Trump Cuts Teams That Fight Election Interference

February 8, 2025 at 12:16 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Trump administration this week eliminated much of the federal government’s front line of defense against foreign interference in U.S. elections,” the Washington Post reports.

“The move, which follows years of Trump and his allies disputing the role that Russian influence campaigns played in his first successful bid for president, alarmed state election officials and election security experts, who warned that safeguarding Americans from foreign disinformation campaigns will be difficult if no one at the federal level is doing that work.”

Why Trump’s In-Your-Face Campaign Will Never End

February 8, 2025 at 11:48 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“It’s not just wild 5 a.m. tweets from Donald Trump anymore,” Axios reports.

“Three weeks into his second term, Trump’s White House is pumping out personal insults to his political enemies, provocative videos and flame-throwing social media attacks like no administration before it.”

“During Trump’s first term, he was something of a lone wolf on Twitter. But in Trump 2.0, it’s like the 2024 campaign never ended: An entire team is his avatar — a smash-mouth, 24-7 PR operation that seems bent on juicing political divisions.”

NIH Slashes Overhead Payments for Research

February 8, 2025 at 11:30 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“In a Friday night move that quickly drew howls of protest from the U.S. biomedical research community, President Donald Trump’s administration today announced it is immediately reducing by at least half the so-called indirect cost payments that the National Institutes of Health makes to universities, hospitals, and research institutes to help cover facilities and administrative costs,” Science reports.

Washington Post: NIH cuts billions of dollars in biomedical funding, effective immediately.

New York Times: Deep cuts to medical research funds could hobble university budgets.

The Football Team Trump Loves to Hate

February 8, 2025 at 11:22 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A record audience is expected to watch the Super Bowl this weekend, including Donald Trump, who will be the first sitting president to attend the game in person,” Politico reports.

“While polls suggest a majority of Americans will be rooting for the Philadelphia Eagles to defeat the dynastic Kansas City Chiefs, Trump won’t be one of them. He hasn’t explicitly expressed his preference, but he’s left a bread crumb trail suggesting nothing would make him happier than to see the Eagles get slaughtered in the biggest event in American sports.”

“Trump’s disdain for the NFL team traces back to 2018, the first and only time the Eagles have ever won a Super Bowl. The game took place against the backdrop of an unusually politicized season, marked by the polarizing issue of players refusing to stand for the national anthem in symbolic protest of racism. In his first year as president, Trump objected to the practice, harshly criticizing players who took a knee.”

The Athletic: Two Black QBs will start Super Bowl LIX, but NFL diversity is still a work in progress.

Senators Overwhelmed by Phone Calls

February 8, 2025 at 11:20 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Senators were informed this week that the Senate phone system was receiving 1,600 calls per minute, a sharp increase from the usual 40 calls a minute…”

“While the phones had not completely stopped ringing, as they have in the past under heavy loads, members were told that some constituents would be sent straight to voice mail to prevent a complete shutdown.”

Trump Says He Won’t Deport Prince Harry

President Trump said he ruled out deporting Prince Harry, the New York Post reports.

Said Trump: “I don’t want to do that. I’ll leave him alone. He’s got enough problems with his wife. She’s terrible.”

Hegseth Uses His First Town Hall to Attack Diversity

February 8, 2025 at 11:02 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth gave his first public address to the Pentagon work force on Friday, spending much of the session defending his efforts to dismantle diversity and inclusion policies,” the New York Times reports.

“Mr. Hegseth opened his remarks by saying ‘all glory to God,’ and said that President Trump had asked him not to maintain ‘the status quo.’”

Said Hegseth: “We’re going to take unconventional approaches.”

Trump Orders Halt to Aid to South Africa

February 8, 2025 at 7:35 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump ordered that all foreign assistance to South Africa be halted and said his administration would prioritize the resettling of white, “Afrikaner refugees” into the United States because of what he called actions by the country’s government that “racially disfavored landowners,” the New York Times reports.

