Inside a Chaotic White House

February 23, 2018 at 8:09 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Mike Allen: “The episodic drama is almost impossible to cover accurately, because the views reflected in the press often depend partly on which characters in the drama are most aggrieved at the moment, and which faction they belong to. Remember that President Trump thinks of each day as a new episode in a reality show, with him as the star, writer, producer and critic.”

“West Wing aides privately admit they have no earthly idea what Trump will do about anything — whether it be guns, immigration, their own careers, or the fate of Chief of Staff John Kelly.”

Support for Stricter Gun Laws Rises

February 23, 2018 at 8:01 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new CBS News poll finds 65% of Americans “now say laws covering the sale of guns should be stricter – an eight-point increase from December. It is the highest number recorded in this poll for stricter gun sale laws.”

“The rise has been primarily among Republicans and independents, with a large increase among Republicans from last December. Democrats remain in favor. “

It’s Not All About the NRA

February 23, 2018 at 7:58 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Amy Walter: “One of the most enduring and predictable answers is that the NRA squelches any and all forward movement on the issue of gun legislation. Many point to the power of the gun lobby as the most insidious and powerful force in all of politics.”

“However, pointing the finger at the gun lobby misses the underlying values that define the owning of a gun in the first place — the values of safety and freedom. In the American version of the ‘hierarchy of needs,’ these two values are at the top. According to Pew Research polling, 67 percent of gun owners own a weapon for ‘protection.’ Guns = safety and security. Those who want more gun restrictions argue that guns are often used to harm not protect. That even the most conscientious gun owners can cause accidents. But, gun owners don’t see things that way. That may not make sense to many of us who don’t own one, but it does to them.”

“Successful politicians and political movements meet people where they are, not where they believe they should be. Portraying the NRA as an all-powerful manipulator of gullible gun owners not only insults gun owners but only further deepens the cultural divide on the issue.”

Democrats Slam One of Their Own In Texas Primary

February 23, 2018 at 7:21 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The DCCC posted negative research on Laura Moser (D), a Houston journalist vying among six other Democrats in the March 6 primary to unseat Rep. John Culberson (R-TX), the Texas Tribune reports.

“Democrats locally and nationally have worried that Moser is too liberal to carry a race that has emerged in recent months as one of the most competitive races in the country. The DCCC posting, which features the kind of research that is often reserved for Republicans, notes that Moser only recently moved back to her hometown of Houston and that much of her campaign fundraising money has gone to her husband’s political consulting firm. It also calls her a ‘Washington insider.’

Kasich Gears Up for Possible Run in 2020

February 23, 2018 at 7:18 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Gov. John Kasich’s (R) inner circle “is gearing up for a possible presidential run in 2020 — actively weighing the prospect of a Republican primary challenge to President Donald Trump against the feasibility of a long-shot general election campaign as an independent,” Politico reports.

“And there’s one consideration driving their thinking perhaps more than any other: what some of his advisers consider the very real, maybe even likely, possibility that Trump doesn’t run again — by choice or not — or that the president becomes so politically hobbled by late next year that the political landscape fundamentally shifts in Kasich’s favor. That’s one reason Kasich has yet to decide whether to pursue an independent bid or a primary challenge.”

What’s Next for the NRA?

February 23, 2018 at 7:15 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Playbook: “They believe the CNN town hall has provided a visual that the masses in this country want changes to the gun laws of this country. They believe this is false, despite polling that shows a movement in this direction. Seeing Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), a long-time ally, change his position under public pressure has many nervous that he is just the first Republican willing to make concessions on the issue.”

“Look for them to support, or at least not try to stop, legislation to ban bump stocks and close mental health loopholes. Raising the age limit for purchasing the AR-15 would be a lot tougher for them to swallow. Still, they realize that their biggest advantage has been winning elections. The stakes have never been higher for the NRA than in the 2018 midterm elections. And the president of the United States has publicly said the NRA wants to cut some sort of gun-control deal, so they’ll need to find some safe ground.”

Adelson Offers to Pay for Embassy In Jerusalem

February 23, 2018 at 7:08 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Trump administration is considering an offer from Republican mega-donor Sheldon Adelson to pay for at least part of a new U.S. embassy in Jerusalem,” the AP reports.

“Lawyers at the State Department are looking into the legality of accepting private donations to cover some or all of the embassy costs, the administration officials said. The discussions are occurring as the new embassy clears its final bureaucratic hurdles.”

February 22, 2018 at 10:25 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Jared Kushner has been unable to obtain a full security clearance in part because of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation,” CNN reports.

He “is unlikely to obtain the full clearance as long as the special counsel’s probe is ongoing.”

Missouri Governor Indicted

February 22, 2018 at 5:07 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens (R) was indicted on a felony invasion of privacy charge, the Kansas City Star reports.

“The charges stem from a 2015 affair and allegations that he threatened to release a nude photograph of the woman, taken while she was blindfolded and her hands were bound, if she ever spoke publicly about the affair.”

