied on generalized public distrust of institutions, robust conservative media, and the arcana of election procedure to help create at least some doubt.”
“But no one can deny that the Reflecting Pool is, in fact, currently green. Nor can Trump spin the war in Iran—not when Americans spent weeks filling up their cars with gas that spiked well above $4 a gallon, and not when ships are visibly bottled up in the strait. These failures are plain in a way that exceeds even Trump’s capacity to get his supporters to believe him over their own eyes.”
Pro-Life Lawmaker Faced Crisis from Abortion Ban
Rep. Kat Cammack (R-FL), a pro-life Republican, told Tara Palmeri that she nearly died during a pregnancy complication that required an abortion.
Cammack broke down in tears and said she feared she might die while medical professionals debated whether they could legally provide treatment.
Cammack later asked Palmeri not to publish that portion of the interview.

“The decision revived a pillar of President Trump’s mass deportation plans.”
Dead Ducks Appear in Reflecting Pool
“When the Lincoln Memorial’s Reflecting Pool was replenished this month after a $14 million-plus renovation, ducks quickly took to the water. Tourists delighted at the sight of ducklings paddling through the pool,” the Washington Post reports.
“But then, over the weekend: a disturbing discovery.”
“A duck carcass was photographed floating in the algae-filled water… Then, two other dead ducks were found in a pond at Constitution Gardens on the National Mall — roughly 250 feet from the Reflecting Pool.”