House GOP Nowhere Close on ‘One Big, Beautiful Bill’

February 8, 2025 at 7:03 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“House Republicans are still far from finalizing several key details of a budget blueprint that Speaker Mike Johnson is pledging to advance in the House next week, with negotiations expected to continue through the weekend as the Senate races ahead with its own plans,” Politico reports.

“While House GOP leaders trumpeted tremendous progress coming out of a White House meeting with President Donald Trump on Thursday, key holdouts on Trump’s sweeping agenda of tax cuts, border security and energy initiatives indicated Friday that they remained unconvinced about the level of spending cuts in the bill.”

Democrats Dig In Against Mike Johnson on Shutdown

February 8, 2025 at 6:58 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Democrats are locking arms against House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) on government funding, vowing to use the process to try to roll back many of President Trump’s efforts to upend the federal government,” Axios reports.

Democrats Take Aim at Elon Musk

February 8, 2025 at 6:56 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“For eight years, Democrats saw Donald Trump as the most toxic brand in politics, a singular figure who unified their disparate factions and filled their political coffers with campaign contributions. The limits of that strategy became evident in November,” the New York Times reports.

“They are now turning their attention to a new supervillain: Elon Musk.”

“In the early weeks of the second Trump administration, Democrats are seeking to highlight the prominence of Musk, the polarizing technology mogul, in the new administration.”

“The strategy is the first sign of unified opposition for a rudderless and leaderless Democratic Party.”

Africa Reels as U.S. Aid Agency Is Dismantled

February 8, 2025 at 6:54 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“For decades, sub-Saharan Africa was a singular focus of American foreign aid. The continent received over $8 billion a year, money that was used to feed starving children, supply lifesaving drugs and provide wartime humanitarian assistance,” the New York Times reports.

“In a few short weeks, President Trump and the South African-born billionaire Elon Musk have burned much of that work to the ground, vowing to completely gut the U.S. Agency for International Aid.”

CNN: Trump is gutting an agency that his daughter once championed.

Workers Who Took Trump ‘Buyout’ Feel Fear and Regret

February 8, 2025 at 6:52 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“For the federal workers struggling to decide whether to take the Trump administration’s deferred resignation program, a Massachusetts federal judge’s order to delay the Thursday night deadline was a reprieve — a chance to take a few more days to weigh a life-altering offer to leave their jobs with pay through Sept. 30,” the Washington Post reports.

“But for some of the tens of thousands of federal employees who have already accepted the deal, the Thursday afternoon ruling in a lawsuit seeking to nullify the program brought confusion about their status, regret that they’d jumped at the offer too quickly, questions about whether to try to take back the decision or fear that if the program is ultimately thrown out, they now had a target on their backs.”

Judge Blocks Elon Musk from Treasury Data

February 8, 2025 at 6:47 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A federal judge issued an emergency order early Saturday prohibiting Elon Musk’s U.S. DOGE Service from accessing personal and financial data on millions of Americans kept at the Treasury Department, noting the possibility for irreparable harm,” the Washington Post reports.

“The ruling came hours after attorneys general from 19 states sued to stop Musk’s team from dealing with sensitive files during its review of federal payment systems — an unprecedented effort that skirted firm security measures that permitted access to systems only to trained Treasury employees.”

Trump Appoints Himself Kennedy Center Chair

February 7, 2025 at 8:52 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump will appoint himself chairman of the prestigious John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, he said Friday,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

Said Trump: “The Kennedy Center is an American Jewel, and must reflect the brightest stars on its stage from all across our nation. We will soon announce a new Board, with an amazing Chairman, Donald J. Trump!”

In the same post, he criticized the center for holding “drag shows specifically targeting our youth.”

USA Today: Trump says he ousted Kennedy Center chair and board members.

‘An Insider Threat’

February 7, 2025 at 8:48 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A U.S. Treasury Threat Intelligence Analysis called the incursion by Elon Musk’s DOGE staff “the single greatest insider threat risk the Bureau of the Fiscal Service has ever faced,” Wired reports.

Bloomberg: “The stark warning was delivered to the Treasury Department in a weekly intelligence bulletin by government contractor Booz Allen Hamilton.”

Politico: 19 states sue Trump, Treasury to halt DOGE access.
