McCain’s Funeral Offered Hope

September 2, 2018 at 4:11 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Max Boot: “I have come to feel pessimistic lately about the future of America — demoralized because so many of my fellow citizens have endorsed a demagogue who threatens our democracy. But the McCain funeral offered a welcome moment of hope and grace —  a promise of deliverance — at a dark time in our nation’s history. It affirmed what McCain himself said in his farewell statement when he affirmed his ‘heartfelt faith in Americans.'”

“I despair today a little less after the uplifting spectacle of the McCain funeral. I left feeling, as no doubt the funeral’s architect and honoree intended, re-energized in my desire to fight for the principles that he dedicated his life to. I hope others feel the same way. Together we can restore the tarnished beauty of America.”

Ethnicity Not a Factor In Warren’s Rise

September 2, 2018 at 11:53 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“In the most exhaustive review undertaken of Elizabeth Warren’s professional history, the Boston Globe found clear evidence, in documents and interviews, that her claim to Native American ethnicity was never considered by the Harvard Law faculty, which voted resoundingly to hire her, or by those who hired her to four prior positions at other law schools. At every step of her remarkable rise in the legal profession, the people responsible for hiring her saw her as a white woman.”

Bonus Quote of the Day

September 2, 2018 at 11:48 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“If you look at our battlefield, 55 districts, the president is underwater in every one of those 55 districts across America.”

— DCCC Chairman Ben Ray Luján, quoted by the Wall Street Journal.

Kasich Would Only Run for President as a Republican

September 2, 2018 at 11:27 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Ohio Gov. John Kasich (R) told CBS News that if he runs for president in 2020, he’ll do so as a Republican and not as an independent.

Said Kasich: “I’m a Republican.”

He noted that the Republican Party is in a “tug of war” but ultimately “worth fighting for.”

However, Kasich also said while he supports his party in the midterms, there are a number of Republicans he called “dividers” who he will not be campaigning for.

Tibbetts’ Father Tells Conservatives to Stop

September 2, 2018 at 11:22 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rob Tibbetts, the father of Mollie Tibbetts, the Iowa college student who was allegedly murdered by someone in the U.S. illegally, implored anti-immigration activists to stop using his daughter’s death for political purposes in a Des Moines Register op-ed:

At the outset, politicians and pundits used Mollie’s death to promote various political agendas. We appealed to them and they graciously stopped. For that, we are grateful.

Sadly, others have ignored our request. They have instead chosen to callously distort and corrupt Mollie’s tragic death to advance a cause she vehemently opposed. I encourage the debate on immigration; there is great merit in its reasonable outcome. But do not appropriate Mollie’s soul in advancing views she believed were profoundly racist…

Please leave us out of your debate. Allow us to grieve in privacy and with dignity. At long last, show some decency. On behalf of my family and Mollie’s memory, I’m imploring you to stop.

Quote of the Day

September 2, 2018 at 11:13 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“I think we should point out the reality of all the good things this administration has done… Over the next two months Republicans just have to point out the success, and it’s been an astonishing success.”

— Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI), in an interview with ABC News, when asked how Republican candidates should handle President Trump’s high disapproval rating.

Manafort’s Daughter Seeks to Change Her Name

September 2, 2018 at 10:53 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Paul Manafort’s daughter, Jessica, has filed paperwork to officially change her last name to her mother’s maiden name, Bond, the New York Post reports.

She said that she’s seeking the name change “to separate myself and my work from a public perception that has nothing to do with the person that I am.”

Pirro Says Trump Was Framed

September 2, 2018 at 7:27 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Fox News host Jeanine Pirro said that she believes various forces in Washington have conspired to “frame” President Trump and bog down his administration with scandal and controversy, The Hill reports.

Said Pirro: “Nobody is looking at the corruption. It’s all one-sided, the corruption on the part of the Democrats. This president was framed. It’s that simple.”

DeSantis Slams Gillum as Far-Left Candidate

September 2, 2018 at 7:24 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) is going after his Florida gubernatorial rival Andrew Gillum (D)as the GOP congressman seeks to move on from controversy surrounding a racially-charged remark made last week, The Hill reports.

