Trump’s Shifting Net Worth Raises Flags

February 27, 2019 at 4:38 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“How President Trump may have inflated and deflated his personal wealth is more than mere curiosity: It could be of keen interest to any authorities trying to figure out if he misrepresented himself to insurance companies and lenders,” Bloomberg reports.

“Former Trump fixer Michael Cohen attested to Trump’s shifting wealth valuations to lawmakers on Wednesday, bearing what he said were annual net-worth summaries prepared for Trump earlier this decade. Trump handed the summary with high valuations to lenders and journalists, Cohen testified. When it came to tax authorities, he lowballed.”

“If falsehoods went to financial institutions, that would provide fertile ground for prosecutors in New York.”

Christie Says Trump Should Be Worried

February 27, 2019 at 4:11 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) told ABC News that one remark Michael Cohen made during his House Oversight Committee testimony should worry President Trump.

Said Christie: “The words that he said today that would send a chill up my spine at the White House would be, ‘I am in constant contact with the southern district.'”

D.C. Official Subpoenas Trump Inaugural Committee

February 27, 2019 at 3:57 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The attorney general for the District of Columbia has subpoenaed documents from President Trump’s inaugural committee, the third governmental body to delve into how the fund raised $107 million and spent it to celebrate Mr. Trump’s swearing in,” the New York Times reports.

“The latest subpoena follows similar demands for documents by federal prosecutors in Manhattan and by New Jersey’s attorney general. The attorney general in Washington is a local official who enforces statutes governing the operation of nonprofit organizations like the inaugural committee.”

Kushner Makes Little Progress on Middle East Peace

February 27, 2019 at 3:24 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“White House adviser Jared Kushner made a whirlwind visit this week to rally U.S.-allied Gulf Arab allies to support his still- unannounced Middle East peace plan, the leaked contours of which suggest little has been done to address Arab demands,” Reuters reports.

“Kushner’s approach to ending the Israeli-Palestinian conflict does not appear to have progressed since his last regional tour in June, focusing largely on economic initiatives at the expense of a land-for-peace deal long central to the official Arab position.”

Gaetz Under Investigation By Florida State Bar

February 27, 2019 at 3:20 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Florida Bar has opened an investigation into whether Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) violated professional conduct rules by threatening former Trump fixer Michael Cohen ahead of Cohen’s congressional testimony on Wednesday,” the Daily Beast reports.

Extra Bonus Quote of the Day

February 27, 2019 at 1:39 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The interesting thing is that there hasn’t been one Republican yet who has tried to defend the president on the substance, and I think that’s something that should be concerning to the White House. Why are no Republicans standing up and defending the president on the substance?”

— Former Gov. Chris Christie (R), in an interview on ABC News about the Michael Cohen hearings.

Cohen Says Trump Being Investigated for Other Crimes

February 27, 2019 at 1:31 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Michael Cohen testified that federal prosecutors are investigating unspecified criminal allegations regarding President Trump that haven’t been made public, the Washington Post reports.

Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) asked Cohen whether he was aware of “any wrongdoing or illegal act'”concerning the president that had not been acknowledged during Cohen’s testimony. Cohen said he was unable to answer because it’s a topic under investigation by the Southern District of New York.

Wall Street Journal: “We’re not sure what this means exactly, but it’s certainly an interesting revelation.”

Phone Polling In Crisis

February 27, 2019 at 1:29 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “The percentage of Americans willing to participate in telephone polls has hit a new low, according to a new report, raising doubts about the continued viability of the phone surveys that have traditionally dominated politics and elections, both in the media and in campaigns.”

“The Pew Research Center reported Wednesday that the response rate for its phone polls last year fell to just 6 percent — meaning pollsters could only complete interviews with 6 percent of the households in their samples. It continues the long-term decline in response rates, which had leveled off earlier this decade.”

Early Observations from Cohen’s Testimony

February 27, 2019 at 12:41 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Playbook: “First of all, it’s amazing to see members on both sides of the aisle repeatedly go down rabbit holes that elicit no new information.”

“Second point: Republicans mostly focused on tarnishing Cohen, highlighting that he had lied in his life, and to others to benefit himself. They didn’t really focus on defending Trump in any material way.”

“Third point: Cohen said Don Jr., Ivanka and Eric know everything about the Trump Organization. Is there any way Chairman Elijah Cummings (D-MD) won’t call them to testify soon?”

Roger Stone Says Michael Cohen Is Lying

February 27, 2019 at 12:30 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Roger Stone pushed back against Michael Cohen’s claims that Stone told Trump in July 2016 that he had spoken to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange about an email dump that would hurt Hillary Clinton’s campaign, saying in a text message to BuzzFeed News: ‘Mr. Cohen’s statement is not true.'”

