Have Democrats Moved Past Bernie Sanders?

January 15, 2019 at 7:22 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Boston Globe: “Yes, supporters of Senator Bernie Sanders are hosting house parties and signing petitions this month to show the Vermont independent that his loyal followers are still feeling the Bern and want him to run for president again in 2020.”

“But as Sanders weighs another campaign, some say that even as he has moved the Democratic Party ideologically — pushing issues such as Medicare for all, free college tuition, and a $15 minimum wage into the mainstream — the party has moved past him personally.”

Axios notes another huge factor in calls for Sanders to stand down: New York Times and Politico reports from women who say they faced sexual harassment and sexism in Sanders’ 2016 campaign.

British Parliament to Vote on E.U. Withdrawal Plan

January 15, 2019 at 7:16 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “After two and a half years of negotiation, argument, predictions and posturing, Parliament will finally decide on Tuesday on a bill that dictates the terms of Britain’s departure from the European Union, one of the most closely watched votes the lawmakers are likely to cast in their careers.”

“Prime Minister Theresa May has spent all her energies trying to convince Parliament — and Britain — that the divorce deal she negotiated with Brussels is the best way forward. But she hasn’t made the sale. The House of Commons is expected to defeat the deal by a wide margin, and no one is completely certain what will come next.”

“Debate should end late this afternoon, with voting scheduled to start at 7 p.m. in London (2 p.m. Eastern).”

GOP Punishes Steve King While Ignoring Trump

January 15, 2019 at 7:12 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump professed ignorance Monday about recent remarks from Rep. Steve King regarding white supremacy, while the storm around the Iowa Republican’s inflammatory comments continued to grow and senior GOP officials moved to strip him of valuable committee assignments,” the Washington Post reports.

“Yet Trump had no qualms about engaging in racially offensive comments of his own over the weekend…”

“The fresh controversies underscored the GOP’s ongoing struggles over the issue of race, even as condemnations from senior Republicans of King’s remarks grew louder on Monday and lawmakers argued that his voice didn’t represent the party.”

Republicans Plot Strategy to Retake the House

January 15, 2019 at 6:59 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Republicans are crafting an early strategy to take back the House in 2020, zeroing in on districts carried by President Trump that recently flipped to Democrats and starting a recruitment process that will have a heavy emphasis on female candidates,” The Hill reports.

“After losing 40 GOP-held seats in the 2018 midterm elections, House Republicans will need to rebound in many of the suburban districts where Trump remains unpopular among some college-educated and female voters — this time with the president at the top of the ticket.”

Trump Discussed Pulling U.S. from NATO

January 15, 2019 at 6:43 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “There are few things that President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia desires more than the weakening of NATO, the military alliance among the United States, Europe and Canada that has deterred Soviet and Russian aggression for 70 years. Last year, President Trump suggested a move tantamount to destroying NATO: the withdrawal of the United States. Senior administration officials told The New York Times that several times over the course of 2018, Mr. Trump privately said he wanted to withdraw from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.”

“Current and former officials who support the alliance said they feared Mr. Trump could return to his threat as allied military spending continued to lag behind the goals the president had set. In the days around a tumultuous NATO summit meeting last summer, they said, Mr. Trump told his top national security officials that he did not see the point of the military alliance, which he presented as a drain on the United States.”

Trump Steps Up Pressure on Democrats

January 15, 2019 at 6:37 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Playbook: “The White House sent a bunch of moderate House Democrats invitations to meet with the president… The idea is twofold: The White House is trying to show activity and is trying to look reasonable by hosting “negotiation” meetings. In a practical sense, it is also a play to try and build pressure on Speaker Nancy Pelosi.”

“We’re In uncharted waters here, since this is now by far the longest shutdown ever. It’s also the most intractable negotiation we’ve ever seen. So it stands to reason that the White House is trying to do something — anything — to unlock the negotiation. We’re skeptical this will work, at least immediately, because the House isn’t the Senate.”

“Any deal will have to be a Pelosi-Schumer-Trump production. Getting a few moderates to moan will grab cable headlines, but won’t change the fact that most House Democrats remain firmly opposed to President Trump and his wall, and Pelosi understands that better than anyone.”

Trump and Lawmakers Paralyzed Over Shutdown

January 14, 2019 at 10:16 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump’s dismissals of his own party’s calls for compromise and his seeming indifference to shuttered federal agencies left the snowbound capital paralyzed Monday, with lawmakers in both parties scrambling to jump-start talks but increasingly uncertain about Trump’s interest in ending the longest government shutdown in history,” the Washington Post reports.

