American Democracy May Be Dying

April 10, 2020 at 8:52 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Paul Krugman: “Yet the scariest news of the past week didn’t involve either epidemiology or economics; it was the travesty of an election in Wisconsin, where the Supreme Court required that in-person voting proceed despite the health risks and the fact that many who requested absentee ballots never got them.”

“Why was this so scary? Because it shows that America as we know it may not survive much longer. The pandemic will eventually end; the economy will eventually recover. But democracy, once lost, may never come back. And we’re much closer to losing our democracy than many people realize.”

MGM Ordered to Deliver Unaired ‘Apprentice’ Footage

April 10, 2020 at 8:05 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Hollywood Reporter: “Journalists, litigants and even actor Tom Arnold for years have been trying to get their hands on unaired footage from The Celebrity Apprentice that allegedly incriminates Donald Trump — and on Thursday a New York federal judge ordered MGM to hand over tapes in a lawsuit over an alleged multilevel marketing scam. Whether they’re those tapes remains to be seen.”

Bloomberg: “It would be the first time outsiders would get a chance to view at least some parts of the reality TV show that weren’t publicly broadcast.”

Views on Trump’s Handling of Crisis Slip Again

April 10, 2020 at 7:55 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new CBS News poll finds views on President Trump’s handling of the outbreak response have ticked down for the second consecutive week. The president is seen doing a good job by 47%, down four points from 51% last week and 53% the prior week.

Now is the first time more say he’s doing a bad job than a good one.

New York Times: “Polls suggest that faith in the president to handle the outbreak has slipped among some crucial voting blocs in the general election.”

Newsom Declares California a “Nation State’

April 10, 2020 at 7:47 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) told MSNBC that he would use the bulk purchasing power of California “as a nation-state” to acquire the hospital supplies that the federal government has failed to provide.

If all goes according to plan, Newsom said, California might even “export some of those supplies to states in need.”

Francis Wilkinson: “Newsom is accomplishing a few things here, with what can only be a deliberate lack of subtlety.”

New York Has More Coronavirus Cases Than Any Country

April 10, 2020 at 7:39 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Images have emerged of coffins being buried in a mass grave in New York City, as the death toll from the coronavirus outbreak continues to rise,” the BBC reports.

“The location is Hart Island, used for New Yorkers with no next of kin or who could not afford a funeral.”

“New York state now has more coronavirus cases than any single country, according to latest figures.”

100,000 Deaths

April 10, 2020 at 7:28 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Reuters: “In all likelihood the COVID-19 illness associated with the new coronavirus will claim its 100,000th death during the next 24 hours. From the report of the first fatality in early January, it took a month to record 1,000 deaths and a further month to hit 10,000. That was just three weeks ago.”

“The death toll now compares with that of London’s Great Plague in the mid-1660s, which killed an estimated 100,000 people, about a third of the city’s population at the time.”

New York Times: “The virus has yet to reveal many of its insidious mysteries, but new data and a growing body of research have shown that it preys on the human propensity to connect.”

Steyer Endorses Biden for President

April 10, 2020 at 6:40 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Tom Steyer told Politico that he plans to use his resources to get Joe Biden elected, joining almost every candidate who dropped from the Democratic primary race in endorsing the former vice president.

Barack Obama Won the Democratic Primary

April 10, 2020 at 6:35 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Ryan Lizza: “In the end, the most influential politician of 2020 may be the one who has been the most silent. With Bernie Sanders exiting the race and Joe Biden taking on the mantle of presumptive nominee, the man who hovered quietly over the race for more than a year, Barack Obama, will soon return to the political fray.”

“Obama wanted Sanders to have the day to himself and so he refrained from speaking (or tweeting) publicly on Wednesday. But Obama had always said his role in the primaries would be to unite the party when it’s over, and he’s been in close contact with both campaigns as the pandemic both froze the race without a clear victor and also made it more obvious that Biden would eventually prevail.”

Mail-In Voting Does Not Favor Democrats

April 10, 2020 at 6:33 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: : “As with false claims by Republicans about vote-by-mail fraud, there is no evidence to back up the argument from the right that all-mail elections favor Democrats. But Mr. Trump and some of his allies are warning that vote-by-mail poses an existential threat to their party, in hopes of galvanizing Republican opposition to a voting method that is widely seen as safer than in-person voting in the era of the coronavirus.”

“Five states — Colorado, Hawaii, Oregon, Utah and Washington — now have all-mail elections, in which ballots are sent to every registered voter without their having to request one. Others, like Arizona and California, allow voters to add themselves to a permanent list of mail voters.”

“And there are also cases like Nebraska, which allows counties of less than 10,000 people to mail ballots to all voters (many of them Republicans) but forbids it in large urban areas (where many voters are Democrats). Texas allows no-excuse absentee voting for people 65 or older, another group that skews Republican. None of these states have seen an appreciable shift favoring Democrats that officials and experts attribute to mail voting.”

CBS News: Offciials sound alarm about November elections.