“Stone’s text, which he made clear was a ‘statement,’ was just the one sentence, and he did not explain what exactly about Cohen’s testimony he maintained was false. Stone, who is facing criminal charges for lying to Congress, is under a gag order not to publicly comment on his case, special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation, or any ‘participants’ in his case or the investigation.”

Exchange of the Day

February 27, 2019 at 12:21 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

ABC News captured this exchange between Rep. Paul Gosar (R-AZ) and Michael Cohen during today’s House Oversight Committee hearing:

GOSAR: You’re a pathological liar. You don’t know truth from falsehood.

COHEN: Sir, I’m sorry, are you referring to me or the President?

It’s Not Just Cohen Against Trump on Hush Money

February 27, 2019 at 12:18 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Wall Street Journal: “On the hush-money payments, it’s not just Mr. Cohen’s word against President Trump’s. David Pecker, the chief executive of the National Enquirer’s publisher, has also told federal prosecutors about Mr. Trump’s involvement in the payment scheme, the Journal has previously reported.”

“For instance, Mr. Pecker met with then-candidate Donald Trump in August 2015 and offered to use the National Enquirer to buy the silence of any women who tried to publicize allegations of sexual encounters with Mr. Trump.”

GOP Operative Charged In North Carolina

February 27, 2019 at 11:58 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

McCrae Dowless, the political operative who emerged as a central figure in the investigation into irregularities in North Carolina’s 9th congressional district, was arrested and charged with a series of charges related to his handling of absentee ballots in the 2016 general election and 2018 primary, WRAL reports.

What Cohen’s Testimony Tells Us About Trump

February 27, 2019 at 11:42 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Adam Davidson: “Wednesday’s testimony is a huge moment in Trump’s Presidency. It is unlikely, though, to diminish the country’s political chasm. Cohen will be dismissed by the President and his allies as a liar trying to reduce his prison sentence. Trump’s supporters will continue to back him.”

“But it will be a kind of accounting, under oath and before the world, from Cohen that we haven’t had yet. It is only a beginning, a timid beginning, that both gives new information and is also a crucial performance, a visual image of Trump’s indecency that will be remembered for generations. It is unlikely to be the last.”

The Wall Street Journal has an excellent live blog of new revelations in Cohen’s testimony.

Michael Cohen Testifies

February 27, 2019 at 9:55 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Michael Cohen, President Trump’s former lawyer and “fixer,” will testify before the House Oversight Committee at 10 a.m. ET.

The Washington Post has an annotated version of Cohen’s opening statement in which he makes three explosive charges:

  • “Mr. Trump knew about the release of the hacked Democratic National Committee emails ahead of time… Mr. Trump knew from Roger Stone in advance about the WikiLeaks drop of emails.”
  • “Mr. Trump knew of and directed the Trump Moscow negotiations throughout the campaign and lied about it… And, so, I lied about it, too… Mr. Trump’s personal lawyers reviewed and edited my statement to Congress about the timing of the Moscow Tower negotiations before I gave it.”
  • “He asked me to pay off an adult film star with whom he had an affair, and to lie to his wife about it… Mr. Trump directed me to use my own personal funds from a Home Equity Line of Credit to avoid any money being traced back to him that could negatively impact his campaign… The president of the United States wrote a personal check for the payment of hush money as part of a criminal scheme to violate campaign finance laws.”

Underscoring the significance of the testimony, it will be carried by all broadcast and cable television networks.

Bonus Quote of the Day

February 27, 2019 at 9:44 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Mr. Trump called me a ‘rat’ for choosing to tell the truth — much like a mobster would do when one of his men decides to cooperate with the government.”

— Michael Cohen, in prepared testimony before the House Oversight Committee.

Most of Warren’s Home Delegation Holds Off on Endorsing

February 27, 2019 at 9:35 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“As Sen. Elizabeth Warren jets off to Iowa, California, Georgia, and Puerto Rico looking for support for her budding presidential campaign, she may have some unfinished business back home,” the Boston Globe reports.

“A Globe survey of the Massachusetts congressional delegation showed more members have held off on endorsing the state’s senior US senator than have announced they are backing her national bid.”

Is Cohen’s Check Proof Trump Committed a Crime?

February 27, 2019 at 9:20 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

This piece is only available to Political Wire members.

In his testimony before the House Oversight Committee, Michael Cohen will produce a check for $35,000 signed by President Trump that he says is a partial reimbursement for hush money paid to two women who claimed affairs with the president. The check was drawn from Trump’s personal checking account after he became president.
