Trump’s Personality Flaws Put Americans at Risk

March 27, 2020 at 10:10 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

David Corn: “For a narcissist, the most immediate personal need is the most important one. So Trump viewed the burgeoning crisis as a threat to him, not the nation, and he took the steps he usually does in so many circumstances: He denied the threat, claimed he knew better than the experts, and relied on bluster and BS. He did all that instead of adopting early measures that could have slowed the transmission of the virus.”

“But beyond the narcissism, two other fundamental elements of Trump’s character are likely shaping his response: his obsession with revenge and his sense of fatalism. And both are exceedingly dangerous for the American public.”

Young Admits He Was Wrong on the ‘Beer Virus’

March 27, 2020 at 9:31 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Don Young (R-AK), who on March 13 told a group of seniors that fears of the “beer virus” have been overblown by the media, on Thursday delivered a very different message, the Anchorage Daily News reports.

Said Young: “Weeks ago I did not fully grasp the severity of this crisis, but clearly, we are in the midst of an urgent public health emergency… This pandemic is dangerous and is especially threatening our senior citizens, of which I am one.”

Gantz Reverses and Will Serve Under Netanyahu

March 27, 2020 at 9:27 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel was set to hold onto power after his chief rival, Benny Gantz, reversed himself Thursday and signaled that he would be open to serving in a Netanyahu-led government,” the New York Times reports.

“Gantz, a former Israeli army chief who had vowed to bring Mr. Netanyahu’s long rule to an end and fought him to a draw in three elections, said he was changing course to help bring the country together to fight the coronavirus pandemic.”

Said Gantz: “These are unusual times and they call for unusual decisions. This is not the time for infighting and mudslinging. This is not the time for controversy and divisions. This is the time for responsible, committed, patriotic leadership. Let’s join hands and get Israel out of this crisis.”

Fitch Warns on Credit Rating of the U.S.

March 27, 2020 at 9:23 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Fitch: “Fitch considers U.S. debt tolerance to be higher than that of other ‘AAA’ sovereigns. However, high fiscal deficits and debt — which were already rising even before the onset of the huge economic shock precipitated by the coronavirus — are starting to erode these credit strengths.”

“The risk of a near-term negative rating action has risen given the magnitude of the shock to the economy and public finances from the coronavirus and the commensurate and necessary fiscal policy response, particularly in the absence of a credible consolidation plan for the country’s pre-existing, longer-term public finance and government debt challenges.”

Stacks of Urns in Wuhan Prompt Questions of Virus’s Toll

March 27, 2020 at 9:17 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Bloomberg: “The long lines and stacks of ash urns greeting family members of the dead at funeral homes in Wuhan are spurring questions about the true scale of coronavirus casualties at the epicenter of the outbreak, renewing pressure on a Chinese government struggling to control its containment narrative.”

“The families of those who succumbed to the virus in the central Chinese city, where the disease first emerged in December, were allowed to pick up their cremated ashes at eight local funeral homes starting this week. As they did, photos circulated on Chinese social media of thousands of urns being ferried in.”

Most Think Trump Should Have Responded Sooner

March 27, 2020 at 9:07 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Like other recent surveys, a new Fox News poll finds President Trump’s approval rating ticking up to 48% to 51%.

However, here’s a hint at whether voters will blame Trump for the disruption caused by the coronavirus pandemic:  “By a 53% to 34% margin, more believe a quicker response from the federal government could have slowed the spread of coronavirus in the U.S. than say it is so contagious that nothing could have prevented it spreading the way it has.  Some 30% of Republicans join 73% of Democrats in saying the government could have made a difference had it acted faster.”

Advisers Steer Trump Away from Easter Deadline

March 27, 2020 at 8:31 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Believing the worst is yet to come, some top advisers to President Trump are struggling to steer him away from Easter as an arbitrary deadline for much of the nation to reopen,” Axios reports.

“But Trump is far from chastened.”

Said a top official: “I don’t think he feels in any way that his messaging was off. He feels more convinced than ever that America needs to get back to work.”

Maybe It’s Just Incompetence

March 27, 2020 at 8:26 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jonathan Bernstein is puzzled by the White House suddenly calling off a venture to produce as many as 80,000 ventilators and President Trump’s comments last night questioning the need for so many.

“Look: I’ve tried to be slow to criticize the substance of the administration’s reaction to the unfolding disaster. I’ve pointed out more than once that these situations are difficult, that experts themselves often disagree on the correct steps to take, and that perfection is an unfair standard by which to judge any president. I could add that while the U.S. has been hard hit, it’s far from the only nation where the coronavirus has spread. I’ve been tough on Trump mainly for his crisis communications, which are easier to judge on face value than something like getting tests into the field, and on the bureaucratic structure of his response.”

“But every time he does something like this, it lends support to the idea that he and his closest aides are butchering the response out of sheer incompetence, even as the few qualified experts involved are desperately trying to drag them back on course.”

