February 16, 2025 at 8:58 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A federal appeals court on Saturday allowed the head of a government ethics watchdog agency, whom President Donald Trump fired last week, to stay on the job. It’s a decision that will likely tee up the fight over similar dismissals for the Supreme Court,” CNN reports.

“The appeals court decision let stand a restraining order that permits Hampton Dellinger to temporarily remain in his post as special counsel. Dellinger, who was serving a five-year term, was appointed by President Joe Biden.”

Democrats Confront Their Powerlessness

February 16, 2025 at 8:57 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Amid Democrats’ shock and bickering over how much to respond to President Donald Trump is a deeper question rippling through leaders across the Capitol and across the country: How much should they rely on the same institutional and procedural maneuvers they used during the first Trump term, and how much are they willing to wield their own wrecking balls?,” CNN reports.

“Democrats remain essentially leaderless, with prospective future presidential candidates largely sitting back and allowing others to be the first ones through the buzzsaw of Trump and his cheerleaders, none eager to be the face of a party just yet.”

Politico: Dems concede Republicans “running circles” around them online as Trump remakes Washington.

February 16, 2025 at 8:55 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Trump’s Tariff Plan Could Upend World Economy

February 16, 2025 at 6:35 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The world economy was already grappling with a perplexing assortment of variables, from geopolitical conflicts and a slowdown in China to the evolving complexities of climate change. Then, President Trump unleashed a plan to uproot decades of trade policy,” the New York Times reports.

“In starting a process to impose so-called reciprocal tariffs on American trading partners, Mr. Trump increased volatility for international businesses. He broadened the scope of his unfolding trade war.”

Trump May Grant Putin More Power in Europe

February 16, 2025 at 6:33 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Vladimir Putin of Russia shocked the audience at the annual security conference in Munich in 2007 by demanding the rollback of domineering American influence and a new balance of power in Europe more suitable to Moscow,” the New York Times reports.

“He didn’t get what he wanted — then.”

“Nearly two decades later, during the very same conference, top officials from President Trump’s cabinet made one thing clear: Mr. Putin has found an American administration that might help him realize his dream.”

ICE Struggles to Boost Arrest Numbers

February 15, 2025 at 8:59 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Since taking office, President Donald Trump has launched an all-of-government immigration crackdown with the urgency of a wartime effort, a mobilization comparable in scope to the responses to the 9/11 attacks and the coronavirus pandemic,” the Washington Post reports.

“But despite the rapid infusion of resources, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is struggling to arrest higher numbers of immigrants and falling far short of the administration’s goals.”

February 15, 2025 at 8:46 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

French President Emmanuel Macron is convening European leaders for an emergency summit in Paris on Monday, Politico reports.

Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski said that he expects the European leaders to discuss “in a very serious fashion” the challenges posed by President Donald Trump.

Said Sikorsky: “President Trump has a method of operating which the Russians call razvedka boyem —reconnaissance through battle: You push and you see what happens, and then you change your position. … And we need to respond.”

Trump Pledges to Treat Value Added Tax Like a Tariff

February 15, 2025 at 5:17 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump said Saturday the U.S. will treat value added tax systems the same as tariffs, for purposes of helping to calculate the reciprocal levies on other countries he ordered earlier this week,” Axios reports.

“At least 175 countries globally have a VAT, per the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, meaning it could impact the math on any reciprocal tariff for most nations around the world.”

“The impact could be most immediate in the European Union, which has standardized value added taxes with an average rate of almost 22%.”

Trump Uses Legal System to His Advantage

February 15, 2025 at 5:13 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Mr. Trump has long viewed the justice system as a battleground on which power is deployed for transactional political or personal ends. During his first term and more pointedly during his four years out of office, he saw himself on the receiving end of that dynamic.”

“And now that he is back in office, he is using his authority to reward allies and punish enemies.”

An Unchecked Trump Rapidly Remakes U.S. Government

February 15, 2025 at 5:10 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “At every step in his second term, Mr. Trump is demonstrating how unbound he is from prior restraints, dramatically remaking both domestic and foreign policy at a scale that has little parallel. His swift moves in his first month back in office underscore the confidence of an administration with a much firmer grip on the levers of government than during Mr. Trump’s last stint in the White House.”

“Long gone are the veterans of the Bush and Reagan administrations who pushed him to hew to more traditional conservative policies. In their place are a group of mostly America First Republicans helping Mr. Trump radically reset the country’s policies — as well as the billionaire Elon Musk, whom the president has unleashed to barrel through the bureaucracy.”

Is Corporate America Already Souring on Trump?

February 15, 2025 at 4:28 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Financial Times: “In private conversations, some Wall Street executives go much further. One senior investment banker says the disorder and unpredictability of Trump’s actions — and those of Elon Musk, the billionaire Tesla chief who has become one of his most senior lieutenants — was greater than many business leaders had anticipated.”

Said the banker: “With hindsight we did not appreciate the nature of what the administration was going to be like. I do believe they are hurting their stated objectives of peace and prosperity.”
