Mueller Ready to Pounce on Trump Concessions to Moscow

December 18, 2018 at 9:04 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“For more than a year, special counsel Robert Mueller’s office has questioned witnesses broadly about their interactions with well-connected Russians. But three sources familiar with Mueller’s probe told the Daily Beast that his team is now zeroing in on Trumpworld figures who may have attempted to shape the administration’s foreign policy by offering to ease U.S. sanctions on Russia.”

“The Special Counsel’s Office is preparing court filings that are expected to detail Trump associates’ conversations about sanctions relief—and spell out how those offers and counter-proposals were characterized to top figures on the campaign and in the administration.”

“The new details would not only bookend a multi-year investigation by federal prosecutors into whether and how Trump associates seriously considered requests by Moscow to ease the financial measures. The new court filings could also answer a central question of the so-called Russia investigation: What specific policy changes, if any, did the Kremlin hope to get in return from its political machinations?”

The Economy Is Becoming a Storm Cloud for Trump

December 18, 2018 at 8:42 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

First Read: “These numbers from our recent NBC/WSJ poll should be getting more attention: The percentage of Americans believing the economy will get worse in the next 12 months is at its highest point since 2013. Overall, 28% say the economy will get better in the next year, 33% think it will get worse and 37% believe it will stay the same.”

“Those numbers were essentially reversed last January: 35% said the economy would get better, 20% said it would get worse and 43% said it would stay the same.”

Associated Press: “The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell again Monday, the latest dip in the roller coaster markets amid the strain of Trump’s trade war, rising interest rates and worries about a slowing global economy.”

Mueller Wants More Answers from Trump

December 18, 2018 at 8:03 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rudy Giuliani told Mike Allen that President Trump’s lawyers are negotiating with Robert Mueller’s team over whether to provide additional written answers.

Said Giuliani: “We might agree… Or we might not. They have the right to submit more questions to us. We have the right to say yes or no.”

He added: “It’s not particularly contentious. Other things are contentious.”

O’Rourke In No Hurry to Decide on Presidential Bid

December 18, 2018 at 7:23 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“If the deep field of potential Democratic presidential contenders is on pins and needles as Beto O’Rourke decides his next move, it could be a long wait,” the AP reports.

“The outgoing Texas congressman’s team says he has no timeline or roadmap for deciding if he’d like to parlay a surprisingly close loss to Republican Sen. Ted Cruz into a White House try. People close to O’Rourke insist he hasn’t expanded staff or lined up consultants even as the interest in him intensifies. They say he’s spoken to top Democratic donors, but describe such discussions as fact-finding missions, researching the logistics of a possible run rather than securing assurances that coming campaign cash would go to him and not others.”

Trump Wishes Flynn Good Luck In Sentencing

December 18, 2018 at 7:15 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump in an early morning tweet wished Michael Flynn “good luck” ahead of his former national security adviser’s sentencing for lying to the FBI.

He added: “Will be interesting to see what he has to say, despite tremendous pressure being put on him, about Russian Collusion in our great and, obviously, highly successful political campaign. There was no Collusion!”

No Spending Deal In Sight

December 18, 2018 at 7:14 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Playbook: “We thought we were somewhere, but in fact, we are nowhere. Yesterday afternoon, we started hearing that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell was going to file a so-called minibus spending bill — seven bills wrapped into one — with an increase in border spending. He didn’t, and Monday went by without appreciable progress in funding the government.”

“Time is dwindling, and Capitol Hill is waiting for President Trump to say what he would like to sign. At this point, it would be difficult to see Congress clear a seven-bill minibus in four days. So either the government shuts down Friday, or somehow both sides agree to a short-term spending bill.”

“The president isn’t going to get his $5 billion. No way, no how. So the question is what will he accept, and how much time will he give Congress to do it. The House isn’t in until tomorrow night. At the moment, Trump isn’t negotiating, nor is he stating how he’d like to see this standoff resolved.”

Roger Stone Admits to Spreading Lies on InfoWars

December 18, 2018 at 7:05 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Wall Street Journal: “As questions swirl about his credibility, former Trump campaign adviser Roger Stone settled a defamation suit seeking $100 million in damages on Monday for publishing false and misleading statements on InfoWars.com, a far-right website known for promoting conspiracy theories. The agreement requires Mr. Stone to run ads in national newspapers, including The Wall Street Journal, apologizing for making defamatory statements about a Chinese businessman who is a vocal critic of Beijing.”

“It also requires Mr. Stone to publish a retraction of the false statements on social media. Doing so exempts him from paying any of the damages. In a text message, Mr. Stone described his conduct as ‘irresponsible’ and added that ‘I am solely responsible for fulfilling the terms of the settlement.’”

Trump Campaign Swallows the GOP

December 18, 2018 at 6:59 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump “is planning to roll out an unprecedented structure for his 2020 reelection, a streamlined organization that incorporates the [RNC] and the president’s campaign into a single entity. It’s a stark expression of Trump’s stranglehold over the Republican Party: Traditionally, a presidential reelection committee has worked in tandem with the national party committee, not subsumed it,” Politico reports.

“Under the plan, which has been in the works for several weeks, the Trump reelection campaign and the RNC will merge their field and fundraising programs into a joint outfit dubbed Trump Victory. The two teams will also share office space rather than operate out of separate buildings, as has been custom. The goal is to create a single, seamless organization that moves quickly, saves resources, and — perhaps most crucially — minimizes staff overlap and the kind of infighting that marked the 2016 relationship between the Trump campaign and the party.”

