Schiff Intends to Obliterate Trump’s ‘Red Line’

December 15, 2018 at 12:43 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jeffrey Toobin: “President Trump said some time ago that he believes his personal finances should be off limits to investigators. In an interview with the Times in July, 2017, he asserted that if Robert Mueller, the special counsel, sought to investigate the Trump family’s business dealings he would be crossing a ‘red line.’ When, later that year, several news reports suggested that Mueller had subpoenaed Deutsche Bank for records relating to Trump’s businesses, the President reportedly told members of his staff that he wanted to fire Mueller in response.”

“It was never confirmed whether Mueller had actually subpoenaed Deutsche Bank, but the President’s aversion to the scrutiny of his business interests caught the attention of Representative Adam Schiff, who will become the chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence next year. On a recent weekend, at a busy restaurant in downtown Burbank, in the heart of his congressional district, Schiff talked about his plans for conducting an investigation that will be parallel to Mueller’s, probing Trump’s connections to Russia, Saudi Arabia, and other places around the world.”

“As Schiff described his approach, it became clear that he wasn’t just planning to cross Trump’s red line—he intended to obliterate it.”

Obamacare Ruling Delivers New Shock to Health System

December 15, 2018 at 12:26 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “Friday night’s ruling raises a number of decisions for the White House: Will the government appeal, how quickly and will its agencies continue to enforce the law in the meantime? It’s not clear what the Trump administration will choose to do, given its legal strategy to date.”

“Career Justice Department lawyers this summer were told to drop their defense of the law — a near-unprecedented decision that led three lawyers to remove their names from the government’s brief and prompted the senior attorney, Joel McElvain, to resign.”

Obamacare Ruling Could Be a Nightmare for Republicans

December 15, 2018 at 10:56 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

David Nather: “The Affordable Care Act, President Obama’s signature achievement, may be headed back to the Supreme Court after a conservative federal judge in Texas struck down the individual mandate as unconstitutional last evening.”

“This could be a nightmare for Republicans in suburbs and swing states.”

“The midterms proved that the ACA has gotten more popular since the GOP started trying to repeal it — especially the protections for pre-existing conditions.
If the law goes away, that goes with it. This is not the fight Republicans want to have.”

Mulvaney Expected to Remain Chief of Staff

December 15, 2018 at 10:45 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Mike Allen: “White House insiders expect Mulvaney to get the permanent gig. But Trump keeps control and doesn’t fully empower his guy, reminding Mulvaney who the real chief of staff is: No funny business like General John Kelly tried to pull, restricting enablers’ access to POTUS.”

“This is exactly why some other candidates didn’t take the job or didn’t get the job: They would have insisted on changes Trump doesn’t want to make.”

Asked why Mulvaney was named “acting,” the official said: “Because that’s what the president wants.”

Zinke Resigns as Interior Secretary

December 15, 2018 at 10:31 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Interior Department Secretary Ryan Zinke “submitted his resignation to the White House Saturday, facing intense pressure from the White House amid multiple probes tied to his real estate dealings in Montana and conduct while in office,” the Washington Post reports.

“While the former Navy SEAL and Montana congressman worked aggressively to promote Trump’s agenda of expanding domestic energy production, administration officials concluded weeks ago that he ranked as the Cabinet member most vulnerable to congressional investigations once Democrats took control of Congress in January.”

Mueller Still Wants to Interview Trump

December 15, 2018 at 7:49 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Special counsel Robert Mueller’s team continues to be interested in interviewing the President Trump,” CNN reports.

“Mueller’s interest in talking with the President is believed to include asking questions about the Trump’s state of mind in regard to actions under scrutiny in the obstruction of justice probe.”

VA Secretary Misled Senators During Confirmation

December 15, 2018 at 7:23 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Veterans Affairs Secretary Robert Wilkie “gave inaccurate answers to senators during his confirmation process about pro-Confederate speeches he delivered in 2009,” CNN reports.

“In response to questions about remarks he made at Confederate memorial events, Wilkie downplayed his participation in a June 2009 event at the Confederate memorial in Arlington National Cemetery as simply introducing a keynote speaker. He also said he didn’t have copies of remarks because he had not delivered a speech to such groups in ’15 to 20 years.'”

“But Wilkie’s comments stand in contradiction to what his spokesman told CNN’s KFile team last week, when he confirmed that Wilkie delivered a speech extolling the legacy of Robert E. Lee at that June 2009 ceremony at the Confederate memorial. The speech was the same one that he gave to another group in December 2009, which was also published in the Confederate Veteran magazine.”

Flashback Quote of the Day

December 15, 2018 at 7:09 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Yes, I am supporting Donald Trump, but I’m doing so despite the fact that I think he’s a terrible human being.”

— Interim White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney, quoted The State in November 2016.

