Trump Upends Century-Old Approach to the World

February 24, 2025 at 7:37 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “The speed and energy with which the president has moved to remake Washington’s role in the world has been most visible in his approach to the war between Russia and Ukraine. He has embraced Russia’s strength and blasted the smaller country, falsely accusing President Volodymyr Zelensky of starting a conflict that began with a Russian invasion. He has insulted U.S. allies in Europe, who for decades have relied on the United States to check Russian power.”

“The result, diplomats and analysts say, has been to cede influence to Moscow. But that might just be the beginning. At worst, Trump’s strategy could embolden other global powers, notably China, to adopt more bellicose policies toward their neighbors, they say — the opposite of what some of his allies say needs to be the focus of U.S. foreign policy.”

Trump Ushers in New World for Putin

February 24, 2025 at 7:32 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “After three years of grinding warfare and isolation by the West, a world of new possibilities has opened up for Mr. Putin with a change of power in Washington.”

“Gone are the statements from the East Room of the White House about the United States standing up to bullies, supporting democracy over autocracy and ensuring freedom will prevail.”

“Gone, too, is Washington’s united front against Russia with its European allies, many of whom have begun to wonder if the new American administration will protect them against a revanchist Moscow, or even keep troops in Europe at all.”

Washington Post: 3 years after Russia’s invasion, Ukraine-U.S. politics has shifted.

Ritchie Torres Backs Cuomo for Mayor

February 24, 2025 at 7:26 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-NY) “is backing Andrew Cuomo for New York City mayor even though the former governor hasn’t formally entered the race,” the New York Post reports.

Said Torres: “The two most important things we need are competence and courage. Andrew Cuomo has the competence to govern the city. He has the courage to stand up to extremist politics — both from the far left and far right.”

February 24, 2025 at 6:42 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, who will declare his candidacy for governor of Ohio on Monday, wants to reshape public schools, cut regulations and slash spending,” NBC News reports.

“It’s a disruptive agenda that sounds a lot like the one that Ramaswamy helped draw up for President Donald Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE.”

Mike Johnson’s Moment of Truth

February 24, 2025 at 6:36 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Senate’s Plan B is in place. Now it’s up to Speaker Mike Johnson to deliver on Plan A — the ‘one big, beautiful bill’ he’s been promising for weeks,” Politico reports.

“It amounts to a key inflection point for President Donald Trump’s domestic policy agenda, and GOP senators — who muscled through their own two-bill legislative blueprint early Friday morning — are eagerly watching to see if Johnson can finally unify his fractious conference and move forward with his own plan.”

Playbook: “The sticking points: Moderates and front-line Republicans have opposed major cuts to Medicaid and the social safety net — $2 trillion over a decade — which the party wants to partially offset its other priorities’ deficit impact. Town halls with angry members of the public back home during last week’s recess may have amped up those concerns.”

Politico: These Republicans have a lot to lose if Congress cuts Medicaid.

Stock Market Turbulence Could Spell Trouble for Trump

February 24, 2025 at 6:17 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Donald Trump’s election helped turbocharge an already surging bull market in the U.S., sending stocks and cryptocurrencies to record highs,” Politico reports.

“Now, some on Wall Street are beginning to sound the alarm that the fast times can’t last.”

“JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon and others have warned that investors are plowing cash into stocks with inflated prices. Hedge fund giant Elliott Management said the blistering rise in crypto over the last year, with bitcoin up 89 percent, is the stuff of bubbles. So-called memestocks — companies like GameStop, whose shares tend to be driven by investor hype — have returned. And on top of that, economists say Trump’s plans for tariffs and an immigration crackdown — along with the dizzying pace of his policy moves — could roil the markets by stoking inflation and fueling uncertainty.”

Emboldened Kremlin Steps Up Efforts to Seize Businesses

February 23, 2025 at 10:50 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“After the fall of Communism, Russia ushered in capitalism by selling off billions of dollars in state assets,” the New York Times reports.

“Now, 30 years later, the Russian government is stepping up a wartime campaign to do the opposite: seizing private businesses, this time in the name of national security.”

“In the last month, courts have ordered Russia’s largest warehouse owner to be taken over by the state and also directed the nationalization of a major grain exporter. And in the most stunning case, prosecutors filed a lawsuit in January to seize Moscow’s second-largest airport.”

Zelensky Pushes Back Against U.S. Mineral Deal

February 23, 2025 at 10:45 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Volodymyr Zelensky pushed back on Sunday against demands from the Trump administration for billions in Ukrainian natural resources and for holding peace talks that exclude Ukraine, while announcing plans for a major summit of European leaders on Monday,” the New York Times reports.

“The Ukrainian leader’s efforts to shore up European support while pressing ahead on negotiations with the United States came despite ominous messages from President Trump in recent days belittling Mr. Zelensky and issuing threats if Ukraine does not soon agree to a minerals deal.”

Trump Names Dan Bongino as Deputy FBI Director

February 23, 2025 at 10:42 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Donald Trump has appointed right-wing commentator Dan Bongino as deputy director of the FBI, the BBC reports.

Wall Street Journal: “Bongino’s background is strikingly different from that of his predecessors. He is a former Secret Service agent and New York Police Department officer who has never worked for the FBI, a first for the holder of the deputy role. The post is responsible for overseeing the bureau’s day-to-day enforcement operations.”

Carville Says Trump on the Verge of ‘Collapse’

February 23, 2025 at 6:09 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

James Carville told Mediaite that the Trump administration would “collapse” within 30 days and advised Democrats to sit back and let it happen.

Said Carville: “What I have said very publicly is that Democrats need to play possum. This whole thing is collapsing. It doesn’t need Elizabeth Warren and somebody screaming to pacify some progressive advocacy groups in Washington, which, by the way, I wish these people were just useless. They’re actually worse than useless, that they’re detrimental. And they never, ever learn to shut up.”

He added: “I believe that this administration, in less than 30 days is in the midst of a massive collapse and particularly a collapse in public opinion.”

More: “It’s going to be easy pickings here in six weeks. Just lay back.”