Republicans In Dark Over Trump’s Shutdown Plan

December 17, 2018 at 9:10 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

CNN: “Sitting in Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s office Monday evening, senior Senate Republicans had no answer to a basic question: What would President Donald Trump sign to avoid a partial government shutdown?”

“Attendees said there is an array of options to avoid a partial shutdown over Trump’s demands for $5 billion for his border wall, but GOP lawmakers are in the dark about what the President would actually sign.”

Mueller Releases Michael Flynn Interview

December 17, 2018 at 9:06 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Special counsel Robert Mueller “has released a January 2017 memo detailing the FBI’s interview that month with Michael Flynn — a moment that led to a high-profile criminal case against the former Trump national security adviser,” CNN reports.

Marcy Wheeler: “And it is unbelievably damning, in part because it shows the degree to which Flynn’s lies served to protect Trump.”

“Flynn lied to hide Trump’s personal involvement in telling the Russians to hold off on responding to Obama’s sanctions. And when the FBI investigated those lies, Trump fired the FBI Director to try to end that investigation.”

Warren Calls Iowa Democrats

December 17, 2018 at 8:59 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Elizabeth Warren “has yet to make an appearance in Iowa, but she’s personally reaching out to Iowa Democrats as she considers a possible 2020 run for president,” the Des Moines Register reports.

“Warren is one of the few possible Democratic presidential contenders who has not visited the first-in-the-nation caucus state in recent months, though she did deploy staff and resources to aid Iowa Democrats ahead of the midterms.”

Former U.S. Attorney Mulls Challenge to Pat Roberts

December 17, 2018 at 8:47 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Pat Roberts (R-KS) “looks vulnerable to Democrats — and some Republicans, and that’s a big reason the 2020 race has quickly drawn a prominent potential challenger, former U. S. Attorney for Kansas Barry Grissom (D),” McClatchy reports.

“Grissom confirmed Monday that he’s been considering a run for U.S. Senate as a Democrat for roughly a year.”

“He’s not officially made his decision, but he’s actively is laying the groundwork to mount a challenge against Roberts, the Kansas Republican who has been in Congress for nearly four decades.”

Russian Disinformation Targeted Robert Mueller

December 17, 2018 at 8:43 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Months after President Trump took office, Russia’s disinformation teams trained their sites on a new target: special counsel Robert S. Mueller III. Having worked to help get Trump into the White House, they now worked to neutralize the biggest threat to his staying there,” the Washington Post reports.

“The Russian operatives unloaded on Mueller through fake accounts on Facebook, Twitter and beyond, falsely claiming that the former FBI director was corrupt and that the allegations of Russian interference in the 2016 election were crackpot conspiracies. One post on Instagram — which emerged as an especially potent weapon in the Russian social media arsenal — claimed that Mueller had worked in the past with ‘radical Islamic groups.'”

“Such tactics exemplified how Russian teams ranged nimbly across social media platforms in a shrewd online influence operation aimed squarely at American voters.”

White House Legal Team Gears Up for House Probes

December 17, 2018 at 6:46 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A White House already sidetracked by special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe is now racing to prepare for a new Congress that is vowing more aggressive oversight of the administration. Belatedly, the White House has begun to fill key positions to face off with Democrats in a second front of legal sparring,” NBC News reports.

“Democrats take control of the House of Representatives in just 17 days and are already preparing a multi-pronged oversight strategy. But White House preparations stand in contrast to how the Obama administration girded for the incoming GOP Congress it faced after its first two years in office — in part because a new legal team is just getting started.”

Tulsi Gabbard Moves Forward with Presidential Bid

December 17, 2018 at 3:58 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI) may make an announcement about a presidential bid as soon as this week, BuzzFeed News reports.

“Even in a barely formed presidential field, Gabbard would enter the race as an underdog. She did not rate a mention in a Des Moines Register/CNN poll of the Democratic presidential field last week. House members have an inherently difficult time running for national office, as they are often little known outside their district. The last one to successfully do it was James Garfield — in 1880.”

Re-Election Could Allow Trump to Get Away with It

December 17, 2018 at 3:39 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “The statute of limitations on the campaign finance felonies in question, as well as virtually any other felony with which President Trump might be charged, is five years, beginning with when the offenses were committed. Especially if Trump were reelected in 2020, he would still be a sitting president when those five years are up. Does that mean he might be able to run out the clock? Would he be legally free from prosecution if he serves two full terms in office?”

“Notably, the OLC opinion recognized this risk. The drafters believed, however, that either Congress could lengthen the statute of limitations or the courts could ‘toll’ the statute – that is, freeze it in place until the president has left office – as a matter of their ‘equitable’ discretion. But neither option is especially likely. For one thing, Congress cannot lengthen the statute of limitations if the statute has already run; the Supreme Court so held in 2003. And while Congress might be able to lengthen the statute before it has fully run, it almost surely could not constitutionally do so only for the case of United States v. Trump.”

Biden Leads Democrats In Iowa

December 17, 2018 at 3:33 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Focus on Rural America poll in Iowa finds Joe Biden leading the Democratic presidential field with 30%, followed by Bernie Sanders at 13%, Beto O’Rourke at 11%, Amy Klobuchar at 10% and Elizabeth Warren at 9%.

Key takeaway: Biden and Warren each saw seven-point drops in their performance since the poll was last in the field in September.

California Upends 2020 Primary Calendar

December 17, 2018 at 3:06 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Wall Street Journal: “When Iowa Democrats hold their February 2020 presidential caucuses, millions of Californians will already have their primary ballots.”

“The geography for primaries will likely mean the voters critical to winning the presidential nomination will be considerably different from the electorate that carried the party to sweeping victories in the 2018 midterm elections.”
