Trump Starts to Turn on the People He Handpicked

August 30, 2025 at 6:39 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“After months of pushing out career government officials and Democratic holdovers, President Trump is starting to turn on some of his own picks,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“On Wednesday, the White House said it was firing Trump’s director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a top public health agency, one month after she was confirmed by the Senate. The White House said she wasn’t aligned with the president. Several other top officials at the agency resigned in response.”

“This week’s turmoil followed ousters at other agencies. Trump replaced the head of the Internal Revenue Service less than two months into the job because the appointee, Billy Long, clashed with officials at the Treasury Department. Two top Justice Department antitrust officials were removed from their roles after clashing with senior officials at the agency who they accused of cutting deals with favored lobbyists. One of them has publicly questioned the integrity of other Justice officials. The White House also removed the acting FEMA administrator after he said the emergency management agency should continue to exist, contradicting others in the administration.”

“In recent days, Trump also pushed his Treasury secretary to fire the agency’s second-in-command and installed a second deputy at the FBI after the White House soured on the first.”

How the Trump-Modi Relationship Unraveled

August 30, 2025 at 6:36 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India was losing patience with President Trump,” the New York Times reports.

“Mr. Trump had been saying — repeatedly, publicly, exuberantly — that he had “solved” the military conflict between India and Pakistan, a dispute that dates back more than 75 years and is far deeper and more complicated than Mr. Trump was making it out to be.”

“During a phone call on June 17, Mr. Trump brought it up again, saying how proud he was of ending the military escalation. He mentioned that Pakistan was going to nominate him for the Nobel Peace Prize, an honor for which he had been openly campaigning. The not-so-subtle implication, according to people familiar with the call, was that Mr. Modi should do the same.”

“The Indian leader bristled. He told Mr. Trump that U.S. involvement had nothing to do with the recent cease-fire. It had been settled directly between India and Pakistan.”

Israel Found a Weak Link

August 30, 2025 at 6:33 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Israel was able to track the movements of key Iranian figures and assassinate them during the 12-day war this spring by following the cellphones carried by members of their security forces.”

While Trump Rattles the World

August 30, 2025 at 6:29 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The leaders of three of the world’s four most powerful nations will meet in China this weekend to discuss how to react to the upending of the international order wrought by the fourth: the U.S. under President Trump,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Chinese leader Xi Jinping is set to welcome Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is currently being wooed by Washington, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whose country—long cultivated by the U.S. as a centerpiece of its aspirations to contain Beijing—has just been slapped by punitive American tariffs.”

Trump Warns Tariff Ruling Will ‘Destroy the United States’

August 29, 2025 at 10:52 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump on Friday warned a ruling striking down most of his tariffs “would literally destroy the United States of America” if it stands, Axios reports.

He suggested an appeal to the Supreme Court was coming soon.

What Happens Next with Trump’s Tariffs?

August 29, 2025 at 10:32 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Paul Krugman: “I have no idea what happens next. The Supreme Court is utterly craven, and may well rule that Trump gets to do whatever he wants. But maybe even they will balk.”

“One crucial thing to understand is that Trump is facing a completely self-inflicted disaster here. He probably could have gotten Republicans in Congress to vote for insane trade policy. But he was impatient, and wanted to start ruling as a dictator right away.”

“I see that Scott Bessent is saying that ruling that Trump’s illegal tariffs are, in fact, illegal will embarrass the United States. I’m not a lawyer, but last I heard you weren’t allowed to act illegally if obeying the law would be embarrassing. Anyway, let’s be clear: It won’t embarrass America. It will embarrass Trump and Bessent. If anything, it might reassure the rest of the world that some vestige of rule of law yet remains in this nation.”

Judge Blocks Deportations Without Due Process

August 29, 2025 at 10:29 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A federal judge on Friday temporarily blocked the Trump administration from rapidly deporting undocumented immigrants detained away from the border without a court hearing, a setback for its mass deportation agenda,” the Washington Post reports.

