How Chuck Schumer Gets His Mojo Back
Tara Palmeri: “Republicans have had a remarkable two week stretch—they made Schumer blink and pass the continuing resolution. He in turn had his ass handed to him by everyone from Nancy Pelosi to AOC. But in the next two months there is a high probability that Republicans will be crawling back to Schumer when they have to raise the debt ceiling again, something that no Republican wants to put on their scorecard.”
“Trump relied on Democrats three times during his first term to raise the limit. In fact, just 65 Republicans in the House and 17 in the Senate voted in favor of it in 2019. Given this dynamic, it would seem impossible to pass it along a party-lines through reconciliation. It’s only happened four times in history and surely Republicans are not in a position to make that happen when they only have two to three votes to lose. Raising the debt ceiling is the critical first step before passing the real prize for Republicans—tax reform.”
“The trap for Republicans could be the thing that gives Schumer his mojo back—an opportunity to restore his reputation by winning some concessions for Democrats. But after this past week, the expectations from the party are going to be steep.”
Musk Gets Access to Top-Secret Plan for War With China
“The Pentagon is scheduled on Friday to brief Elon Musk on the U.S. military’s plan for any war that might break out with China,” the New York Times reports.
“Providing Mr. Musk access to some of the nation’s most closely guarded military secrets would be a dramatic expansion of his already extensive role as an adviser to President Trump and leader of his effort to slash spending and purge the government of people and policies they oppose.”
Musk Paying Wisconsin Voters $100 to Sign Petition
“Elon Musk’s political action committee is offering Wisconsin voters $100 to sign a petition expressing their opposition to ‘activist judges,’ a cause that President Trump is pressing as judges block or delay several parts of his agenda,” Axios reports.
Ron DeSantis’ Uncertain Future
Politico: “It was only a little more than a year ago that Florida’s Republican governor came in second to President Donald Trump in the Iowa caucuses. Trump’s victory last November has triggered a tidal wave of changes in the federal government, including an emphasis on the same policies and ideas that were first championed by DeSantis when Trump was out of office.”
“And yet this one-time rising conservative star is now grappling with a diminished relevance in America’s political firmament. He can’t run for governor again in 2026. DeSantis has also made it clear that he had no interest in heading to the U.S. Senate like his predecessor Rick Scott. He’s facing resistance from emboldened Republicans who once bent to his will and Trump has endorsed a candidate to succeed DeSantis even though the governor’s wife Casey is seriously considering her own run.”
Trump Rescinds Order Targeting Law Firm Paul Weiss
“President Trump on Thursday rescinded an executive order targeting Paul Weiss, as one of the nation’s top law firms bent to White House pressure and agreed to a series of concessions to avoid a client exodus,” the Wall Street Journal reports.
“The agreement between Paul Weiss and the White House includes a commitment by the firm to provide $40 million in pro bono legal services to support the administration’s initiatives, such as assisting veterans and fighting antisemitism.”
“Trump agreed to lift the order after meeting with the firm’s chair, Brad Karp, who worked behind the scenes to mitigate the fallout for Paul Weiss following the president’s sanctions against the firm last Friday.”
Cori Bush’s Husband Charged with Wire Fraud
“The husband of former congresswoman Cori Bush (D-MO) has been charged in connection with more than $20,000 in payments from the pandemic-era Paycheck Protection and Economic Injury Disaster Loan programs, according to an indictment filed in D.C. federal court on Thursday,” the Washington Post reports.
Judge Moves Closer to Holding Trump Officials in Contempt
“A federal judge in Washington edged closer on Thursday to holding the Trump administration in contempt for possibly having violated an order he issued last weekend pausing the deportation of scores of Venezuelan immigrants under a rarely invoked wartime statute,” the New York Times reports.
“In an angrily written order, the judge, James Boasberg, told the administration to explain to him by Tuesday why officials had not violated his instructions when they allowed two flights of immigrants to continue on to El Salvador even after he directed the planes to return to the United States.”
Federal Prosecutor Explains Why He Quit
A prosecutor with years of experience at the U.S. Department of Justice has resigned amid major changes from the Trump administration, telling NPR: “It just was not a Department of Justice that I any longer wanted to associate with.”
Judge Blocks Elon Musk from Social Security Data
“A federal judge has barred Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency from accessing sensitive systems at the Social Security Administration, saying the group appears to be on a ‘fishing expedition’ that could jeopardize the data of millions of people,” Politico reports.
The judge “also barred the group from installing software in Social Security systems and to remove any software that has been installed since President Donald Trump began his second term.”
Order Lets Agents Enter Homes Without Warrants
“Trump administration lawyers have determined that an 18th-century wartime law the president has invoked to deport suspected members of a Venezuelan gang allows federal agents to enter homes without a warrant,” the New York Times reports.
“The disclosure reflects the Trump administration’s aggressive view of presidential power, including setting aside a key provision of the Fourth Amendment that requires a court order to search someone’s home.”
“It remains unclear whether the administration will apply the law in this way, but experts say such an interpretation would infringe on basic civil liberties and raise the potential for misuse. Warrantless entries have some precedent in America’s wartime history, but invoking the law in peacetime to pursue undocumented immigrants in such a way would be an entirely new application.”
Greene Accused Jasmine Crockett of Organizing Terrorism
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) accused Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) of “organizing political violence and terrorism” while alerting Attorney General Pam Bondi in a social media post.

Bondi Brings Terrorism Charges for Tesla Attacks
“Attorney General Pam Bondi announced the Department of Justice is charging three people for allegedly destroying Tesla cars or properties,” Politico reports.
“The charges come as Tesla has faced widespread protests and criticism in the last few weeks, tied to its CEO, Elon Musk, and the Department of Government Efficiency’s moves to remake the federal government.”
More Migrants Sent to Guantánamo Bay
“The Trump administration sent a new group of migrants to the U.S. military base at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, on Thursday to await deportation, claiming that they may have ties to a Venezuelan gang,” the New York Times reports.
Quote of the Day
“I think we need to start messaging right now. We need to put our experts on this. How will we build back next time? I think it’s an opportunity. I think it’s an opportunity to create the agencies the way we saw them in the first place, functioning better, without all the barnacles. So, Trump might be doing us a favor. He stripped it down, he blew the motor up. We’re going to put a new motor in it and take off. And I think that’s how we have to start thinking about it.”

Murkowski Says Musk Is Trying to Silence Republicans
Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) warned this week that Republicans are being intimidated into silence by Elon Musk and other pro-Trump influencers, in a fiery takedown of the political climate in her party, Mediaite reports.
Said Murkowski: “I’m not going to compromise my own integrity by hiding from my words when I feel they need to be spoken. I’m going to take the criticism that comes. And it may be that Elon Musk has decided he’s going to take the next billion dollars that he makes off of Starlink and put it directly against Lisa Murkowski.”
She added: “That’s why you’ve got everybody just. Like, ziplipped, not saying a word, because they’re afraid they’re going to be taken down, they’re going to be primaried, they’re going to be given names in the media. You know what? We cannot be cowed into not speaking up.”
