2020 Democrats Ignore Trump

January 19, 2019 at 12:31 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “Trump, who recently pined about being lonely in the White House, is lately finding himself in a position he’s rarely been in over the past few years: Ignored.”

“His political cachet has been driven by an unerring ability to goad other people into fights that benefit him. The metric he cares about is owning the television ratings and national attention, more than polling or anything else.”

“So what happens when, instead, he is met with something of a shrug?”

“The new silent treatment limits Trump’s ability to dictate national coverage and frame the day’s debate. And it’s providing an early template for how Democratic presidential candidates may attempt to deal with him in 2020, essentially forcing him out of a conversation they want to have with voters.”

Schultz Mulling Independent Bid for President

January 18, 2019 at 9:25 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Advisers to former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz have been exploring the possibility of launching an independent bid for the White House in 2020,” the Washington Post reports.

“The entry of a high-profile billionaire Democrat outside the traditional party structure would add an unpredictable dynamic to the increasingly sprawling campaign to deny President Trump a second term.”

Mueller Disputes Report on Cohen

January 18, 2019 at 8:32 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Less than 24 hours after the news site BuzzFeed reported that the president instructed his personal attorney to lie to Congress about his push for a Moscow real estate project, special counsel Robert Mueller’s office put out a statement firmly disputing the reporting,” the Washington Post reports.

“The statement was remarkable on several levels — first, the special counsel’s office speaks exceedingly rarely, and second, the statement seemed to drive a stake through a sensational allegation that Democratic lawmakers suggested earlier in the day could spell the end of the Trump presidency.”

BuzzFeed responded: “We are continuing to report and determine what the special counsel is disputing. We remain confident in the accuracy of our report.”

It Must Be Miserable to Be Donald Trump

January 18, 2019 at 5:54 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

George Will: “Dislike of him should be tempered by this consideration: He is an almost inexpressibly sad specimen. It must be misery to awaken to another day of being Donald Trump. He seems to have as many friends as his pluperfect self-centeredness allows, and as he has earned in an entirely transactional life. His historical ignorance deprives him of the satisfaction of working in a house where much magnificent history has been made. His childlike ignorance — preserved by a lifetime of single-minded self-promotion — concerning governance and economics guarantees that whenever he must interact with experienced and accomplished people, he is as bewildered as a kindergartener at a seminar on string theory.”

“Which is why this fountain of self-refuting boasts (‘I have a very good brain’) lies so much. He does so less to deceive anyone than to reassure himself. And as balm for his base, which remains oblivious to his likely contempt for them as sheep who can be effortlessly gulled by preposterous fictions. The tungsten strength of his supporters’ loyalty is as impressive as his indifference to expanding their numbers.”

“Either the electorate, bored with a menu of faintly variant servings of boorishness, or the 22nd Amendment will end this, our shabbiest but not our first shabby presidency.”

White House Pushes Long Odds Strategy for Wall

January 18, 2019 at 5:46 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The White House has a new, long-shot idea for getting President Trump’s border wall: persuading the Senate to take up the president’s wall request to force a deal with the Democrats, then reopen the government,” Politico reports.

“As the government shutdown enters its fifth week, the White House wants the Senate to take up legislation that would provide $5.7 billion for a barrier along the southern border, among other options that have been discussed with GOP leaders. Vice President Mike Pence and Trump son-in-law Jared Kushner met Thursday with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), and one option batted around was for congressional committees to take up the border request and potentially amend it in committee, all while the government is shutdown, according to a person familiar with the talks.”

“But even Republicans on the Hill recognize the idea is a nonstarter.”

Court Filings Line Up with Bombshell Story

January 18, 2019 at 4:06 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Although the cable news network has not corroborated last night’s bombshell report that President Trump instructed Michael Cohen to lie to Congress, CNN reports there are a handful of distinct areas where reporting from BuzzFeed News lines up perfectly with court records, including the charging documents against Michael Cohen, sentencing memos and hearings.

Cohen Returns Home with Black Eye and Injured Arm

January 18, 2019 at 3:02 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Michael Cohen returned to his Manhattan apartment Friday after getting medical treatment – with his arm appearing to be in a sling on a day President Trump and his team once again branded him a liar,” the Daily Mail reports.

“Cohen could be seen Friday with his left arm covered, hanging in a sling. He was holding a full-size white pillow while sporting a possible black eye. His right hand had a small bandage of the kind used to cover a small wound by an IV. He also wore a red identification bracelet of the kind distributed by hospitals.”

“Cohen advisor Lanny Davis said Cohen had gone into the hospital for pre-scheduled shoulder surgery.”

Trump Will Hold Second Summit with North Korea

January 18, 2019 at 2:58 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump will meet with North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong-un, in late February, the White House announced on Friday, continuing a high-level diplomatic dialogue that has eased tensions but shown little progress in eliminating the North’s nuclear arsenal,” the New York Times reports.

“The announcement came after Mr. Trump met for 90 minutes in the Oval Office with Kim Yong-chol, the former North Korean intelligence chief who has acted as the chief nuclear negotiator for Mr. Kim.”

Texas Republican Calls Border Crisis a ‘Myth’

January 18, 2019 at 2:20 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Will Hurd (R-TX), whose district includes 820 miles on the U.S.-Mexico border, told Rolling Stone that President Trump’s claim of a border crisis is a “myth,” and that a border wall is the “most expensive and least effective way to do border security” and is a “third-century solution to a 21st-century problem.”