Another GOP-Led State Backs Mail-In Voting

April 10, 2020 at 6:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu (R) announced Thursday that the state will allow voters to cast mail-in ballots in the November general election if the coronavirus is still a factor this fall,” the Washington Post reports.

“The decision is a significant departure from Sununu’s past stance against widespread absentee voting and stands in contrast to the rhetoric coming from some Republicans, including President Trump.”

‘The Woman In Michigan’

April 10, 2020 at 6:25 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Tim Alberta: “To the untrained eye, Gretchen Esther Whitmer might seem like a pushover. With the suburban-mom hairstyle, the high-pitched giggle, the nasally accent straight out of ‘Fargo’ central casting, she looks like the type of person—OK, the type of woman—that Donald Trump would chew up and spit out.”

“But looks can be deceiving, especially when they are strategically deployed to deceive. Reared in the cradle of Michigan’s back-slapping establishment, Whitmer is the quintessential insider, one-part policy aficionado and one-part student of the game. She’s an old-style pol, known as much for impassioned partisan crusades as for her conciliatory three-beer summits. In Lansing, you cannot find anyone, Republican or Democrat, on the record or off, who does not admire the skills of the state’s 49th governor. Moreover, just about everyone likes her. She is genuine, secure, quick to give a hug or share a dirty joke. She is a mom, a sports nut, a lawyer, a politician with a perfect record of winning races and a long history of flustering opponents.”

RNC Praises Trump’s Handling of Virus

April 10, 2020 at 6:21 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “The RNC is launching a seven-figure advertising campaign lavishing praise on President Donald Trump for his handling of the coronavirus outbreak, as the president confronts a sustained assault from liberal groups over his response to the crisis.”

“The $1 million-plus digital blitz, which will run across more than a dozen battleground states, is unusual: The committee rarely spends so heavily on advertising so early in an election year. But over the last several weeks, an array of liberal groups has spent millions of dollars on commercials battering Trump. On Thursday, Pacronym, a liberal super PAC, began running a web video hammering the president for initially downplaying the virus.”

Pelosi Warns Trump Not to Reopen Country Too Soon

April 9, 2020 at 10:57 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Speaker Nancy Pelosi signaled that the House is unlikely to return to session later this month, her clearest indication yet that Congress — like the rest of the country — could remain shuttered for weeks or even longer as the coronavirus crisis continues, Politico reports.

Pelosi also “issued a stark warning to President Trump, urging him not to prematurely rush to reopen major segments of the country before the coronavirus is under control.”

DeSantis Thinks Virus Doesn’t Impact Young People

April 9, 2020 at 10:07 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) falsely claimed that the novel coronavirus hasn’t killed anyone under 25 nationwide while discussing a timeline for reopening schools in the state, CNN reports.

Said DeSantis: “This particular pandemic is one where, I don’t think nationwide there’s been a single fatality under 25. For whatever reason it just doesn’t seem to threaten, you know, kids.”

He added: “And we lose in Florida between five and 10 kids a year for the flu. This one, for whatever reason, much more dangerous if you’re 65 and plus than the flu, no doubt about that, if you’re younger it just hasn’t had an impact. So that should factor into how we’re viewing this.”

Trump Wants to Reopen Country Within 3 Weeks

April 9, 2020 at 8:49 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Trump administration is pushing to reopen much of the country next month, raising concerns among medical experts and economists of a possible covid-19 resurgence if Americans return to their normal lives before the virus is truly stamped out.” the Washington Post reports.

“Behind closed doors, President Trump — concerned with the sagging economy — has sought a strategy for resuming business activity by May 1.”

“In phone calls with outside advisers, Trump has even floated trying to reopen much of the country before the end of this month, when the current federal recommendations to avoid social gatherings and work from home expire.”

Trump Allies Think Daily Briefings Are Hurting Him

April 9, 2020 at 8:42 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “As unemployment soars and the death toll skyrockets, and new polls show support for the president’s handling of the crisis sagging, White House allies and Republican lawmakers increasingly believe the briefings are hurting the president more than helping him. Many view the sessions as a kind of original sin from which all of his missteps flow, once he gets through his prepared script and turns to his preferred style of extemporaneous bluster and invective.”

“With only intermittent attempts to adapt to a moment of crisis, Mr. Trump is effectively wagering that he can win re-election in the midst of a national emergency on a platform of polarization.”

“In interviews, Republican lawmakers, administration officials and members of his re-election campaign said they wanted Mr. Trump to limit his error-filled appearances at the West Wing briefings and move more aggressively to prepare for the looming recession. Some even suggested he summon a broader range of the country’s leaders, including former Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama, in an all-hands-on-deck moment to respond to the national emergency.”

Another Lawmaker Tests Positive

Rep. Neal Dunn (R-FL) has tested positive for coronavirus, WTXL reports.

Kudlow Says Economy will Restart on ‘Rolling Basis’

April 9, 2020 at 5:05 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow told Fox News the U.S. economy should be able to reopen “on a rolling basis” over the next month or two.

Said Kudlow: “The next month or two, we should be able to restart at least on a rolling basis. Our intent here was, is to try to relieve people of the enormous difficult hardships they are suffering through no fault of their own.”
