Tiny Company Made Big Purchase of Trump Crypto

May 13, 2025 at 11:09 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A struggling technology company that has ties to China and relies on TikTok made an unusual announcement this week. It had secured funding to buy as much as $300 million of $TRUMP, the so-called memecoin marketed by President Trump,” the New York Times reports.

“The purchase would create clear ethical conflicts, enriching Mr. Trump’s family at the same time that the president tries to reach a deal that would allow TikTok to keep operating in the United States rather than face a congressionally approved ban.”

Democrats Just Flipped Nebraska’s Biggest City

May 13, 2025 at 11:01 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

John Ewing (D) unseated Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert (R) in Tuesday’s officially nonpartisan election, a victory that ends the GOP’s 12-year hold on Nebraska’s largest city, the Downballot reports.

Stothert conceded the race after 9 p.m. local time with Ewing ahead 54% to 46%, though more votes remained to be counted.

Pete Buttigieg Says ‘Maybe’ Biden Hurt Democrats

May 13, 2025 at 10:41 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Pete Buttigieg said President Joe Biden’s decision to seek a second term “maybe” hurt Democrats and that “with the benefit of hindsight, I think most people would agree that that’s the case,” the Washington Post reports.

But Biden’s former transportation secretary also tried to turn the page Tuesday night, saying his party is “not in a position to wallow in hindsight” and using a packed town hall in Iowa to warn against counting on backlash to President Trump in future elections.

The Wild West of Trump’s Presidential Pardons

May 13, 2025 at 7:54 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Wall Street Journal: “Trump has turned the pardon process into the Wild West. What had long been a sober legal proceeding done by career officials in the Justice Department increasingly resides in the White House and depends on the whims of a president who is receptive to arguments of political persecution…”

“Pardon seekers are shelling out to hire lawyers and lobbyists who tout access to those in the president’s inner circle. Others seek to make their case to Trump or his inner circle at places they frequent, showing up at events at Mar-a-Lago, GOP hangouts on Capitol Hill and a collegiate wrestling match. And still others connect with conservative influencers, pitching their case on shows Trump consumes.”

Federal Grand Jury Indicts Wisconsin Judge

May 13, 2025 at 7:35 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A federal grand jury indicted Milwaukee County Judge Hannah Dugan on May 13 on charges that she tried to assist an undocumented immigrant escape arrest from her courtroom last month, putting her at the center of the growing dispute between President Donald Trump and the judiciary,” the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

Virginia House Candidate Comes Out As a Swinger

May 13, 2025 at 7:24 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Yvonne Rorrer figured someone would out her on the campaign trail, so she got ahead of the story and did it herself,” the HuffPoat reports.

“Rorrer, a Democratic candidate for Virginia’s House of Delegates in the 47th district, revealed Saturday on social media that she is married and ethically nonmonogamous, meaning she and her husband consensually date other couples together.”

Said Rorrer: “In politics, people love to dig up the unexpected and spin it into a spectacle. I don’t do shame, and I sure won’t give anyone else the opportunity to tell my story.”

Don Jr. Is the New Hunter Biden

May 13, 2025 at 7:19 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Business Insider: “Last November, only six days after his father was elected president, Donald Trump Jr. made a career move that, on the surface at least, seemed a bit odd. He became a partner in a small investment startup called 1789 Capital, which is based in Palm Beach, Florida, 2 miles from Mar-a-Lago.”

“At that point, 1789 was a microscopic player in the world of venture capital. It had raised less than $200 million, and it hadn’t made many investments beyond leading a group that put $15 million into Tucker Carlson’s new media company…”

“Ever since Trump joined 1789, its portfolio has begun to blossom. Despite its tiny size, the firm has been granted shares in several coveted offerings, including Elon Musk’s SpaceX. The shares, which are widely viewed as an almost certain home run, are essentially an insider deal: To participate in the offering, you typically have to receive an invitation from someone already in the club. In addition, 1789 has invested in Musk’s artificial intelligence company, xAI, as well as a handful of startups that have received or are vying for contracts from the Defense Department.”

“Almost overnight, a VC firm involving the president’s son has become a significant beneficiary of the federal bureaucracy long derided by President Trump as ‘the swamp.’”

