Employers Pulled Back on Hiring
“Employers continued to create jobs but pulled back on hiring, a sign that more businesses are putting expansion plans on hold as they deal with economic uncertainty,” the New York Times reports.
“The economy added 73,000 jobs last month, the Labor Department reported on Friday, lower than economists’ expectations. The unemployment rate slightly rose to 4.2 percent, up from 4.1 percent the month before.”
Bloomberg: “Trump is back at it on Truth Social, again calling for, yes, you guessed it, a lower Fed rate.”

Trump Tariff Blitz Unleashes Delayed Shock to Economy
“Four months after Donald Trump shocked the world and roiled markets by unveiling a placard full of tariff rates at the White House Rose Garden, his revisions unveiled Thursday generated a more subdued response among investors,” Bloomberg reports.
“But at an average of 15%, the world is still facing some of the steepest U.S. tariffs since the 1930s, roughly six times higher than they were a year ago.”
CNBC: Trump unleashes sweeping new tariffs in a blow to global trade.
Reuters: Trump hits dozens more countries with steep tariffs.
Wyden Calls for Probe of Epstein’s Work for Leon Black
Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) “broadened his attack on the Trump administration’s handling of records about the financing of Jeffrey Epstein’s sex trafficking network, urging the Internal Revenue Service to investigate his tax and estate planning work for private equity titan Leon Black,” Bloomberg reports.
Said Wyden: “It is unthinkable that transactions amounting to tens of millions of dollars paid to a known criminal for the purpose of helping a mega-wealthy individual dodge billions in taxes were never audited or investigated. When Americans think the system is rigged, this is the kind of abuse they think about.”
Bonus Quote of the Day
“Perhaps it’s naive of me, someone who has seen a lot that most people haven’t seen but I believed that on some level, there are many, there should be many, who consider themselves to be guardians of our system and our democracy who just capitulated. And I didn’t, didn’t see that coming.”

A Blunt Diagnosis for the Democrats
Rep. Sarah McBride (D-DE) believes Democrats need to become more likable to recover from their record-low approval among voters, Politico reports.
Said McBride: “I think voters feel like Democrats have sort of been assholes to them.”
She added: “I do think that a voter asks two questions when they’re considering who to vote for. The first question is, does this candidate, does this party like me? And by extension, do they respect me?”
More: “If you can’t answer that first question to a voter’s satisfaction, they won’t even get to the second question, which is, what does this party think? What does this candidate think? And I think we lost that first question.”
Trump’s Options for Dousing the Epstein Fire
Ankush Khardori: “There are no good solutions — but some are worse than others.”
Quote of the Day
“Recently, I made the decision that, for now, I don’t want to go back in the system. I think it’s broken. I always believed that as fragile as our democracy is, our systems would be strong enough to defend our most fundamental principles and I think right now, they’re not as strong as they need to be.”

Netanyahu Has a Big Problem with Democrats
“Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s prosecution of the war against Hamas in Gaza is driving an unprecedented number of Senate Democrats to support measures blocking weapons sales to the longtime U.S. ally,” Punchbowl News reports.
“Once backed by just a handful of progressives, Sen. Bernie Sanders’ (I-Vt.) months-long effort to block the transfer of certain offensive weapons to Israel now has the support of more than half the Senate Democratic Caucus. It’s also a position that’s more aligned with the Democratic base.”
Laura Loomer Runs ‘Tip Line’ to Purge the ‘Disloyal’
Politico: “More than a dozen high ranking officials across the administration have been forced to leave their jobs or had their nominations or promotions derailed in the first six months of Trump’s return to Washington. Nearly all of the ousters have come after individuals were targeted by outside allies who convinced the president that they weren’t sufficiently loyal. And in many of those cases, the axe came down after officials found themselves in the crosshairs of right-wing activist Laura Loomer.”
Said Loomer: “I’m happy to take people’s tips about disloyal appointees, disloyal staffers and Biden holdovers. And I guess you could say that my tip line has come to serve as a form of therapy for Trump administration officials who want to expose their colleagues who should not be in the positions that they’re in.”
“Loomer has emerged as a blunt enforcer of allegiance to Trump.”
