Punchbowl News: “Whether it’s the White House ballroom project, the ‘anti-weaponization fund,’ Iran, or other issues, Trump seems to want to pick fights with Republicans as much as he does Democrats. It’s hurting the president, whether he cares or not.”
Trump in Defeat
Jonathan Lemire: “President Trump lost. The war he waged against Iran promises to conclude in a humbling whimper with the signing of a cease-fire agreement later this week. The United States is left weaker—diminished militarily, strategically, economically, and perhaps morally.”
“The war, which the United States fought alongside Israel, accomplished none of the goals that Trump named at the outset. Instead, it only empowered the hard-liners in Tehran and arguably emboldened them to someday seek a nuclear weapon. Despite that, the president was so desperate for the war to end that he repeatedly backed off his threats—allowing Iran to call his bluff—and upbraided his close ally Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for responding to attacks in the region in a manner that jeopardized the negotiations.”
“Trump won’t admit to any of this. He has spent recent days furiously spinning the tentative deal as a clear win, and has seethed at unflattering comparisons with the deal that President Obama struck with Iran more than a decade ago, aides and outside advisers told me.”
Rick Jackson’s Georgia Win Embarrases Trump
“President Donald Trump’s primary victory spree has a new $100 million asterisk,” Politico reports.
“That’s the record-breaking sum the upstart self-funding businessman Rick Jackson spent to defeat Trump’s chosen candidate in the GOP primary for Georgia governor. Jackson’s flood of ads helped drown out Lt. Gov. Burt Jones and other Republicans up and down the ballot, as the billionaire tried to convince voters that he didn’t need Trump’s explicit endorsement to be a true MAGA warrior. In the end, his pitch worked, through persuasion or sheer force.”
“Tuesday’s result is the latest embarrassing and high-profile blemish in what had been a near-perfect record this year for the president.”
Flashback Quote of the Day
“The deal with Iran will go down as one of the most incompetent ever made. The U.S. lost on virtually every point. We just don’t win anymore!”
— President Trump, on Twitter in 2015.
Iran Deal Leaked
Bloomberg has the full text of the memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran on ending the war.
Playbook: “The text says the war will end on all fronts, including in Lebanon. The U.S. will immediately lift the blockade on Iran’s ports and remove all military presence within 30 days of a final agreement. Sanctions and embargoes on Iran will also be lifted immediately, allowing the regime to restart selling oil. And a ‘comprehensive plan’ to reconstruct Iran — with at least $300 billion of outside investment — will be agreed within 60 days.”
“In return, Iran will pledge to fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz within 30 days and formally reiterate that it will never produce nuclear weapons. (These were, of course, their positions before the war began.) But there’s no clear commitment about Iran’s nuclear material, which will be subject to further discussion pending a final agreement in 60 days’ time. And there’s no mention of Iranian shipping tolls, Iranian proxies, Iranian missile depots, Iranian democracy, or any of the other issues touted as possible war aims since the American bombing began on Feb. 28.”
“Trump’s critics are already framing the deal as a total capitulation.”
Trump Delays Clayton Nomination to Push on Voting Bill
“President Trump said on Wednesday that he was delaying his nomination of Jay Clayton as director of national intelligence as he again tried to pressure Congress to pass a strict voter identification law that does not have enough support to advance,” the New York Times reports.
“That would leave Bill Pulte, who has no known national security experience, as the acting director of national intelligence.”
Washington Post: Trump says intelligence chief pick’s hearing is off and Pulte will remain for now.
Trump Quizzed Rupert Murdoch on Vance vs. Rubio
Axios: “In a scene from the forthcoming Regime Change, President Trump asks a guest at a private dinner last year to compare Vice President Vance to Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Trump often does that to stir the pot on 2028 speculation. But this time, the judge was Rupert Murdoch.”
“And with Vance and Rubio sitting awkwardly at the table, Murdoch was notably more effusive about Rubio. The media mogul had privately tried to talk Trump out of choosing Vance as his running mate in 2024.”
The Hill: Poll shows Rubio and Vance neck and neck in 2028 GOP match-up.
