Trump May Name ‘Pardon Czar’
“President Trump’s advisers are considering Alice Marie Johnson, who was serving a life sentence for a drug conviction when the president commuted her sentence during his first term, to be the ‘pardon czar,’” the New York Times reports.
“It was not immediately clear what the role would entail, but Ms. Johnson, at the end of Mr. Trump’s first term, said she wanted to work on behalf of people she believed should be considered for clemency.”
Trump and Musk Set Their Sights on Social Security
“Before President Donald Trump started mass layoffs of federal workers, he demonized them, arguing, despite evidence to the contrary, that most never went into the office,” CNN reports.
“As he moved to cut foreign aid, he and Elon Musk alleged widespread waste and abuse, although they offered little evidence to back up their claims and may simply disagree with how the money was being spent.”
“With that in mind, consider what the Trump administration is now doing to Social Security, seeding the idea, which is not backed up by known facts, that millions of dead people are collecting payments.”

The House GOP Budget Resolution Is In Trouble
“Speaker Mike Johnson is staring down at least a dozen Republican holdouts on the budget blueprint he wants to put on the House floor in the coming days — and he can only afford to lose one member and still approve the resolution along party lines,” Politico reports.
“Johnson and his whip team are using the current week-long recess to ramp up engagement with undecided Republicans, including seven members — if not more — who have raised serious concerns about deep cuts to Medicaid in the House GOP budget resolution. Several other members are wary of a move to raise the debt limit as part of the plan.”

A Head-Spinning Shift in Relations
“The United States and Russia moved toward a head-spinning reset of their relationship on Tuesday, agreeing to work together on ending the Ukraine war, financial investment and re-establishing normal relations,” the New York Times reports.
“The meeting between senior officials from both countries was a striking display of bonhomie after three years of American efforts to isolate Moscow for its 2022 invasion.”
Said Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov: “We weren’t just listening to each other, but we heard each other. I have reason to believe that the American side started to better understand our positions.”

FDA’s Food Safety Chief Quits
Jim Jones, the director of the Food and Drug Administration’s food division, resigned on Monday, citing what he called “indiscriminate” layoffs that would make it “fruitless for him to continue,” the New York Times reports.
Said Jones: “I was looking forward to working to pursue the department’s agenda of improving the health of Americans by reducing diet-related chronic disease and risks from chemicals in food.”
But the Trump administration’s “disdain for the very people” who would do that work gave him no choice but to depart.

Kennedy Jr., in his first address to workers at the Health and Human Services Department, said that a new presidential commission would scrutinize childhood vaccine schedules, psychiatric medications and other frequent targets of his suspicion as part of an effort to fight chronic disease, the New York Times reports.
Said Kennedy: “Nothing is going to be off limits.”
Trump’s Cuts Could Make National Parks Less Safe
“Public lands in the United States have long been considered a national treasure,” the New York Times reports.
“But, since Thursday, at least 3,000 employees have been laid off across the United States Forest Service and the National Park Service, part of a wave of Trump administration cuts to the federal work force. Together, these agencies oversee 278 million acres of land, roughly the size of Texas and Montana combined.”

The Coming Democratic Baby Bust
Kristen Brown: “Donald Trump’s first term saw a great deal of political polarization. Right- and left-leaning Americans disagreed about environmental regulation and immigration. They disagreed about vaccines and reproductive rights. And they disagreed about whether or not to have children: As Republicans started having more babies under Trump, the birth rate among Democrats fell dramatically.”
Probe Into Cuomo’s Book Deal Can Continue
“New York’s top court has upheld the constitutionality of the state’s new ethics commission, delivering a blow to former Gov. Andrew Cuomo as he considers a run for mayor,” Politico reports.
“Cuomo had challenged the commission after it launched a probe of his $5 million deal to write a memoir on Covid. He won in two lower courts.”
“But the Court of Appeals sided with the state in a split 4-3 decision… The decision means COELIG can resume its investigation into Cuomo, just as he puts together the pieces for his likely high-profile New York City mayoral campaign.”