Sanders Concedes It Will Be Tough to Beat Biden

March 27, 2020 at 7:48 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Bernie Sanders acknowledged that “it’s going to be a very steep road” to defeat former Vice President Joe Biden in the 2020 Democratic primary, discussing in frank terms the challenges facing his already lagging campaign amid the coronavirus pandemic, Politico reports.

Said Sanders: “We are assessing the situation we’re in. It’s changing every day because elections are being delayed. We don’t hold rallies, obviously. We don’t do door-to-door campaigning, which hundreds of thousands of volunteers had been doing. We’re doing a virtual campaign, if you like. But right now, we’re focusing on the health care and economic crisis facing the country.”

Boris Johnson Tests Positive

March 27, 2020 at 7:31 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

British Prime Minister Johnson has tested positive for coronavirus, the BBC reports.

“His symptoms are mild and he will continue to lead the government response to the virus while he self-isolates, a spokesman says.”

Trump’s Approval Jumps Five Points

March 27, 2020 at 7:15 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Washington Post-ABC News poll finds President Trump’s approval rate at 48%, even as most Americans say he was too slow to take action in the early days of the virus’s spread.

The rise in Trump’s approval rating, however, is far smaller than some other presidents have experienced in times of national crisis.

New York Times: Can Trump break a 50% approval rating?

Brazil’s Governors Rise Up Against Bolsonaro

March 27, 2020 at 7:12 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Associated Press: “Brazil’s governors are defying President Jair Bolsonaro over his call to reopen schools and businesses, dismissing his argument that the “cure” of widespread shutdowns to contain the spread of the new coronavirus is worse than the disease.”

What Team Biden Is Doing

March 27, 2020 at 7:09 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Ryan Liza: “The Biden campaign has been studying the ’18 midterms. No, not the ones two years ago when Democrats took over the House by aggressively recruiting moderates and sweeping swing districts across the country, a precursor to Biden’s own centrist strategy in the Democratic presidential primaries this year.”

“They’ve been studying the midterms of 1918, the year of the Spanish flu pandemic when large gatherings were banned in many places and candidates were forced to invent new ways to communicate with voters and run their campaigns. Turnout plummeted that year to 40%, from 50% in the 1914 midterms.”

When Can Lockdowns End?

March 27, 2020 at 7:05 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Associated Press: “Scientists are reluctant to predict exactly when restrictions could be safely loosened, but based on what they’ve observed in China — the first country struck by the new virus — some relief could come approximately six to eight weeks after lockdowns are implemented. That is based on the assumption that cases could peak two or three weeks after lockdowns begin, and gradually decline for the next two or three weeks.”

“While we may yearn for a clear timeline for when life will return to normal, scientists say that isn’t exactly the right question. Routines won’t resume exactly as they were for several months, or longer – but that doesn’t mean we’ll all be stuck in total lockdowns until then.”

Trump Questions Need for So Many Ventilators

March 26, 2020 at 11:12 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Speaking with Sean Hannity on Fox News, President Trump again minimized the impact of the global coronavirus pandemic, casting doubt on the need for tens of thousands of ventilators for hospitals responding to the crisis, Politico reports.

Said Trump: “I have a feeling that a lot of the numbers that are being said in some areas are just bigger than they’re going to be. I don’t believe you need 40,000 or 30,000 ventilators. You go into major hospitals sometimes, and they’ll have two ventilators. And now all of a sudden they’re saying, ‘Can we order 30,000 ventilators?’”

Trump Says ‘No Way’ He’ll Cancel Convention

March 26, 2020 at 11:09 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump said there is “no way” he’ll cancel the GOP convention in August, despite the uncertainty surrounding planned events due to the coronavirus pandemic, The Hill reports.

Said Trump: “We are definitely planning — it’s toward the end of August. Somebody was asking today, ‘Will you cancel your convention?’ I said no way I’m going to cancel the convention. We’re going to have the convention, it’s going to be incredible.”

Lawmakers Scramble to Return to Washington

March 26, 2020 at 11:08 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Many House members are scrambling to book flights and return to Washington amid concerns that they could be requested to show up in person and vote on the stimulus,” CNN reports.

“The fear is that one member could prevent the House from approving the $2 trillion bill by voice vote, forcing them instead to cast a roll-call vote in person. That has angered many members worried about traveling during the public health emergency.”

White House Backs Off Ventilator Announcement

March 26, 2020 at 9:18 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The White House had been preparing on Wednesday to announce amid an escalating pandemic that a joint venture between General Motors and Ventec Life Systems would begin producing as many as 80,000 desperately needed ventilators when word suddenly came down that the announcement was off,” the New York Times reports.

“The decision to cancel the announcement, according to government officials, came after the Federal Emergency Management Agency said it needed more time to assess whether the estimated cost was prohibitive — more than $1 billion.”