Surviving New America

May 13, 2025 at 5:07 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A novel from Political Wire reader Carl Weinschenk was just published: Surviving New America: Hope Thomas and Her Enemies.

“The ascendency of Donald Trump during the past decade is such a dramatic story that it’s easy to overlook what made it possible.”

Ex-GOP Lawmaker to Run But Not as a Republican

May 13, 2025 at 4:29 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Former Republican Michigan U.S. Rep. Dave Trott is considering another bid for Congress in the Detroit suburbs, but this time as a Democrat or an independent candidate after leaving the GOP and labeling President Donald Trump a threat to democracy,” the Detroit News reports.

Dozens Arrested at House Markup

May 13, 2025 at 4:29 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“No sooner had the House Energy and Commerce Committee kicked off its markup of the GOP’s ‘big, beautiful bill’ than protesters descended upon the proceedings,” Politico reports.

“U.S. Capitol Police was forced to quickly arrest 25 people and remove several protestors in wheelchairs from the hearing room amid chants of ‘no cuts to Medicaid’ and ‘waste, fraud and abuse my ass.'”

GOP Lawmaker Made Millions Trading Around Tariffs

May 13, 2025 at 4:26 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A freshman Republican congressman made millions of dollars in personal stock trades as financial markets plunged during the days immediately following President Donald Trump’s April 2 ‘Liberation Day’ tariff binge,” NOTUS reports.

“Rep. Jefferson Shreve of Indiana, one of Congress’ wealthiest members, made more than 140 individual stock purchases and sales between April 7 and April 17 — some of them in companies that fall within the jurisdiction of one of his committees, the records indicate.”

“Shreve traded between $3.44 million and $9.45 million worth of stocks in that April period.”

GOP Lawmaker Would Boot Three Democrats

May 13, 2025 at 4:14 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Buddy Carter (R-GA) “is proposing to strip three New Jersey lawmakers of their House committee assignments after they participated last week in a protest at a Newark migrant detention facility,” Politico reports.

Said Carter: “This behavior constitutes an assault on our brave ICE agents and undermines the rule of law. The three members involved in this stunt do not deserve to sit on committees alongside serious lawmakers.”

Senate Republicans Criticize Trump’s Jet Deal

May 13, 2025 at 3:58 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A number of Republican lawmakers are souring on President Donald Trump’s plans to accept a luxury Boeing 747 aircraft as a gift from Qatar — a rare series of rebukes of the president by his allies in Congress,” Politico reports.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune on Tuesday became the most prominent Republican to express discomfort with the deal, telling reporters there are “lots of issues associated with that offer which I think need to be further talked about.”

Mike Lawler Bashes Ways and Means Chairman

May 13, 2025 at 3:56 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY) harshly criticized the House GOP’s top tax writer over negotiations on expanding the state and local tax deduction, saying Ways and Means Committee Chair Jason Smith (R-MO) “should be reminded that he wouldn’t have a fucking gavel without the members of the SALT caucus,” Politico reports.

Trump’s Free Plane Is Not So Free

May 13, 2025 at 3:45 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Donald Trump insists he’s getting a ‘free, very expensive airplane’ from Qatar’s royal family. But it’s not much of a gift for the American taxpayer,” Politico reports.

“The Qatari Defense Ministry is talking to the White House about transferring the luxury-configured Boeing jet to the Pentagon, which would oversee its retrofitting into a makeshift Air Force One. But a private contractor would have to rip it apart to turn the jet into a flying White House for the president with secure communications and classified upgrades, according to former Air Force officials and lawmakers, an expensive and complicated prospect that could cost taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars.”

Trump Heaps Praise on Saudi Crown Prince

May 13, 2025 at 3:12 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Donald Trump spent the bulk of what was billed as a ‘major foreign policy address’ to outline his vision for the Middle East instead touting his domestic policies and heaping praise on Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman,” ABC News reports.

Said Trump: “He’s your greatest representative, greatest representative. And if I didn’t like him, I’d get out of here so fast. You know that, don’t you? He knows me well. I do — I like him a lot. I like him too much. That’s why we give so much, you know? Too much. I like you too much.”
