Sweden sees a possibility that Russia may seek to test NATO’s cohesion and its commitment to mutual defense through some kind of military attack in the “relatively near term,” Bloomberg reports.
The Rise of the ‘Dude-Bro’ Candidate
Wall Street Journal: “Consider the following qualifications for public office: An accusation of sexual misconduct or marital infidelity; voluntary or involuntary association with any of the following: Tucker Carlson, Hasan Piker or Joe Rogan; use of a racial slur in a public appearance or online post; publicly brawling or picking a fight.”
“Not long ago, ticking any one of these boxes would have meant disqualification. Today, they are effectively bona fides.”
“That, at least, seems to be the political calculation of the dudebro candidate, an emerging type who has dominated the political conversation this primary season. And while the actual electoral results thus far are mixed, the collective precedent is already upsetting long-held assumptions about what it takes to run for office.”
Elon Musk Could Become a Trillionaire Today
New York Times: “SpaceX, Elon Musk’s rocket-building, satellite-launching and artificial intelligence company, is set to go public today at $135 a share. The company plans to sell 555 million of them. That means SpaceX would raise around $75 billion, putting its valuation at $1.77 trillion, the largest I.P.O. in history.”
“It could make Musk the world’s first trillionaire. Or it could tank. Some analysts have argued that SpaceX is significantly overvalued. The market could decide that Musk’s an overpromiser and pass on the stock’s high price.”
U.S. Plans to Pull a Third of NATO Fighter Jets
New York Times: “The United States plans to significantly reduce the aircraft and warships that it makes available for NATO operations in Europe, according to two senior European officials, accelerating America’s effort to scale down the protection it has offered to European allies for eight decades.”
“The decision would limit NATO’s ability to launch long-range strikes and conduct surveillance.”

Switzerland to Vote on Population Cap

Cornyn Predicts ‘Miserable’ Final Two Years for Trump
Sen. John Cornyn was not consoled when President Trump professed on social media that the senior Republican from Texas would “remain my friend for a long time to come” after the president had enthusiastically endorsed the man who defeated Mr. Cornyn, ending his Senate career, the New York Times reports.
Said Cornyn: “If that’s the way friends treat you, you wonder about his enemies.”
He added: “It’s going to make things harder, certainly more expensive in Texas, and make it harder around the country. I don’t say that with any sort of desire for vengeance; I just think that’s the way it’s going to be. He’s going to have the most miserable two years of his life in the last two years of his term, I think, because I think November is going to be a disaster.”
Qatar Pursued Secret Talks with Iran
“The missile attack that Iran launched against Qatar in mid-March sent plumes of smoke rising from the largest natural-gas production facility in the world,” the Washington Post reports.
“It destroyed sections of a plant that provides nearly a fifth of the globe’s gas supply, imperiled multibillion-dollar contracts with China and other clients, and damaged the prospects of finding an earlier end to the war by dragging Qatar, a key mediator between the United States and Iran, into the fight.”
“There was an additional, hidden consequence. The strike also dashed secret efforts by Qatar to keep its gas complex, known as Ras Laffan, off Iran’s target list, according to Middle Eastern security officials and Western officials briefed on the intelligence.”

Despite Trump’s Claims, Iran Says It Hasn’t Decided
“President Trump on Thursday insisted the U.S. was nearing a deal on peace talks with Iran, pulling back from his threats just hours earlier to launch more military strikes and seize Iran’s oil infrastructure,” the Wall Street Journal reports.
“Trump said Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei had signed off on the plan, which he said would be completed in coming days, paving the way for additional talks on Iran’s nuclear program.”
“Tehran said it hadn’t decided.”
John Thune’s Nightmare
Punchbowl News: “The period leading up to the July 4th recess will test Senate GOP leaders’ ability to close out this legislative sprint without allowing Trump to get in their way.”
“Much of this is out of Senate Republicans’ control. Trump has been keeping Thune in the dark on key decisions. Some GOP senators are wondering whether it’s a ploy to pressure Thune to eliminate the filibuster and other Senate traditions that Trump sees as impeding his agenda.”
“Thune and most Senate Republicans are eager to put these battles behind them and shift their focus to the midterm elections. They’re already combating major political headwinds and staring down the possibility — albeit a slim one — that their majority could disappear in the November midterms.”
“Does the nightmare continue? The fear among Senate GOP leaders is that this becomes their new normal when dealing with Trump, regardless of whether it’s carelessness or intentional sabotage by the president.”

Trump Working on Plan to ‘Expunge’ Impeachments
“President Trump and his allies have discussed pushing lawmakers to pass a resolution aimed at voiding his first-term impeachments,” the Wall Street Journal reports.
“The resolution would allow Trump to claim a symbolic victory on a matter that has dogged him since his first term, part of a broader effort to burnish his presidential legacy. It would have little legal significance, however, because the Constitution provides no procedure for undoing an impeachment, according to experts.”