Trump Cancels $679 Million for Offshore Wind Projects

August 29, 2025 at 8:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Transportation Department on Friday said it was terminating or withdrawing $679 million in federal funding for 12 projects around the country intended to support the development of offshore wind power, the latest of the Trump administration’s escalating attacks against the wind industry,” the New York Times reports.

Trump Fires EPA Employees Over Dissent Letter

August 29, 2025 at 6:35 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Trump administration has fired at least seven Environmental Protection Agency employees for signing a letter nearly two months ago criticizing the agency’s leadership,” the Washington Post reports.

“The move to terminate several staffers marks an escalation in the administration’s effort to clamp down on dissent within the federal bureaucracy.”

Florida Blew $218 Million on ‘Alligator Alcatraz’

August 29, 2025 at 6:25 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Florida could be on the hook for $218 million the state spent to convert a remote training airport in the Everglades into an immigration detention center dubbed ‘Alligator Alcatraz,’” CNN reports.

“The center may soon be completely empty as a judge upheld her decision late Wednesday ordering operations to wind down indefinitely.”

Missouri Will Redraw Congressional Map

August 29, 2025 at 6:14 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“After weeks of internal talks and a pressure campaign by President Donald Trump, Missouri Gov. Mike Kehoe on Friday called lawmakers into a special session beginning next week to redraw the state’s congressional maps,” the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

“Missouri has eight U.S. House seats, two of which are held by Democrats. The task for Republicans is to change the partisan make-up of the Kansas City-focused 5th district, resulting in one additional GOP vote in the House for Trump’s policies.”

Appeals Court Rejects Trump’s Global Tariffs

August 29, 2025 at 5:46 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A federal appeals court late Friday struck down the Trump administration’s signature tariffs, finding that the president had gone too far in his use of emergency powers to rewrite U.S. trade policy,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“The ruling from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit upheld a lower-court decision that undercuts a core tenet of President Trump’s economic agenda. The majority found the president overstepped his authority under a 1977 law known as the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, or Ieepa.”

Reuters: “Trump has made tariffs a pillar of U.S. foreign policy in his second term, using them to exert political pressure and renegotiate trade deals with countries that export goods to the United States.”

New York Times: “At the heart of the fight is the extent to which Mr. Trump may invoke a decades-old economic emergency law to issue withering tariffs on the nation’s foremost trading partners. The law does not mention tariffs, but the president has seized on the statute to apply vast new duties anyway, aiming to remake U.S. trade relationships and raise billions of dollars in revenue.”

Quote of the Day

August 29, 2025 at 3:50 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“I’m looking at kids as I walk through the airports today, as I walk down the street, and I see these kids that are just overburdened with mitochondrial challenges, with inflammation—you can tell from their faces, from their body movements, and from their lack of social connection. And I know that’s not how our children are supposed to look.”

— Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., quoted by Gizmodo.

August 29, 2025 at 3:20 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Higher Prices Are Coming for Household Staples

August 29, 2025 at 3:17 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“U.S. companies have an unwelcome message for inflation-weary consumers: Prices are going up,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Companies including Hormel Foods, J.M. Smucker and Ace Hardware said this week they would raise prices for reasons ranging from higher meat costs to tariffs. Large retailers like Walmart, Target and Best Buy said some tariff-related price increases are already in place. More are on the way.”

Collins Accuses Trump of ‘Clear Violation of the Law’

August 29, 2025 at 3:15 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) accused President Trump of a “clear violation of the law” in a statement over his attempt to cancel $4.9 billion in congressionally-approved foreign aid funding.

Trump Asserts Expansive Power to Fire Fed Governor

August 29, 2025 at 2:33 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Trump administration on Friday asserted vast powers to fire members of the Federal Reserve, as it urged a federal judge to reject a request by Lisa Cook, a Fed governor, to remain at the central bank while she contests the legality of her recent dismissal,” the New York Times reports.

“Lawyers for President Trump pressed their case over a roughly two-hour hearing that concluded with no immediate resolution. But the arguments framed the stakes in the emerging legal battle, which may determine the future of the Fed and its ability to set interest rates free from political meddling.”