Federal Judge Rules Obamacare Unconstitutional

December 14, 2018 at 10:13 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A federal judge in Texas said on Friday that the Affordable Care Act’s individual coverage mandate is unconstitutional and that the rest of the law must also fall,” CNN reports.

“Legal experts say the law will remain in effect for now, but the invalidation of the landmark health care law throws into doubt the future of health coverage for millions of Americans on the Obamacare exchanges and in Medicaid expansion. More than 4 million people have already signed up for 2019 coverage on the exchanges, and millions more are expected to pick plans before open enrollment ends Saturday.”

Washington Post: “Since the suit was filed in January, many health-law specialists have viewed its logic as weak but nevertheless have regarded the case as the greatest looming legal threat to the 2010 law, which has been a GOP whipping post ever since and assailed repeatedly in the courts.”

Papadopoulos Will Run for Congress

December 14, 2018 at 6:59 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Ex-Trump campaign aide George Papadopoulos announced that he will run for Congress in 2020, CNN reports.

The announcement comes a week after Papadopoulos was released from federal prison, where he served 12 days for lying to the FBI.

Biden Wrestles with Age as He Eyes 2020 Run

December 14, 2018 at 6:12 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“As he considers running for president, Joe Biden is talking with friends and longtime supporters about whether, at 76, he’s too old to seek the White House, according to several sources who have spoken with the former Democratic vice president,” the AP reports.

“The discussions suggest Biden is aware that his age may be the biggest hurdle to launching another bid for the Democratic presidential nomination, especially in an era when many in the party yearn for a new generation of leadership. He would be the oldest person to ever be elected president.”

Trump Names Mulvaney Acting Chief of Staff

December 14, 2018 at 6:10 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump announced on Friday that he had selected Mick Mulvaney, his budget director, to serve as his acting chief of staff, temporarily halting a week of speculation about who would take over one of the most important positions in the federal government,” the New York Times reports.

“Mr. Mulvaney, a hard-line conservative and former congressman from South Carolina, is a fiscal hawk who has produced budgets that cut federal spending only to see congressional Republicans and Democrats ignore them.”

Trump’s Inauguration Paid Trump’s Company

December 14, 2018 at 3:07 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“When it came out this year that President Trump’s inaugural committee raised and spent unprecedented amounts, people wondered where all that money went,” ProPublica reports.

“It turns out one beneficiary was Trump himself.”

“The inauguration paid the Trump Organization for rooms, meals and event space at the company’s Washington hotel… During the planning, Ivanka Trump, the president-elect’s eldest daughter and a senior executive with the Trump Organization, was involved in negotiating the price the hotel charged the 58th Presidential Inaugural Committee for venue rentals.”

Walker Signs Bill Curbing Successor’s Power

December 14, 2018 at 1:33 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Outgoing Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) “signed lame-duck legislation Friday that will scale back the authority of his Democratic successor — approving the entire legislation after saying he was inclined to veto parts of it,” the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

“The move came a day after Walker announced a $28 million incentive package for Kimberly-Clark Corp. using powers the legislation strips from incoming Democratic Gov. Tony Evers. If Walker had signed the legislation earlier, he wouldn’t have been able to cut the deal with Kimberly-Clark without permission from lawmakers.”

Christie Won’t Take Chief of Staff Job

December 14, 2018 at 1:15 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former Gov. Chris Christie told the New York Times that he told President Trump he doesn’t want to be considered to replace John Kelly as White House chief of staff.

Said Christie: “It’s an honor to have the president consider me as he looks to choose a new White House chief-of-staff. However, I’ve told the president that now is not the right time for me or my family to undertake this serious assignment. As a result, I have asked not to be considered for this post.”

December 14, 2018 at 12:31 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new CNN poll finds Joe Biden leading the Democratic presidential field with 30%, followed by Bernie Sanders at 14%, Beto O’Rourke at 9% and Cory Booker at 5%.

They are followed by John Kerry at 4%, Kamala Harris at 4% and Elizabeth Warren at 3%.

In related news, the Des Moines Register says their first Iowa poll comes out tomorrow evening.

December 14, 2018 at 12:02 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump’s search for a new White House chief of staff is centering around former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, senior adviser Jared Kushner and U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, Reuters reports.

While other candidates remain, the three men appear to be the top contenders with Christie leading the pack.

Manafort Advised White House on How to Attack Mueller

December 14, 2018 at 12:00 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Paul Manafort “provided advice to the president and senior White House officials during the earliest days of the Trump administration on how to undermine and discredit the FBI’s investigation into whether the president, his campaign aides, and family members conspired with the Russian Federation and its intelligence services to covertly defeat Hillary Clinton during the 2016 presidential campaign,” Vox reports.

“Manafort himself was under criminal investigation by the FBI during this same time, a fact then known to the White House.”
