Trump May Skip Presidential Debates

December 12, 2019 at 9:43 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump is discussing with his advisers the possibility of sitting out the general election debates in 2020 because of his misgivings about the commission that oversees them,” the New York Times reports.

“Mr. Trump has told advisers that he does not trust the Commission on Presidential Debates, the nonprofit entity that sponsors the debates.”

“Less of a concern for Mr. Trump than who will emerge as the Democratic nominee is which media personality will be chosen as the debate moderator.”

How Trump Deals with Impeachment Pressure

December 12, 2019 at 9:40 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Under pressure over his possible impeachment, President Richard M. Nixon supposedly talked to the paintings in the White House. President Bill Clinton absently toyed with his old campaign buttons. President Trump punches out Twitter messages in the lonely midnight hour,” the New York Times reports.

“Long after his staff has gone home, long after the lights have gone out elsewhere around the capital, the besieged 45th president hunkers down in the upstairs residential portion of the Executive Mansion venting his frustration and cheering on his defenders through social media blasts.”

“No matter what some of his critics say, advisers said he genuinely does not want to be impeached, viewing it as a personal humiliation. Even in private, he accepts no blame and expresses no regret, but he rails against the enemies he sees all around him.”

Divided Court Hears Trump Emoluments Case

December 12, 2019 at 9:36 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “A federal appeals court in Virginia heard arguments Thursday about whether to revive a lawsuit accusing President Trump of violating the Constitution by profiting from his hotel near the White House, in a spirited session that indicated sharp divisions among the judges over the legal consequences of the president’s conduct.”

“The three-hour hearing in Richmond was the first time that a full federal appeals court has considered the so-called emoluments or anticorruption clauses of the Constitution. Mr. Trump is the first president to be sued for violating those clauses, and so far only lower courts or appellate panels have ruled on the three cases against him.”

Exit Poll Predicts Massive Win for Boris Johnson

December 12, 2019 at 5:36 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Boris Johnson’s Conservative Party is on course for a huge majority in Parliament, according to an exit poll from the UK’s three main broadcasters,” CNN reports.

“The projections will be a big disappointment for Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour Party and suggests Johnson will be able to pass his Brexit deal comfortably.”

BBC: “Exit polls have proved to be very accurate in recent years. In 2017 it correctly predicted a hung Parliament, with no overall winner, and in 2015 it predicted the Conservatives would be the largest party.”

December 12, 2019 at 4:57 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Charleston Post & Courier poll in South Carolina finds Joe Biden leading the Democratic field with 27%, followed by Bernie Sanders at 20%, Elizabeth Warren at 19%, Pete Buttigieg at 9%, Cory Booker at 5%, Tom Steyer at 5% and Tulsi Gabbard at 4%.

Trump Campaign Says Impeachment Motivates Base

December 12, 2019 at 4:53 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“As President Trump faced a critical vote on his impeachment Thursday, his top political advisers said the process had already begun to reap benefits for his reelection campaign,” the Washington Post reports.

Said campaign manager Brad Parscale: “This lit up our base, lit up the people that are supporters of the president. They’re frustrated, they’re upset, and that motivates voters. They have ignited a flame underneath them.”

What If Trump Offends Again?

December 12, 2019 at 4:25 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “Democrats are only just beginning to confront the paradox that their imminent impeachment vote creates: What happens when a remorseless president commits the same behavior that got him impeached in the first place — only this time after the House has already deployed the most potent weapon in its arsenal?”

“There’s no roadmap for Congress to handle an already-impeached president who could have as many as five years left in office. Democrats acknowledge there’s no realistic path or political will to revisit impeachment in Trump’s first term, especially with the 2020 election less than a year away.”

“But far from being deterred by impeachment, Trump appears emboldened — suggesting impeachment may not be the kind of bulwark against misconduct envisioned in the Constitution.”

U.S. and China Reach Tentative Trade Deal

December 12, 2019 at 4:19 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The U.S. and China have reached agreement on a tentative trade deal, which President Trump is expected to formally approve this afternoon,” the Washington Post reports.

Said one insider: “The deal is essentially done. The mechanics of how you execute it and how you get it signed still have to be worked out.”

Democrats Hold Edge in Party Affiliation

December 12, 2019 at 3:57 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Gallup: “More Americans continue to identify as Democrats or as ‘Democratic-leaning’ independents than as Republicans or ‘Republican-leaning’ independents. The current 47% to 42% Democratic edge is largely in line with what Gallup has measured over the past five years.”

The agreement in principle sets up votes next week.

‘I Move to Strike the Last Word’

December 12, 2019 at 3:27 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

You’ve heard this quite a bit in the House Judiciary Impeachment markup hearing.

The Congressional Research Service notes the phrase, in this context, really just means I’d like to speak now for five minutes.

What Trump Thinks About Impeachment

December 12, 2019 at 2:56 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

CNN: “Privately, he’s stewing…. Trump is somewhat taken aback that his actions toward Ukraine are ultimately what led to his likely impeachment.”

Said one close adviser: “Frankly, I think he’s a little surprised it’s the Ukraine thing that’s done it.”

Biden Keeps Getting Questions on His Son, Hunter

December 12, 2019 at 2:51 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “He has addressed the matter on at least five occasions in the past week — at times offering responses that seemed to put more distance between himself and his son’s decision to join the Burisma board.”

“The issue remains an emotionally difficult one for Biden, and he did not do any special preparations regarding what to say in the lead-up to his recent spate of appearances…”

Trump Has an Impeachment War Room After All

December 12, 2019 at 2:49 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “The White House impeachment battle begins every day shortly after sunrise, when [Trump’s] press secretary, his acting chief of staff and a group of lawyers crowd into the wood-paneled second-floor office of Pat Cipollone, the White House counsel, to synthesize the latest Capitol Hill legalese. An hour or so later, another group convenes downstairs in the office of Stephanie Grisham, the press secretary, to discuss the day’s top stories. Impeachment is usually one of them.”

“Then, in an underground office, two new additions — Tony Sayegh, a former Treasury Department spokesman, and Pam Bondi, a former Florida attorney general — get to work on the job they were hired last month to do: attack the process.”

Warren Goes After Her Rivals

December 12, 2019 at 2:33 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Elizabeth Warren came out swinging on Thursday as the Democratic primary slugfest heats up with Iowa on the horizon,” CNN reports..

“Speaking in New Hampshire, the Massachusetts senator ramped up what has been a stop-and-go process of directly criticizing her top moderate rivals, taking a series of unmistakable shots at Pete Buttigieg and Joe Biden. Michael Bloomberg, too, came into her crosshairs.”

“The common theme: Their reliance on campaign cash from rich donors — or, in Bloomberg’s case, his own bank account — makes them untrustworthy and unlikely to spend political capital on policies that benefit the working class at the expense of wealthy contributors. Warren herself has sworn off big donors in the primary.”

House Passes Sweeping Bill to Lower Drug Prices

December 12, 2019 at 2:27 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The House on Thursday passed a sweeping bill aimed at lowering prescription drug prices, a step toward a long-held Democratic goal that was met with sharp Republican resistance,” The Hill reports.

“The bill passed on a largely party-line vote of 230 to 192. The measure, which would allow the government to negotiate lower prices for prescription drugs, is one of House Democrats’ top priorities, and is expected to be touted by vulnerable Democrats up for reelection next year.”

Bonus Quote of the Day

December 12, 2019 at 1:36 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“It’s not a political party anymore. It’s a cult.”

— Former Rep. Joe Walsh (R-IL), quoted by the Quad City Times, on the Republican Party.
