Kamala Harris Says She’ll Stay Politically Active

April 3, 2025 at 10:33 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“In a rare appearance after her loss in November’s presidential election, former Vice President and potential gubernatorial candidate Kamala Harris on Thursday decried the rollback of fundamental rights under President Trump, urged people to prioritize self-care and pledged to remain active in the fight to safeguard constitutional protection,” the Los Angeles Times reports.

Said Harris: “We can’t go out there and do battle if we don’t take care of ourselves and each other. I’ll see you out there. I’m not going anywhere.

Republicans Play Powerless on Tariffs

April 3, 2025 at 10:31 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Faced with President Donald Trump’s sweeping new tariffs, Wall Street traders voted with their dollars Thursday, selling off trillions in stock market value amid growing fears of inflation and recession,” Politico reports.

“Meanwhile, Republicans on Capitol Hill — who could use their own votes to stop the new tariffs cold — made clear they had no intention of acting anytime soon.”

Another Bonus Quote of the Day

April 3, 2025 at 6:52 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The eighty-year period when the United States embraced the mantle of global economic leadership—when it forged alliances rooted in trust and mutual respect, and championed the free and open exchange of good and services—is over. While this is a tragedy, it is also the new reality.”

— Canadian prime minister Mark Carney, in a speech.

The End of Pax Americana

April 3, 2025 at 6:49 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jonathan Last: “We cannot overstate what has just happened. It took just 71 days for Donald Trump to wreck the American economy, mortally wound NATO, and destroy the American-led world order.”

“He did this with the enthusiastic support of the entire Republican party and conservative movement.”

“He did it with the support of a plurality of American voters.”

“He did not hide his intentions. He campaigned on them. He made them the central thrust of his election. He told Americans that he would betray our allies and give up our leadership position in the world.”

Congress Is Freaking Out About Trump’s Trade War

April 3, 2025 at 6:43 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Philip Elliot: “Republicans at the Capitol understand this is going to hurt not just Americans, but their own political futures. It’s why, in a low-key fever, they’re freaking out.”

“But here’s the rub: while they know this is bad for just about everyone, don’t expect them to exercise their congressional authority to get Trump to back off. Their prospects may be bad right now, but they view crossing a President who leads a vindictive movement as even worse. This is not a moment where anyone in Washington is expecting political bravery.”

Said one Republican lobbyist: “None of this was thought through. The math doesn’t work. The end game doesn’t work. The politics doesn’t work. This is just a mess and it is going to cost Republicans seats.”

White House Pushes Lawmakers to Embrace Tariffs

April 3, 2025 at 5:45 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“White House officials are advising GOP lawmakers on Capitol Hill to focus on the long-term impact of President Donald Trump’s sweeping new global tariffs — without providing much guidance on how to address the free fall in the financial markets Thursday,” Politico reports.

Judge Closer To Finding Trump Officials in Contempt

April 3, 2025 at 5:43 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

NOTUS: “D.C.’s chief judge on Thursday indicated he may find that the Trump administration rushed Venezuelans onto planes bound for a Salvadoran prison last month in a way meant specifically to avoid court intervention mid-operation.”

“Now the question is who, if anyone, at the White House put together the operation and kept it pushing forward — even as a federal judge tried to block it.”

Trump’s Tariffs Threaten to Blot Out His Tax Cuts

April 3, 2025 at 5:21 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Republicans are making progress toward a tax deal that can stop increases at the end of year and even deliver on some of President Donald Trump’s proposed new tax cuts,” Semafor reports.

“His new tariff regime threatens to eclipse all of that.”

“Trump’s party is nervously eyeing the short- and potential long-term economic and political fallout from his blanket new tariffs and escalating retaliatory tariffs against dozens of countries. Most in the party want to give the president time to cut new trade deals, but the blunt market downturn on Thursday and prospect of imminent price increases to everyday products are quickly sinking in on Capitol Hill.”

Said Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY): “If the market today is any indication … they are overshadowing everything else. The markets are roiled up, and I think expressing great dissatisfaction with the tariffs.”

RFK Jr. Says Some Programs Were Cut by Mistake

April 3, 2025 at 5:19 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

On the heels of terminating 10,000 jobs from the Department of Health and Human Services this week, Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. told ABC News some programs would soon be reinstated because they were mistakenly cut.

Said Kennedy: “We’re streamlining the agencies. We’re going to make it work for public health, make it work for the American people. In the course of that, there were a number of instances where studies that should have not have been cut were cut, and we’ve reinstated them. Personnel that should not have been cut were cut — we’re reinstating them, and that was always the plan.”

White House Says No Negotiations on Tariffs

April 3, 2025 at 4:01 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“White House officials have circulated internal talking points telling surrogates that President Donald Trump’s new global tariff regime should not be characterized as a starting point for negotiations,” the Washington Post reports.

“As the world tries to make sense of Trump’s sprawling new import taxes, the administration’s internal instructions say advisers should characterize the tariffs as a response to a national emergency, rather than the basis for potential new trade talks… In addition to the talking points, Trump himself has told advisers the tariffs are not about setting up negotiations.”

Extra Bonus Quote of the Day

April 3, 2025 at 4:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“I wouldn’t want to be the last country that tries to negotiate a trade deal with Donald Trump. The first to negotiate will win — the last will absolutely lose. I have seen this movie my entire life…”

— Eric Trump, on X.

April 3, 2025 at 3:24 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Verge finds the tariff calculations unveiled by President Trump in the Rose Garden yesterday — which make little sense — are “an oversimplified calculation that several major AI chatbots happen to recommend.”

Food Prices Could Soar with Trump Tariffs

April 3, 2025 at 3:15 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The president campaigned on a promise to bring down grocery prices, but the new tariffs announced Wednesday will do the opposite for many staple foods,” Axios reports.

“The groceries and food hit hardest, if these tariffs take effect, are the things mostly not grown or harvested in the U.S.”

“For example: Coffee, chocolate, vanilla, bananas, fruits and vegetables from South America (the berries you buy in winter), a lot of shrimp.”

“The Pentagon’s acting inspector general announced Thursday that he would review Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s use of the Signal messaging app to convey plans for a military strike against Houthi militants in Yemen,” the AP reports.

“The review will also look at other defense officials’ use of the publicly available encrypted app, which is not able to handle classified material and is not part of the Defense Department’s secure communications network.”
