Democrats Openly Flirt with 2020 White House Bids

November 13, 2018 at 7:11 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Associated Press: “Running for president used to involve a familiar routine, with potential candidates spending months publicly demurring about their ambitions and professing to be content in their current roles. Advisers labored to keep meetings with donors and potential staff under wraps ahead of formal, carefully choreographed campaign announcements.”

“This time around, many Democrats believe it would be too risky to wait much longer before making their intentions known, particularly those with lower national profiles who could quickly be overshadowed by a field that could have more than two dozen candidates.”

“There are practicalities to consider, given the limited supply of money and top-flight staff available to run a campaign. But another driving factor is more visceral: Democrats are simply eager to take on the president.”

The GOP’s Doomsday Scenario for 2020

November 13, 2018 at 7:04 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Axios on three factors that should worry President Trump and the GOP:

  • The midterm results were actually a terrible leading indicator for him. Turns out that without Hillary atop the ticket, Midwest states like Wisconsin are tough for Trump, and Southern states with rising Hispanic populations are slowly growing more Democratic. Long term, the GOP should be freaking out about this.
  • Trump and the GOP face two years of public investigations, coming from three different and dangerous directions: Robert Mueller, the state of New York and Congress. Two years of probing hell await.
  • The prolonged recovery is on borrowed time, and a recession could well hit at the worst possible time for Trump — in the thick of the presidential race. Live by the markets, die by the markets.

Just 21% of Incoming Democrats Want to Impeach Trump

November 13, 2018 at 7:01 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

According to a Washington Post analysis of statements made during the campaign by the 52 Democrats who won election to the House this year, only 11 — or 21% — have said they want to immediately move to impeach President Trump.

“Thirteen Democratic freshmen outright oppose impeachment and the largest number — 17 Democrats or 33 percent — said they wanted to see Robert Mueller’s report on Russian interference in the 2016 election and whether Trump officials had links to the Kremlin before deciding whether to move ahead on impeaching the president.”

Whitaker Appointment Heads to the Courts

November 13, 2018 at 6:31 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Justice Department is expected to publish a legal opinion in support of Matthew Whitaker’s installation as acting attorney general as early as Tuesday… following questions about whether he can legally serve in the role,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“The department’s Office of Legal Counsel is expected to say that President Trump had the ability to appoint Mr. Whitaker.”

New York Times: “The State of Maryland is expected to ask a federal judge on Tuesday for an injunction declaring that Mr. Whitaker is not the legitimate acting attorney general as a matter of law, and that the position — and all its powers — instead rightfully belongs to the deputy attorney general, Rod Rosenstein.”

Republicans On Their Own In the Lame Duck

November 13, 2018 at 6:20 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Playbook: “As we enter the lame-duck session of Congress, it seems fair to assume that Republicans might have to bear the brunt of any big-time legislating on their own. Can Democratic leadership cut any deal with President Trump in the midst of a battle for speaker of the House? Can Democrats have their fingerprints on any deal that results in a border wall? Furthermore, what incentive do House Democrats have to do anything with the president in the lame duck when they will have the majority in something like 60 days?”

Pelosi Warns Against Ousting a Woman

November 13, 2018 at 6:10 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Nancy Pelosi is making gender a central part of her bid to reclaim the speaker’s gavel — leaning hard into the pitch that Democrats cannot oust the only woman at their leadership table following a historic election for women,” Politico reports.

“In addition to arguing she’s the best qualified for the job, the California Democrat and her allies are also framing a Pelosi victory as a matter of protecting political progress for women at a critical moment. Push her out, and men may take over the party at a time when more than 100 women are heading to Capitol Hill and after women voters have been thoroughly alienated by President Donald Trump. Embrace her, and she’ll prioritize legislation empowering women from equal pay to anti-harassment legislation.”

Inside the GOP Effort to Discredit a Recount

November 12, 2018 at 11:01 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The concerted effort by Republicans in Washington and Florida to discredit the state’s recount as illegitimate and potentially rife with fraud reflects a cold political calculation: Treat the recount as the next phase of a campaign to secure the party’s majority and agenda in the Senate,” the New York Times reports.

“That imperative — described by Republican lawyers, strategists and advisers involved in the effort — reflects the G.O.P.’s determination to tighten its hold on power in the narrowly divided Senate. The outcome of the Florida race will decide whether the party controls as many as 53 seats and has a freer hand to confirm Republican-backed judges with the vote of the man at the center of the recount, Gov. Rick Scott, who is trying to oust a three-term Democrat, Bill Nelson.”

Trump Will Oust Nielsen at Homeland Security

November 12, 2018 at 10:46 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump has decided to remove Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, and her departure from the administration is likely to occur in the coming weeks, if not sooner,” the Washington Post reports.

“Trump canceled a planned trip with Nielsen this week to visit U.S. troops at the border in South Texas and told aides over the weekend he wants her out as soon as possible. The president has grumbled for months about what he views as Nielsen’s lackluster performance on immigration enforcement and is believed to be looking for a replacement who will implement his policy ideas with more alacrity.”