Said DeSantis: “This Andrew Gillum, he’s on the far-left socialist fringe. He’s a Bernie Sanders, Ocasio-Cortez type candidate.”

He added: “If you have a guy like this enacting a socialist agenda it’s going to absolutely destroy all the progress that Florida has made. He wants to turn Florida in to Venezuela.”

Predictable Court Fight Is Sign of Broken Process

September 2, 2018 at 6:48 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Senate on Tuesday will begin what is expected to be a contentious but predictable Supreme Court showdown under a judicial confirmation process that appears to be almost irreversibly damaged and polarized,” the New York Times reports.

“The elimination of the 60-vote filibuster against most judicial nominees by Democrats in 2013 and by Republicans against Supreme Court nominees in 2017 has upended the Senate’s role of offering advice and consent on the president’s picks. It now allows the majority party free rein to push through nominees with little to no consideration for the views or objections of the minority — a major break in Senate tradition.”

Ex-Diplomat Calls Out Trump ‘Insanity’ on Canada

September 1, 2018 at 11:21 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former U.S. Ambassador to Canada Bruce Heyman told CNBC that President Trump risks seriously damaging the relationship between Canada and the U.S. as he pushes toward a new North American Free Trade Agreement.

Said Helman: “The definition of insanity, just listening to the president there, is how the president has been treating Canada all this time. You know, this is our best trading partner in the world.”

Graham Invited Ivanka Trump to McCain Funeral

September 1, 2018 at 11:11 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Ms. Trump was asked to attend earlier in the week by Senator Lindsey Graham, a close friend of Mr. McCain’s who had cleared his invitation with the senator’s widow, according to a White House official who spoke on the condition of anonymity. Mr. Graham invited Ms. Trump after she expressed her condolences to him during a meeting on Capitol Hill this week.”

Microwave Weapons Suspected in Ills at U.S. Embassy

September 1, 2018 at 9:29 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “During the Cold War, Washington feared that Moscow was seeking to turnmicrowave radiation into covert weapons of mind control.”

“More recently, the American military itself sought to develop microwave arms that could invisibly beam painfully loud booms and even spoken words into people’s heads. The aims were to disable attackers and wage psychological warfare.”

“Now, doctors and scientists say such unconventional weapons may have caused the baffling symptoms and ailments that, starting in late 2016, hit more than three dozen American diplomats and family members in Cuba and China. The Cuban incidents resulted in a diplomatic rupture between Havana and Washington.”

Trump Allies Urge Counterattack After McCain Funeral

September 1, 2018 at 7:57 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump’s allies “went on the counterattack Saturday after tributes to the late Sen. John McCain took pointed aim at the president,” Politico reports.

“As Washington mourned McCain, Trump’s people grew angry. Some even hoped for — but didn’t get — a blistering tweet from the president. And they privately chastised Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, Trump’s daughter and son-in-law, for attending the senator’s memorial service.”

”McCain’s service was, on one level, a return to old Washington civility, with Republicans and Democrats, past presidents, friends and foes gathered in unity. But as its tributes echoed with overt criticism of the president, it only deepened the hostility between the city’s establishment and the outsider in the White House.”

The Biggest Resistance Meeting Yet

September 1, 2018 at 7:52 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Susan Glasser: “McCain’s grand funeral—the Obama adviser David Axelrod called it an exercise in ‘civic communion’—underscored a fact that is often lost about Washington these days. The city is much more bipartisan, in some respects, than it has ever been, more united than it may currently seem, in its hatred of Donald Trump.”

“Some are more forthright about this than others, for understandable reasons. Others are circumspect, especially the elected Republican officials who have now publicly bowed to Trump after trying and failing to stop his ascendance in their party. But their presence at McCain’s funeral suggested that the final chapter has not yet been written in the Republican drama over what to do about the crude interloper who has taken over their party. McCain certainly died hoping for something other than the current, slavish devotion to Trump that many Republicans on Capitol Hill now profess, and that is what his funeral was meant to remind us.”
