The Supreme Court’s Green Light to Gerrymandering

June 28, 2019 at 5:50 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rick Hasen: “The Supreme Court decision on Thursday in Rucho v. Common Cause purports to take federal courts out of the business of policingpartisan gerrymanders and leave the issue for states to handle.”

“But the decision will instead push federal courts further into the political thicket, and, in states with substantial minority voter populations, force courts to make logically impossible determinations about whether racial reasons or partisan motives predominate when a party gerrymanders for political advantage. It didn’t have to be this way.”

My Reaction to Tonight’s Democratic Debate

June 27, 2019 at 10:58 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

This piece is only available to Political Wire members.

Only Kamala Harris and Pete Buttigieg improved their position in the Democratic presidential race tonight. Both were prepared and very clear in explaining why they were running and what they would do as president. But most important for Democrats, both play to win. They would be formidable competitors to Donald Trump.

Leave your reactions in the comments.

White House Mulls Capital Gains Tax Break

June 27, 2019 at 3:35 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The White House is developing a plan to cut taxes by indexing capital gains to inflation, in a move that would largely benefit the wealthy and may be done in a way that bypasses Congress,” Bloomberg reports.

“Consensus is growing among White House officials to advance the proposal soon, to ensure the benefit takes effect before President Trump faces re-election in 2020.”

House Democrats Cave on Border Emergency Bill

June 27, 2019 at 3:25 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“House Democrats will vote Thursday on a clean Senate-passed bill to address the border crisis, marking a blow to Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and liberal members who had demanded additional protections for migrant children,” The Hill reports.

“Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX), a border lawmaker, announced the plan as he emerged from an emergency meeting in Pelosi’s office. And other lawmakers said Democratic leaders are already whipping the $4.6 billion Senate proposal.”

As Bad as Citizens United

June 27, 2019 at 3:12 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former Reps. Steve Israel (D-NY) and Zach Wamp (R-TN) write in The Atlantic:

“Today’s Supreme Court ruling that the Constitution doesn’t bar even extreme partisan gerrymandering is the worst election-related decision since Citizens United, which in 2010 opened the floodgates for corporate money in campaigns. The Court just stacked the deck in favor of parties over voters—and laid the groundwork for yet more polarization.”

15 Million Watched the Democratic Debate

June 27, 2019 at 3:08 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“More than 15 million viewers tuned in for part one of the 2020 presidential election’s first primary debate on television Wednesday night,” CNN reports.

“The Nielsen ratings reflect enormous interest in the presidential race — with millions of people tuning into NBC, MSNBC and Telemundo to size up the candidates who want to beat President Trump next year.”

“And these ratings don’t even include streaming viewership on YouTube, Twitter and other sites.”

Trump Asks If Census Can Be Delayed

June 27, 2019 at 2:01 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump said Thursday that he is seeking to delay the constitutionally mandated census to give administration officials more time to come up with a better explanation for why it should include a citizenship question,” the Washington Post reports.

“Trump’s announcement, in a tweet sent from Japan, came hours after the Supreme Court put on hold his administration’s plan to add a citizenship question to the 2020 Census, saying it had provided a ‘contrived’ reason for wanting the information.”

Ocasio-Cortez Plays the Inside Game

June 27, 2019 at 1:49 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “Ocasio-Cortez this week met with Speaker Nancy Pelosi to reshape a contentious spending package for the southern border. And while the New York Democrat ultimately opposed the bill on the floor Tuesday, she declined to mobilize her army of social media followers against it or rile up the progressive base in a bid to tank it.”

“The latest episode over the border bill underscores Ocasio-Cortez’s approach to Congress six months into her hotly anticipated turn in Washington. The progressive star has indeed begun to exert power — but subtly and not the way most people expected. Despite many predictions to the contrary, she hasn’t opted to torment leadership as the conservative Freedom Caucus once did to GOP leaders. Instead, she’s working with party elders.”