“Trump’s unyielding stance and lack of an evident plan to broker an end to the 24-day impasse comes at a fragile moment for his presidency, following a weekend at the White House during which he lashed out at critics large and small on Twitter and faced deeper scrutiny of his relationship with Russian leaders.”

Mueller Probes Event With Nunes and Flynn

January 14, 2019 at 9:15 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Special counsel Robert Mueller and federal prosecutors in Manhattan “are scrutinizing a meeting involving former House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes, one-time National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, and dozens of foreign officials,” the Daily Beast reports.

“The breakfast has come under scrutiny by federal prosecutors in Manhattan as part of their probe into whether the Trump inaugural committee misspent funds and if donors tried to buy influence in the White House.”

Trump Again Rejects Mueller Request for Interview

January 14, 2019 at 8:05 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump’s team “rebuffed special counsel Robert Mueller’s request in recent weeks for an in-person session with Trump to ask follow-up questions,” CNN reports.

“The request was made after Trump’s team submitted written answers to a limited number of questions from Mueller’s team focusing on before Trump was in office.”

House GOP Strips Steve King of Committee Assignments

January 14, 2019 at 8:00 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

House Republican leaders moved to strip Rep. Steve King (R-IA) of his committee assignments over his comments about white nationalism, the Washington Post reports.

Said House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy: “We will not be seating Steve King on any committees in the 116th Congress.”

“The decision was unanimous. It must be ratified by all House Republicans.”

Republicans Should Attack Trump’s Racism Too

January 14, 2019 at 7:38 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Michael Gerson: “In their criticism of Rep. Steve King, you get the sense that Republicans are actually relieved to be in the position of attacking racism for a change, instead of being forced to defend it from the president. They seem to be signaling that they are not really the bigots they appear to be. Republicans seem desperate to explain that they are normal and moral — despite all the evidence. Attacking King reveals some sense of shame at what they have become.”

“Yet, in the end, Republican critics of King manage to look worse rather than better. If racism is the problem, then President Trump is a worse offender. And the GOP’s relative silence on Trump is a sign of hypocrisy and weakness.”

“By any standard, Trump says things that are reckless, wrong, abhorrent, offensive and racist. Until Republicans can state this reality with the same clarity and intensity that they now criticize King, they will be cowards in a time crying for bravery.”

Romney Hits Trump for Shielding Putin Conversations

January 14, 2019 at 7:30 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) slammed President Trump for communicating with Russian President Vladimir Putin without keeping “careful records” of it, CNN reports.

Said Romney: “It’s inappropriate for the president of or country to communicate with the president of another global power without having people there keeping careful records to make sure what is said by both parties is followed up upon.”

Trump Can’t Stop Coal Plant Closures

January 14, 2019 at 7:26 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“More U.S. coal-fired power plants were shut in President Trump’s first two years than were retired in the whole of Barack Obama’s first term, despite the Republican’s efforts to prop up the industry to keep a campaign promise to coal-mining states,” Reuters reports.

“Trump has tried to roll back rules on climate change and the environment adopted during the Obama administration to fulfill pledges to voters in states like West Virginia and Wyoming.”

McConnell Slams Steve King Over Racist Remarks

January 14, 2019 at 5:02 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell became the highest-ranking Republican to speak out against Rep. Steve King (R-IA) following his racially charged comments, saying that there is ‘no place in the Republican Party, the Congress or the country for an ideology of racial supremacy of any kind,” the Washington Post reports.

Said McConnell: “I have no tolerance for such positions and those who espouse these views are not supporters of American ideals and freedoms. Rep. King’s statements are unwelcome and unworthy of his elected position. If he doesn’t understand why ‘white supremacy’ is offensive, he should find another line of work.”

Ivanka Trump Not Being Considered for World Bank Post

January 14, 2019 at 3:39 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump’s daughter, Ivanka, is overseeing the internal search for a nominee to lead the World Bank — but is not herself a candidate for the job, according to the White House,” Politico reports.

“The World Bank’s current president, Jim Yong Kim, announced last week that he will step down next month, touching off speculation about his replacement.”

The Financial Times reported that Ivanka Trump’s name was “floating around Washington” as one possibility.

Bipartisan Senate Group Looks to Break Stalemate

January 14, 2019 at 3:23 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A bipartisan group of rank-and-file senators are planning to hold discussions on how to end the weeks-long government shutdown, with talks between congressional leaders and the White House at a standstill,” the Washington Post reports.

“Prospects for achieving any results are uncertain as the group begins meeting this week or even fully launch. But the group’s creation is a sign senators of both parties are eager to end the shutdown, even if it means taking matters into their own hands amid an impasse between top Democrats and President Trump.”
