“A White House lawyer and former counsel to the House Intelligence Committee under Devin Nunes has been named senior director for intelligence on the National Security Council, the latest instance of President Trump elevating a trusted loyalist to control the intelligence community,” Politico reports.
Fed Cuts Interest Rates by Half Percentage Point
“The Federal Reserve cut its benchmark rate by a half percentage point on Tuesday morning, delivering a booster shot to stem potential economic disruptions from the spreading coronavirus epidemic,” the Wall Street Journal reports.
“Tuesday’s cut, which lowered the federal-funds rate to a range between 1% and 1.25%, is the first to occur in between a scheduled policy meeting since the 2008 financial crisis.”
Tom Cotton Already Headed to New Hampshire
“Sen. Tom Cotton is headed to New Hampshire, the nation’s first primary state, to cultivate support for a potential 2024 president bid, planning to campaign for a Republican Senate candidate and raise money for the party,” the Washington Examiner reports.
Early Signs of a Big Shift Towards Biden
Using recent Data for Progress survey data, Harry Enten has found an average shift in the margin between Bernie Sanders and Joe Biden of 14 percentage points towards Biden since the Nevada caucuses.
Sanders May Have Demographic Edge Today
Ron Brownstein: “The groups that have most favored the senator from Vermont in the Democratic presidential race are much more widely distributed than the groups that have resisted him across the 14 states that will vote on Super Tuesday, an exclusive congressional district by district analysis has found.”
“Latinos and non-college-educated whites, who have tilted solidly toward Sanders, constitute a critical mass of the eligible voting age population in a much wider range of districts than, college-educated whites and African Americans, who have been more skeptical of him.”
Did Pence Come In Contact with Infected Cadet?
Vice President Mike Pence shook hands last Friday with cadets at the Sarasota Military Academy, where one of the cadets is now under quarantine over coronavirus, the Sarasota Herald Tribune reports.
Quote of the Day
“You should never destroy your own credibility. And you don’t want to go to war with a president.”
— Infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci, quoted by Politico, on walking “the fine balance of making sure you continue to tell the truth.”
Super Tuesday Is Just the Beginning of Busy Month
Playbook: “This primary is going to go clear through the month of March. It will take time for California to post full results, and the next two Tuesdays have critical primaries for both candidates. March 10 has Michigan, where Sanders is hoping to do well, and Mississippi and Missouri, where Biden thinks he has a good chance.”
“Arizona — where Sanders heads Thursday — votes March 17, as does Florida. There, the central question will be: When does Mike Bloomberg get out, and does he throw his weight behind Biden? Bloomberg has about 25% of the vote in Florida, and his endorsement could bolster Biden, who leads in some polling we’ve seen.”
“Of course, though, a big night tonight could put Sanders on the precipice of the nomination.”
Key Senator Threatens Subpoena Over Hunter Biden
Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) is threatening to issue a subpoena for records related to former Vice President Joe Biden’s son Hunter and his work for a Ukrainian energy firm — the most significant escalation yet in an investigation that has divided Senate Republicans, Politico reports.
Trump Refocuses on Biden
New York Times: “He gleefully repeated recent misstatements by Mr. Biden, including his confusion over names and states, his statement that he was a candidate for the Senate, his reference to Tuesday’s primaries as ‘Super Thursday’ and his head-spinning comment that 150 million Americans have been killed by guns since 2007.”
Said Trump: “That means 50 percent of our country! That’s a big story!’ ‘Sleepy Joe, he doesn’t even know where he is or what he’s doing or what office he’s running for. Honestly, I don’t think he knows what office he’s running for.”
Trump said if Biden won, his staff would actually do the governing: “They’re going to put him into a home, and other people are going to be running the country,’ the president said, ‘and they’re going to be super-left, radical crazies. And Joe’s going to be in a home and he’ll be watching television.”
Warren’s Path Has Closed
New York Times: “Now, as voters head to the polls on Super Tuesday, Ms. Warren’s campaign has all but admitted her pathway to winning the Democratic nomination outright has vanished. She enters March seeking to accumulate delegates for a potential contested convention and is most realistically hunting for them in more educated enclaves, like Seattle and Denver, where she recently held rallies and is investing heavily in advertising.”
“In many ways, the arc of the Warren candidacy is the story of her cornering an upscale demographic early, only to become confined to it, and then lose her grip on it.”
How the Establishment Stumbled as Sanders Surged
New York Times: “That effort was just one in a series of abandoned or ineffective plans to rally the moderate wing of the Democratic Party, and the leaders and institutions of the political establishment, behind a single formidable contender who could stop the ascent of Mr. Sanders, a democratic socialist promising a revolution in government.”
“A gambit to have the powerful Democratic machine in Nevada back Mr. Biden, for instance, fizzled when the former vice president finished fifth in New Hampshire. Two outside spending groups formed to target Mr. Sanders were unable to inflict damage.”
“Now, on the eve of Super Tuesday, when Democrats across 15 states and territories will hand out more than a third of the delegates required to claim the nomination, Mr. Sanders is within reach of a clear national lead and Mr. Biden is racing to catch up.”

Begala Predicts Trump Will Dump Pence
Paul Begala predicted that President Trump is “gonna dump Mike Pence in favor of former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley” on July 16 when the Democratic nominee is slated to give his or her acceptance speech, The Hill reports.
He said Trump will throw Pence “under the bus” because of his handling of the coronavirus.
Said Begala: “This is not a prediction. It’s a certainty. On Thursday, July 16 — that’s the date the Democrat gives his or her acceptance address — on that day, to interrupt that narrative, Donald Trump will call a press conference at Mar-a-Lago. He’s going to dump Mike Pence and put Nikki Haley on the ticket to try to get those suburban moms.”
Key Republican Will Back Trump’s Pick for Spy Chief
Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC), the Republican chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, told CNN that he will back the nomination of Rep. John Ratcliffe (R-TX) to be the country’s next intelligence chief.
Asked what changed from last year when Ratcliffe was first nominated and GOP senators had concerns then, Burr said: “There was a different pathway in the Senate. I don’t think anybody has changed their opinion of John Ratcliffe. What changed is the pathway to get somebody confirmed. If Democrats want to vote against him and have Richard Grenell stay on as acting is fine with me.”

Chris Matthews Suddenly Resigns
Chris Matthews, the longrunning host of “Hardball” on MSNBC, announced that he is resigning from the program, an abrupt exit prompted by a series of recent gaffes and controversies, the Washington Post reports.
Matthews made the announcement at the start of his weeknight program. His resignation is effectively immediately.
The announcement was a surprise to MSNBC.
Howard Kurtz: “Chris Matthews went to break after 2 minutes, Steve Kornacki came back looking stunned, called Matthews a giant, and went to break again. This hardly looks like MSNBC had planned for his abrupt announcement.“

Said Trump: “I think it’s rigged against Bernie.”
He later tweeted: “They are staging a coup against Bernie!”
