A Leadership Vaccuum at the Federal Health Agencies

June 10, 2026 at 2:21 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

NBC News: “There’s a glaring lack of permanent leadership at the country’s major health agencies. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has gone from one acting director to another. The commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration was ousted last month. The FDA’s second-in-command seat remains empty. And there has been no surgeon general for President Donald Trump’s entire second term.”

“Following a wave of firings and resignations over the last four months, about half of the positions listed on the leadership pages for the CDC, the FDA and the National Institutes of Health are filled by temporary appointees or simply remain vacant.”

Party Over Purity

June 10, 2026 at 2:19 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Few Americans would abandon their party’s candidate over controversies such as Democrat Graham Platner’s Nazi-linked tattoo in Maine or Republican Ken Paxton’s fraud indictment in Texas, according to a new Reuters/Ipsos poll, highlighting deep partisan divides that make winning paramount.”

“Two-thirds ‌of party-aligned respondents said they sometimes have to vote for a candidate they don’t like just to stop the other party from winning power.”

Prosecutors Probe Big Banks for Alleged ‘Debanking’

June 10, 2026 at 2:06 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Wall Street Journal: “The Justice Department has sent far-ranging subpoenas to several of America’s largest banks including JPMorgan, Citigroup and Bank of America, requesting information about whether they ‘debanked’ clients, or improperly closed customer accounts for political reasons.”

“The subpoenas from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Washington, D.C., headed by Jeanine Pirro, escalate a campaign by President Trump to root out evidence that banks allegedly discriminated against conservatives and politically controversial industries, including his own family.”

Trump Says ‘I Love the Inflation’

June 10, 2026 at 1:51 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump on Wednesday applauded the latest inflation spike, saying the numbers are “great” and “I love the inflation” because the U.S. “taking out” what he called “millions” of barrels of Iranian oil in the dead of night, CBS News reports.

Said Trump: “The numbers were great. You know what I really love? I love the inflation. You know why? Because as soon as this war is over. You know, I can say it now, something you didn’t know. Did you know we’ve been taking out millions of barrels of oil? Nobody knows it. You know who doesn’t know about it? Iran, until right now. We took out the other night, 22 ships. Late at night, with no lights. Because they don’t have any radar because we blasted the crap out of it. We took out. That’s why oil’s $85 a barrel.”

Hopes Dim for Renewing Spy Law as Trump Digs In

June 10, 2026 at 1:49 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Hopes were fading on Wednesday for a breakthrough in Congress to salvage a warrantless surveillance law before its expiration this weekend, after President Trump dug in on naming a close ally who has alienated members of both parties to a top intelligence post.”

“Unless lawmakers act by midnight on Friday, the law, known as Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, or FISA, will sunset. It is the legal underpinning for what is widely considered to be the most powerful surveillance tool the federal government has at its disposal, credited with generating intelligence that thwarts terror plots, defangs foreign hackers, curtails drug trafficking and gleans key insights for policymakers about chief rivals like China and Russia.”

Trump Signs Bill to Fund Immigration Enforcement

Bloomberg: “President Donald Trump signed a $70 billion package that fully funds immigration enforcement for the rest of his term, capping off a fight with dissident Republicans over a payout fund for political allies.”

Trump Boils Over Waiting for Iran

June 10, 2026 at 1:44 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Axios: “The trigger for President Trump’s strikes on Iran was the downing of a U.S. helicopter, but behind the scenes Trump had been growing more and more frustrated over nearly two weeks of waiting for an Iranian response to his latest offer that still has not arrived.”

“The strikes on Tuesday evening were intended to restore some leverage, but be calibrated such that no one would be killed and the possibility of a deal would not be foreclosed.”

Hegseth’s Pentagon Faith Purge Creates a Holy Mess

June 10, 2026 at 12:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Magazine: “One of the problems with abandoning the separation of church and state, as Christian nationalists like Pete Hegseth are attempting to do, is that it puts government in the position of adjudicating the legitimacy of various religions. It can be tricky. Hegseth has inaugurated unprecedented monthly worship services at the Pentagon, and presumably he makes the call as to who officiates.”

“These aren’t open to the public, but at least two services have been presided over by ministers of the Defense secretary’s own ultra-conservative, neo-Calvinist Communion of Reformed Evangelical Churches denomination, which was founded by the very controversial Rev. Doug Wilson of ‘men should have the vote for their families’ fame.”

“At least attendance at those services is voluntary. But now Hegseth’s religious views are impacting how chaplains are assigned to men and women in the military.”

— Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), at his primary victory speech.

Trump Officials Lay Out Aggressive Timeline for Arch

June 10, 2026 at 11:05 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “Federal officials are laying more groundwork to begin construction on President Donald Trump’s planned 250-foot-tall triumphal arch, sharing additional documents that detail the project’s scope and an aggressive timetable for potentially completing work before Trump’s term ends.”

“According to National Park Service documents posted this month, the administration envisions 20 hours per day of construction on the arch, year-round, in hopes of completing the project within two to three years. Construction experts said that timeline — which would involve two 10-hour daily shifts — is unusually aggressive for a nonemergency project.”

Election Results in Maine Could Take More Than a Week

June 10, 2026 at 11:03 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “More than 12 hours after polls closed, multiples primary races in Maine — including for the Democratic and Republican nominations for governor, and for a Democratic congressional primary — had not yet not been decided by Wednesday morning.”

“But the delay was expected because those races featured large fields of candidates. Maine uses a ranked-choice voting system, sometimes referred to as an ‘instant runoff’ election. If a single candidate fails to win at least 50 percent of the vote, the next step is ranked-choice tabulation, which can take more than a week.”

Americans Are Paying More to Travel This Summer

June 10, 2026 at 11:01 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “As the war in Iran has squeezed energy supplies, its impact is beginning to ripple across sectors that rely heavily on fuel and gas, like travel.”

“Americans planning to travel this summer are finding far steeper prices than they did a year ago. Federal inflation data released on Wednesday showed airline fares averaged across cities in the United States had rocketed up 26.7 percent in May compared with the same time last year. They were up nearly 3 percent from the month before.”

The Battle for the Senate Could Come Down to Maine

June 10, 2026 at 11:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Graham Platner’s primary victory in Maine sends Democrats barreling into one of this year’s most important Senate contests with a rush of insurgent energy but gnawing uncertainty about the withering Republican scrutiny to come.”

“His decisive victory offered a vivid display of the deep Democratic desire for a new generation of leaders, suggesting that many primary voters in Maine embraced his populist economic message and working-class appeal.”

“Yet in nominating Mr. Platner, Democrats are making an enormous bet in their quest to regain control of the Senate, staking their chances in a crucial race on an untested and scandal-plagued oysterman.”

Iran Conflict Is Entering a Dangerous New Phase

June 10, 2026 at 10:59 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Wall Street Journal: “The U.S. and Iran are entering a risky new phase of conflict in which both sides are attempting to maintain pressure and respond to provocations without returning to all-out war, but with an ever-present danger of stumbling across each other’s red lines and triggering a dangerous escalation.”

Two House Republicans Will Face Off for California Seat

June 10, 2026 at 10:58 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

NOTUS: “California voters passed a redistricting ballot measure last year that altered the lines of California’s 40th Congressional District. That change forced two Republican House members into a primary race for the redrawn seat, and those two incumbents will now move on to November’s general election, according to Associated Press projections.”

“Rep. Ken Calvert and Rep. Young Kim advanced in the nonpartisan primary, topping six other Democratic or politically unaffiliated candidates to square off for a seat Cook Political Report categorizes as solidly Republican.”