He added that using eminent domain to take land for the border wall would impact more than 1,000 Texas property owners.

If Trump Told Cohen to Lie, Impeachment Is Coming

January 18, 2019 at 2:11 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Garrett Graff: “The allegation, which Buzzfeed sourced to two federal law enforcement officials, simultaneously adds new information to both the ‘collusion’ and ‘obstruction’ sides of the Russia probe. The idea that the President of the United States directed his personal attorney to lie to Congress about his attempt to complete a multi-hundred-million-dollar deal with Vladimir Putin in the midst of the presidential campaign is, in short, as big as it gets.”

“While we’ll be unpacking the implications of the apparent revelation for days to come, there are six aspects of the new report which, if true, make clear the scale of the political peril facing the president as of Friday morning.”

Reading the Shutdown Tea Leaves

January 18, 2019 at 1:15 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Playbook: “VP Mike Pence and White House aide Jared Kushner met with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell  in the Capitol yesterday, the first such meeting in a few days. So it’s clear some new effort is afoot to break the gridlock of what’s now approaching a monthlong shutdown.”

“We keep hearing that the administration is willing to throw some immigration concessions in the mix to get government open. What will they be? Who knows. President Trump is notoriously finicky when it comes to immigration reform — he has said, at times, that he is in favor of a bipartisan immigration reform process, but quickly retreats from that position. He’s also embraced hard-line immigration policies that make his words seem meaningless.”

“The hang ups: Democrats will need the government open to negotiate. Republicans don’t want government open to negotiate.”

The First Viral Moment In Politics

January 18, 2019 at 1:08 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Mark Murray: “As another presidential election begins to take shape in this Internet Age, Saturday marks the 15th anniversary of Howard Dean’s famous ‘scream’ heard around the world, a moment that almost instantly became the butt of late-night jokes and the epitaph for his failed presidential campaign.”

“But it was also much more: the ‘scream’ was one of the very first viral moments in American politics and a forerunner of how politics is played today.”

“Coming just two weeks before Facebook was created, a year before there was a YouTube and two years before there was Twitter, it was arguably the first meme in politics, long before that term entered our vernacular.”

Biden Inches Closer to White House Bid

January 18, 2019 at 12:48 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

CNN: “Yet for all of those challenges, conversations with more than two dozen aides, donors and supporters, point to a consensus that Biden is still likely to run in what he repeatedly calls the most important presidential race of his lifetime. But until he gives the final nod, many caution he could also decide against it.”

“Another ally who recently spoke to Biden said he was left the impression that the former vice president was closer to launching a bid than retreating to the sidelines. And his team is preparing a detailed campaign plan to be ready the moment he pulls the trigger.”

Kamala Harris Will Base Campaign In Baltimore

January 18, 2019 at 12:15 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“With her expected campaign launch nearing, Kamala Harris has settled on Baltimore for her team’s HQ, after also considering Atlanta and (briefly) Philadelphia,” according to New York magazine.

“A West Coast campaign base was never really in play for the California senator. Logistics, logistics, logistics.”

Directing Cohen to Lie Is Worse Than Watergate

January 18, 2019 at 11:36 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Ryan Goodman: “What makes the Cohen lies even worse—and yes, far worse than Watergate—is that it exposed any U.S. officials who were involved in orchestrating his false testimony to blackmail by Russia. As Barbara McQuade, former U.S. Attorney and professor at the University of Michigan Law School, wrote at Just Security, ‘in the context of counterintelligence investigations, lies can also compromise national security… A foreign adversary like Russia can use lies as leverage over government officials to coerce them into complying with its demands or else face exposure of the lies.’ As former acting Attorney General Sally Yates testified in the context of Flynn’s lying about Russian contacts, ‘To state the obvious, you don’t want your national security adviser compromised with the Russians.’”

“If Trump suborned false statements, the President would have exposed not only himself to Kremlin blackmail, but also other members of his team who, according to court documents and reporting, helped orchestrate his personal lawyer’s congressional testimony.”

Trump Begins Third Year With Dismal Approval Rating

January 18, 2019 at 11:22 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Pew Research survey finds President Trump begins his third year with a 37% job approval rating while 59% disapprove of his performance.

The survey also finds “that a growing share of Americans say they trust what Trump says less than what previous presidents said while they were in office. Nearly six-in-ten (58%) say they trust what Trump says less than previous presidents, up from 54% last June and 51% in February 2017, shortly after he took office.”

“The public also continues to fault the ethical standards of top administration officials. Just 39% rate their ethical standards as excellent or good, while 59% say they are not good or poor.”

For comparison, FiveThirtyEight shows Trump’s approval at 39% to 55%.

This Charge Is Different

January 18, 2019 at 11:05 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Adam Serwer: “While evidence that the Trump campaign sought to assist the Russian effort to interfere in the 2016 election, and that the president then sought to hamper the federal investigation into that effort, has been in public view for some time, evidence that the president directed Cohen to lie to Congress would be something different entirely, a claim that the president conspired to commit a crime in pursuit of personal financial gain. Republicans have tried their best to set expectations so that only the clearest and most shocking of acts would qualify as criminal—and Trump’s reported actions not only meet but exceed them.”

“The report, if verified, provides a potentially simple narrative for a story that has often seemed complicated: Trump sought to profit from a real-estate deal in Moscow, and so defended Russia against accusations of interference, and then directed his personal attorney to commit perjury to cover up what he had done.”