The Republican Time Machine Could Re-Elect Trump

June 27, 2019 at 1:17 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Robert Jones: “Amid all the ongoing changes in the country that generally favor Democrats, is it still possible that President Donald Trump will be reelected in 2020? Because I study religious and demographic change, I hear this question a lot. Much of the early punditry on Trump’s reelection prospects has focused on complex Electoral College scenarios—insights that, while valuable, shed little light on the bigger picture.”

“I’ve come to answer the question this way: Yes, it is possible Trump gets reelected. While Democrats have the long-term demographic winds at their back, Republicans have a time machine: a consistent skew in ethnic and religious voter-turnout patterns that, in national elections, has the effect of turning back the demographic clock eight or more years.”

Kushner Kept Talks from Tillerson

June 27, 2019 at 1:12 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“In newly disclosed testimony, former secretary of state Rex Tillerson said President Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner operated independently with powerful leaders around the world without coordination with the State Department, leaving Tillerson out of the loop and in the dark on emerging U.S. policies and simmering geopolitical crises,” the Washington Post reports.

“Tillerson also described the challenge of briefing a president who does not read briefing papers and often got distracted by peripheral topics, noting he had to keep his message short and focus on a single topic.”

Dalai Lama Says Trump Lacks Moral Principle

June 27, 2019 at 12:56 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Dalai Lama to the BBC: “His emotions are also a little bit,” he said, making a gesture waggling his finger near his temple.

He added: “One day he says something, another day he says something. But I think there is a lack of moral principle. When he became president, he expressed America first. That is wrong. America, they should take the global responsibility.”

How Trump Can Resurrect the Census Question

June 27, 2019 at 12:49 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rick Hasen: “Despite a favorable ruling for opponents of the census citizenship question on Thursday, the Supreme Court did not definitively decide to exclude citizenship question from the 2020 census.”

“Indeed, I expect that the Trump administration’s Commerce Department and Department of Justice could well be back before the Supreme Court’s next term begins in October arguing for the question’s inclusion, and they could well win and include the question.”

‘I Was Wrong About Elizabeth Warren’

June 27, 2019 at 12:31 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Nicholas Kristof: “As the Democratic presidential campaign began, I was deeply skeptical of Elizabeth Warren. My first objection was that she appeared to have parlayed possible Native American heritage to gain academic jobs … That offended me, and I knew it would repel huge numbers of voters. Second, I thought she shot from the hip and, with her slight political experience, would wilt on the campaign trail. Third, I thought she was a one-note Sally, eloquent on finance but thin on the rest of domestic and foreign policy.”

“So much for my judgment: I now believe I was wrong on each count, and her rise in the polls suggests that others are also seeing more in her.”

Twitter Will Label Political Tweets That Break Rules

June 27, 2019 at 12:25 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Twitter has long said it is unlikely to take down politicians’ most vitriolic tweets — including President Trump’s — but it now plans to label them if they break its rules,” the Washington Post reports.

“The new label applies to all verified political candidates and government officials with more than 100,000 followers… Before users can view the language in newly flagged tweets, they will need to click on a screen that says, ‘The Twitter Rules about abusive behavior apply to this Tweet. However, Twitter has determined it may be in the public’s interest for the Tweet to remain available.'”

Fact Checking the Democratic Debate

June 27, 2019 at 12:02 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “Only a handful of the stats were stretched past the breaking point. Instead, most ranged from mostly or partly true.”

Cargo of Cocaine Found on Brazilian President’s Plane

June 27, 2019 at 11:29 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “President Jair Bolsonaro of Brazil has vowed to pursue drug traffickers relentlessly. So he was hard-pressed to explain how a presidential plane ended up carrying 86 pounds of cocaine across the Atlantic during an official trip.”

Justices Block Citizenship Question from Census

June 27, 2019 at 10:41 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Supreme Court ruled in a complicated opinion against the Trump administration’s attempt to add a citizenship question to 2020 U.S. Census.

The court split 5-4, with Chief Justice John Roberts joining the liberal justices in sending the issue back to the Commerce Department.

New York Times: “The practical impact of the decision was not immediately clear. While the question is barred for now, it is at least possible that the administration will be able to offer adequate justifications for it. But time is short, as the census forms must be printed shortly.”