Pelosi Moves to Lock Down Votes for Speaker

November 12, 2018 at 8:41 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi “is moving aggressively to snuff out a challenge from some lawmakers who are demanding new party leadership, while powerful allies outside Congress are helping rally support for her bid for speaker,” the Washington Post reports

“Pelosi has yet to clinch the necessary votes and is leaving nothing to chance, according to members and aides familiar with her approach. She is encouraging outside groups to speak up on her behalf while personally talking to the Democrats who will choose the next speaker on Jan. 3.”

McSally Concedes Arizona Senate Race

November 12, 2018 at 8:36 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Martha McSally (R), who was locked in a too-close-to-call race with Kyrsten Sinema (D), called her opponent and conceded Monday after Sinema’s lead widened, the Arizona Republic reports.

“The concession marked the end of a heated neck-and-neck battle between McSally and Sinema over who would fill the seat Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) decided not to defend.”

Tape May Link Khashoggi Killing to Crown Prince

November 12, 2018 at 7:31 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Shortly after the journalist Jamal Khashoggi was killed last month at the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul, a member of the kill team instructed a superior over the phone to ‘tell your boss,’ believed to be Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, that the operatives had carried out their mission,” the New York Times reports.

“The recording, shared last month with the C.I.A. director, Gina Haspel, is seen by intelligence officials as some of the strongest evidence linking Prince Mohammed to the killing of Mr. Khashoggi, a Virginia resident and Washington Post columnist whose death prompted an international outcry.”

Mueller’s Prosecutors Working on a Holiday

November 12, 2018 at 6:20 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Although it was a federal holiday today, CNN reports that at least eight prosecutors working for special counsel Robert Mueller were in the office today.

Law and Crime: “So while federal courts may be closed and there’s ‘no reason to believe; a grand jury is meeting, it’s still within the realm of possibility that Michael Cohen in D.C. + numerous Mueller prosecutors work = the precursor to something bigger.”

Trump’s Hard Move Towards Authoritarianism

November 12, 2018 at 5:52 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

This piece is only available to Political Wire members.

When President Trump demanded a halt to the recount in Florida this morning, he crossed a dangerous line for our democracy. He accused Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL) — with no evidence whatsoever — of committing fraud in an attempt to steal the election.

Jerome Corsi Expects to Be Indicted

November 12, 2018 at 5:39 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jerome Corsi, a conspiracy theorist linked to Roger Stone and who was subpoenaed to testify in Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation, told ABC News that he’s expecting an indictment from the special counsel soon.

Said Corsi: “I don’t know what they’re going to charge me with… I think my only crime was that I support Donald Trump. That’s my crime, and now I’m going to go to prison for the rest of my life for cooperating with them.”

Georgia Officials Ordered to Count All Absentee Votes

November 12, 2018 at 5:35 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Georgia Secretary of State Robyn Crittenden told county election officials to count absentee ballots even if they lack a voter’s date of birth, as long as the voter’s identity can be verified, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reports.

Brian Kemp (R) holds the lead over Stacey Abrams (D) in the race to become Georgia’s governor. Abrams would need to gain more than 20,000 votes to force the race into a runoff.

Will Tom Vilsack Run Against Joni Ernst?

November 12, 2018 at 3:58 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Iowa Starting Line reports on speculation that former Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack (D) may challenge Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA) in 2020.

“Vilsack remains one of the most popular figures in Iowa politics, with extremely high ratings among Democrats based on polling from this past cycle. He won 49 Iowa counties in his first race in 1998 and 68 of them in 2002. Democrats long for the days where they could actually be competitive again in rural Iowa, and the former Secretary of Agriculture for Barack Obama might be the perfect person to do just that.”

“Vilsack would start with a great national fundraising network. A run by him would probably clear the field of any of the more traditional Democratic contenders, but that doesn’t mean he’d be totally unopposed. A proven winner, his run would turn Iowa into one of Democrats’ top pick-up targets in the country.”

A Dangerous New Phase of the Voting Wars

November 12, 2018 at 3:37 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rick Hasen: “With Florida set this week to undertake a massive and massively politicized recount in the critical races for governor and senator, the way that election fight has played out so far has been an absolute nightmare. Perhaps most terrifyingly of all, the 2018 Florida elections have demonstrated the real possibility that President Donald Trump might attempt to ignore an unfavorable 2020 election outcome if the result is a slim loss by the president, a possibility that should give us all chills.”

“There’s no mincing words: We are entering into a dangerous new phase in the voting wars. Last week, various election calamities were fueled by incendiary and unsupported claims by Trump and others of fraud, by pockets of incompetence of election administration, by partisanship in election administration, and by continued fundamental defects in how our elections are conducted.”

Michael Cohen Mysteriously Arrives In Washington, D.C.

November 12, 2018 at 2:44 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Michael Cohen, President Trump’s former personal attorney and close associate, arrived in Washington, D.C., Monday morning, accompanied by one of his own criminal defense lawyers,” ABC News reports.
