Fed Unveils Massive Emergency Program

April 9, 2020 at 10:21 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Federal Reserve on Thursday unveiled emergency programs that could dole out more than $2 trillion in loans to businesses of all sizes, as well as to struggling state and city governments, in a bid to keep the economy afloat as it is ravaged by the coronavirus pandemic,” Politico reports.

“The scope and scale of the programs underscore how serious a threat the virus poses to an economy where millions of jobs have been shed in recent weeks as businesses have shuttered across the U.S.”

CNBC has more details on the program.

Barr Slams Russia Investigation

April 9, 2020 at 9:51 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Attorney General William Barr let loose on the Russia investigation in a Fox News interview, calling it “one of the greatest travesties in American history.”

Said Barr: “Without any basis, they started this investigation of his campaign, and even more concerning actually is what happened after the campaign — a whole pattern of events while he was president … to sabotage the presidency — or at least have the effect of sabotaging the presidency.”

California’s Next Special Election Is a Toss Up

April 9, 2020 at 8:59 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Larry Sabato’s Crystal Ball finds the May special election in California’s 25th congressional district might provide Republicans with their best opportunity to claw back some of their lost California turf.

The seat once held by Rep. Katie Hill (D-CA) has moved from Leans Democratic to Toss-up.

What You Might Be Missing in the News

Ground News quickly shows you which news stories are drawing attention on one side of the media landscape — and far less on the other.

Here's what Democrats aren’t reading: A BBC investigation found that lawyers in the U.K. are advising migrants to claim persecution based on sexual orientation to strengthen their asylum cases.

Here's what Republicans aren’t reading: Two anonymous donors gave NPR a combined $113 million after federal funding cuts — a major lifeline for public media.

It’s a reminder that the biggest blind spots in political news aren’t always about what’s reported -- but what’s quietly left out. That's why I use Ground News.

Surge In Unemployment Claims Continues

April 9, 2020 at 8:33 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jobless rolls continued to swell due to the coronavirus shutdown, with 6.6 million Americans filing first-time unemployment claims in the week ended April 4, CNBC reports.

Economists surveyed by the Wall Street Journal had expected the number to be around 5 million Americans.

Washington Post: “Last week’s jobless numbers are on top of the nearly 10 million Americans who had already applied for unemployment the two previous weeks.”

Politico: “Economic forecasts are becoming routine that predict unemployment will exceed its historic 25% peak during the Great Depression, and the number of jobs lost in a mere three weeks now exceeds the 15 million that it took 18 months for the Great Recession to bulldoze in 2007-2009.”

Americans Lose Patience with Trump

April 9, 2020 at 8:31 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new SurveyUSA poll finds the number of Americans who strongly disapprove of the way in which President Trump is handling coronavirus crisis has jumped from 25% two weeks ago to 38% today.

In addition, Trump’s net approval for handling the crisis has fallen 13 points over this time period.

Also striking: 48% today say they have no confidence in President Trump’s ability to lead the nation through these trying times, while 43% say they do have confidence. This is another 14-point turn for the worse from 2 weeks ago, when 50% had confidence and 41% did not.

Biden Courts Sanders’ Endorsement

April 9, 2020 at 8:24 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Joe Biden isn’t about to become Bernie Sanders, but he’s signaling that there’s potential for more common ground on issues such as health care, student debt, climate change and more in the weeks ahead,” Axios reports.

“As Biden courts Sanders’ endorsement, their teams will hold policy discussions in the next few weeks with the expectation that Biden will incorporate some elements of Sanders’ agenda.”

When Trump Goes After Hunter Biden

April 9, 2020 at 8:21 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rick Wilson: “Donald Trump and his allies bet the Ukrainian farm on turning Hunter Biden into a radioactive campaign issue, and even though it failed, that’s no reason they won’t bring it up again. And again. And again. Shamelessly and brutally and falsely.”

“The trick here isn’t to launch into an endless defense of Hunter. The trick is to go on the attack, and go hard. Go after Ivanka’s China copyright deals. Daddy’s little angel is a sociopathic chip off the Trumpian block, and his weird feelings towards her (‘So that’s how it is in that family’) will lead to his over-reaction.”

“Go after the failsons and sons-in-law, starting with Jared’s Persian Gulf bailout. Don’t spare Donald Trump Jr. These scuzzy griftbots are raking in money off the campaign hand over fist, and no one is holding them accountable. They’re using the hotels to launder lobbyist money back into Trump’s pockets. There’s enough oppo here for a hundred campaigns.”

“Biden just needs to be bold enough to use it, and strong enough to resist the initial fainting-couch faux outrage when he gives back as good as he got.”

It Could Be a Very Long Tunnel

April 9, 2020 at 8:11 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “The world began this week to see small but encouraging signs that concerted efforts to drastically change human behavior — to suspend daily routines by staying at home — are slowing the insidious spread of the novel coronavirus, which has killed tens of thousands and sickened more than a million others across several continents.”

“But — a simple word that epidemiologists say cannot be emphasized enough — these early indications, while promising, must not be interpreted to mean that all will be well by summer’s first days. Although President Trump tweeted on Monday about a light at the end of a tunnel, the cautions of scientists and other government officials conjure one very, very long tunnel.”

Two Things Will Determine Bernie’s Legacy

April 9, 2020 at 6:54 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

John Harris: “The first factor is how effectively Sanders navigates the complexities of 2020 politics. In a grudging mood, Sanders could signal to his supporters that former vice president Joseph Biden isn’t that bad, compared to the alternative in Donald Trump. It would be quite a different thing to argue that a Biden presidency would be affirmatively good—a step, even if more tentative than Sanders would wish, toward advancing a transformative progressive agenda.”