MAGA Hawks’ Iran Mutiny Deepens Trump’s Isolation
“President Trump’s Iran deal has opened an explosive second front in MAGA’s civil war, waged by hawkish allies who view U.S. concessions as an existential betrayal of Israel,” Axios reports.
Trump Warns U.S. Will ‘Go Right Back to Dropping Bombs’
President Trump said Wednesday at the G7 conference that the U.S. will “go right back to dropping bombs” if he doesn’t like the Iran deal, CNBC reports.
Said Trump: “It’s a memorandum of understanding, and if I don’t like it, we’ll go back to shooting at them, dropping bombs on their heads. I don’t like it if they don’t behave. We’ll go right back to dropping bombs right smack in the middle of their head.”
Trump at Versailles
Washington Post: “On Wednesday night, Trump will dine at what he acknowledges as the gold standard: Versailles, the enormous, gilded French palace that was home to Louis XIV, the self-appointed Sun King whose embrace of golden grandeur has long fascinated the U.S. president.”
“French President Emmanuel Macron invited Trump to join him at the palace, about 15 miles southwest of Paris, in a bid to extend the U.S. president’s stay in France.”
Judge Orders Kennedy Center to Stay Open
“A federal judge who has temporarily blocked the Trump administration’s plan to close the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts for renovations issued an order on Tuesday that gave officials three days to update him on its plan,” the New York Times reports.
Buzz Grows About Jon Ossoff for President
New York Times: “Despite his relentless disavowals that he has any interest in seeking the presidency, Mr. Ossoff is now regularly mentioned as a potential 2028 contender. There’s good reason for him not to talk about it: Georgia remains a difficult state for Democrats to win, and Mr. Ossoff, the only Democratic incumbent seeking re-election in a state that Mr. Trump won in 2024, can’t afford to turn away from the immediate challenge.”
Georgia Is Next In Redistricting Wars
“Georgia on Wednesday will become the latest Southern state to seize upon the recent Supreme Court decision on voting rights to consider redrawing its congressional lines to favor the Republican Party,” the New York Times reports.
“Gov. Brian Kemp has summoned lawmakers to the Capitol in Atlanta for a special session, aiming to lock in new federal and state legislative lines ahead of the 2028 elections.”
Glenn Beck Claims He Got Secret White House Tour
Glenn Beck told the New York Post that President Trump once made him sign a non-disclosure agreement after giving him a private tour of the Lincoln Bedroom and telling him “some stuff.”
House Majority PAC Adds $11 Million for Two States
“House Democrats’ flagship super PAC is expanding its TV ad reservations in a pair of states upended by redistricting efforts,” NOTUS reports.
“House Majority PAC, which is closely aligned with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, is adding nearly $5 million to Miami and West Palm Beach, covering several battleground seats in south Florida, as well as an additional $6.5 million to Norfolk and Richmond in Virginia.”
State Unemployment Targeted in Antifraud Campaign
“The Trump administration is warning all 50 states that they risk losing federal funding for unemployment insurance benefits if they don’t comply with antifraud efforts,” the Wall Street Journal reports.
“The administration alleges that unemployment benefits have become an easy target for fraud, especially in the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic when millions of Americans relied on aid after losing their jobs.”
White House to Woo Wall Street Dealmakers for DC Jobs
“The Trump administration wants 400 dealmakers to help the US bolster its national security supply chains — and it’s offering salaries as high as $400,000 a year for Wall Street recruits,” Bloomberg reports.
“Under a new hiring initiative, the White House is targeting top dealmaking talent by dangling those potential salaries — which match the president’s pay — with the promise that candidates won’t have to shed their private-sector stock options.”
Americans Are Divided on ‘Culture War’ Issues
CNN Poll: “Just shy of half of Americans think society has gone too far in its acceptance of different cultures, gender identities, sexual orientations and backgrounds, while a little over half reject that characterization.”
“Over the past year, Republicans and independents have grown more likely to say that society’s level of acceptance has gone too far, driving the overall share of the public who takes that view up 6 points from last summer. Close to eight in 10 Republicans now say they feel that way, as do 47% of political independents.”