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch confirmed Greitens was taken into custody and then booked at the St. Louis Justice Center.

Nashville Mayor’s Phone Seized

February 22, 2018 at 5:05 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation says it has obtained nude photos of a woman taken on the phone of former Sgt. Rob Forrest, evidence that investigators believe shows Nashville Mayor Megan Barry (D) engaged in an affair with her former bodyguard while he was on duty,” the Tennessean reports.

“The photos are referenced in an affidavit in support of a search warrant that Nashville Judge Steve Dozier signed Tuesday seeking access to the contents of Barry’s cellphone… Documents show the TBI obtained a search warrant and took possession of Barry’s phone Friday. The mayor and her attorney have refused to share the passcode to unlock it.”

32 New Charges Filed Against Manafort and Gates

February 22, 2018 at 4:36 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“New charges were filed Thursday against former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and his business partner, ratcheting up the legal pressure on them as they prepare for a trial later this year,” the Washington Post reports.

“A new indictment has long been expected in special counsel Robert Mueller’s prosecution of Manafort and his right-hand man, Rick Gates, on fraud and money laundering charges. Manafort served as President Trump’s campaign chairman from June to August 2016. Gates also served as a top official on Trump’s campaign. The new indictment contains 32 counts, including tax charges.”

Meanwhile, the Daily Beast reports that Gates fired his lawyer and, contrary to recent media reports, he is not about to make a deal with Mueller.

Mattis Wants to Allow Transgender Troops

February 22, 2018 at 4:33 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis “is expected to propose to President Trump that transgender members of the U.S. military be allowed to continue serving despite the president’s call last summer for a ban on all transgender service,” the Washington Post reports.

Trump Proposes a Ratings System for Movies

February 22, 2018 at 3:49 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump suggested violent entertainment is to blame for mass shootings in the United States, the Daily Beast reports.

His solution: “You see these movies, they’re so violent. And yet a kid is able to see the movie if sex isn’t involved, but killing is involved. And maybe they have to put a rating system for that. You get into a whole very complicated, very big deal but the fact is that you are having movies come out that are so violent with the killing and everything else that maybe that’s another thing we’re going to have to discuss.”

“It was unclear whether Trump was aware that the Motion Picture Association of America already rates films based on graphic sexual or violent content; or if he was suggesting that ratings system needs to be overhauled.”

Extra Bonus Quote of the Day

February 22, 2018 at 3:19 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Democrats are the party of Lisa Simpson and Republicans are happily the party of Homer, Bart, Maggie and Marge.”

— Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), quoted by The Hill, comparing the gun control debate to the cartoon show “The Simpsons.”

February 22, 2018 at 3:10 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“In an awkward onstage appearance this week, Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner (R) drank a glass of chocolate milk to demonstrate his belief in diversity,” the Chicago Tribune reports.

Said Rauner: “It’s really, really good. Diversity!”

Official Focused on Election Security Being Shoved Aside

February 22, 2018 at 3:02 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The head of a federal agency who has helped U.S. states protect election systems from possible cyber attacks by Russia or others is being removed from his post by Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) and the White House,” Reuters reports.

“Matthew Masterson, currently chairman of the U.S. Election Assistance Commission, has been passed over for a second four-year term as one of the agency’s four commissioners… It is up the House speaker to recommend a nominee for the commissioner post that Masterson currently holds, with the president then making a formal nomination.”

Rick Hasen: “Masterson, a Republican appointee has been completely nonpartisan and professional, and willing to work across the aisle on issues… And it suggests he’s being canned because he’s not a party hack.”

Trump Has Led to More Law School Applicants

February 22, 2018 at 2:36 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Above the Law: “We’ve known for a while that more people are taking the LSAT — we’re talking a double-digit increase. But exactly why has largely remained a source of speculation and anecdotal reports that the surprising results of the 2016 election were motivating people to go to law school. Now we have the hard data to support that hypothesis.”

“Kaplan Test Prep conducted a survey of over 500 pre-law students and the results confirm the suspicions of many in the industry: the Trump Bump is real. Thirty-two percent of respondents said politics were a motivating factor in deciding to apply.”

Mueller Knows How to Keep a Secret

February 22, 2018 at 2:30 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

BuzzFeed News: “More than nine months into special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation — the most-watched, most-speculated-about criminal probe in recent history — his office continues to unveil new criminal charges that catch the press, the public, and the political world off guard.”

“Prosecutors are bound by confidentiality and ethics rules not to disclose information about pending criminal investigations, and grand jurors and court employees involved in grand jury proceedings are barred from talking about their work. It’s common for criminal charges to come as a surprise. But Mueller’s ability to control the flow of information in such a high-profile investigation and deliver a shock with the revelation of a new case has stood in contrast to the steady stream of behind-the-scenes stories coming out of the Trump administration.”