“Sanders’ long-term reputation, however, will hinge even more on something he can’t dictate: What happens to the young activists who he energized with his cranky manner and democratic socialist agenda? George McGovern, another movement politician, was routed in his effort to become president in 1972 but people immersed in that campaign—from Gary Hart to Bill and Hillary Clinton—were dominant figures in American politics for the next 45 years.”

Trump Has Two Distinct Strategies Against Biden

April 9, 2020 at 6:52 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “As an opening salvo for what is certain to be a historically fierce general election campaign, the Trump tactics offered a window into the race ahead, pitting a conventional Democratic campaign against a Republican incumbent still striving to scramble political categories…”

“One is a competition for the ideological center of the country, run through the tony, tax-skeptical suburbs of key swing states that rejected the GOP in 2018. The second is a fight for the mostly working-class populism of the left, which has rejected the establishment politics of both national parties.”

Trump Cycles Through Targets to Blame

April 9, 2020 at 6:38 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“First, it was the media that was at fault. Then, Democratic governors came under fire. China, President Barack Obama and federal watchdogs have all had a turn in the crosshairs. And now it’s the World Health Organization that’s to blame,” the AP reports

“President Trump is falling back on a familiar political strategy as he grapples with the coronavirus pandemic: deflect, deny and direct blame elsewhere.”

“As he tries to distance his White House from the mounting death toll, Trump has cycled through a long list of possible scapegoats in an attempt to distract from what critics say were his own administration’s missteps in slowing the spread of the coronavirus on American shores.”

Wall Street Journal editorial: “The President’s outbursts against his political critics are also notably off key at this moment. This isn’t impeachment, and Covid-19 isn’t shifty Schiff. It’s a once-a-century threat to American life and livelihood.”

Relief Bill Allows Fed to Not Keep Records

April 9, 2020 at 6:34 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Tucked into the recent recovery bill was a provision granting the Federal Reserve the right to set up a $450 billion bailout plan without following key provisions of the federal open meetings law, including announcing its meetings or keeping most records about them,” Politico reports.

“The provision, the existence of which has not been previously reported, further calls into question the transparency and oversight for the biggest bailout law ever passed by Congress. President Trump has indicated he does not plan to comply with another part of the new law intended to boost Congress’ oversight powers of the bailout funds…”

“The changes at the central bank – which appear to have been inserted into the 880-page bill by sympathetic senators during the scramble to get it approved — would address a complaint that the Fed faced during the 2008 financial crisis, when board members couldn’t easily hold group conversations to address the fast-moving economic turmoil.”

Trump to Unveil Second Coronavirus Task Force

April 8, 2020 at 11:22 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump is preparing to announce as soon as this week a second, smaller coronavirus task force aimed specifically at combating the economic ramifications of the virus and focused on reopening the nation’s economy,” the Washington Post reports.

“The task force will be made up of a mix of private-sector and top administration officials, including chief of staff Mark Meadows — whose first official day on the job was last week — Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and national economic adviser Larry Kudlow.”

Falwell Says Arrest Warrants Out for Two Journalists

April 8, 2020 at 10:20 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jerry Falwell Jr., the president of Liberty University, said on Wednesday that arrest warrants had been issued for journalists from The New York Times and ProPublica after both outlets published articles critical of his decision to partially reopen Liberty’s campus amid the coronavirus pandemic, Politico reports.

Photocopies of the arrest warrants charge that two reporters committed misdemeanor trespassing on the college campus while working on their articles.

Coronavirus In New York Came from Europe

April 8, 2020 at 10:16 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“New research indicates that the coronavirus began to circulate in the New York area by mid-February, weeks before the first confirmed case, and that it was brought to the region mainly by travelers from Europe, not Asia,” the New York Times reports.

“A separate team at N.Y.U. Grossman School of Medicine came to strikingly similar conclusions, despite studying a different group of cases. Both teams analyzed genomes from coronaviruses taken from New Yorkers starting in mid-March.”

Oversight Sputters As Trump Starts Doling Out Billions

April 8, 2020 at 9:24 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Congress assured America that its frenzied rush to deliver $2 trillion in coronavirus relief wouldn’t lead to waste, fraud or abuse because they packed the sprawling law with powerful safeguards,” Politico reports.

“Yet, as the Trump administration begins pumping billions of taxpayer dollars into the economy, none of the built-in oversight mechanisms are even close to functional. And their absence will soon be glaringly obvious as the gusher of cash and extraordinary new power granted to the administration fuels massive logjams, headaches and fear across overburdened hospitals, overcrowded unemployment offices and many sectors of the ailing economy.”

Extra Bonus Quote of the Day

April 8, 2020 at 8:57 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“I don’t think we should ever shake hands ever again, to be honest with you. Not only would it be good to prevent coronavirus disease, it probably would decrease instances of influenza dramatically in this country.”

— Dr. Anthony Fauci, in a Wall Street Journal interview.

Trump’s Approval Bounce Is Gone

April 8, 2020 at 8:02 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “Even as the country confronts the greatest disruption to daily life since World War II, a series of new polls released this week show Trump’s approval ratings plateauing in the mid-40s, roughly where his approval rating stood a month ago, before the coronavirus shuttered much of the nation’s economic and social activity.”

“In other words, public views of Trump’s leadership in the coronavirus crisis are now breaking down along familiar lines of polarization: Americans view his performance during the pandemic about the same way they view his performance generally.”
