Trump’s Cable News Cabinet

August 29, 2018 at 7:26 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “After watching Sean Hannity on Fox News, President Trump tweeted at Attorney General Jeff Sessions to investigate former rival Hillary Clinton. After listening to Tucker Carlson, he directed Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to launch a study on bogus reports of murdered white farmers in South Africa.”

“And after Fox Business Network’s Lou Dobbs highlighted a questionable claim about Google search results, Trump took to Twitter early Tuesday to complain — prompting his top economic adviser to promise an investigation.”

“Cable television news hosts and commentators are among the first voices that Trump hears in the morning and the last he listens to at night. Now he is increasingly relying on those voices in making decisions — often running afoul of his actual advisers in the process.”

GOP Hopes for Another Shot at Obamacare Repeal

August 29, 2018 at 7:19 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Senate Republicans say they would like Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey (R) to appoint a successor to late Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) who, unlike McCain, would support GOP legislation to repeal Obamacare,” The Hill reports.

“GOP lawmakers say they won’t have time to hold another vote to repeal the law in 2018 but vow to try again next year if they manage to keep their Senate and House majorities.”

Cindy McCain Wields Quiet Influence on Replacement

August 29, 2018 at 6:48 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Sen. John McCain’s widow Cindy hasn’t expressed any desire to serve out her late husband’s term in Washington — but she will wield immense influence over the selection of his replacement,” Politico reports.

“More than a dozen McCain family friends and Republicans familiar with the search said that while Cindy McCain isn’t expected to take an active political role, Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey wants to avoid alienating her as he heads into a tough reelection fight.”

The Merciless Men Behind Your Scam Calls

A New York Times reporter met Shahbaz, a scammer who used fake bank alerts to make victims panic. When confronted, he just laughed—no guilt, no remorse.

That’s how these people think: you’re not a person to them—you’re just a name, an address, and a phone number scraped from a website. That's how they find you.

Incogni deletes your exposed personal data from the web—the same data scammers buy to target victims. The less they can see about you, the safer you stay.

A Breakthrough Year for Black Candidates

August 29, 2018 at 6:42 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “A historic upset overturned Democratic politics in Florida, as Andrew Gillum, the liberal 39-year-old mayor of Tallahassee, overcame several aggressive opponents to become the first black nominee for governor in the state’s history. He campaigned on a bluntly liberal message, calling for a single-payer-style health care system at the state level, and he earned Bernie Sanders’ endorsement and crucial financial support from mega-donors on the left like Tom Steyer and George Soros.”

“His victory caps a season of breakthroughs for African-American Democrats running for powerful governorships, including next door in Georgia, where Stacey Abrams could become the country’s first black governor, and in Maryland, where Democrats nominated Ben Jealous, a former president of the N.A.A.C.P.”

McGahn Will Leave White House Soon

August 29, 2018 at 6:36 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Top White House officials and sources close to White House counsel Don McGahn tell Axios that McGahn will step down this fall — after Brett Kavanaugh is confirmed to the Supreme Court, or after the midterms.”

“That potentially puts a successor in charge of fielding a blizzard of requests or subpoenas for documents and testimony if Democrats win control of the House in the midterms. And if the White House winds up fighting special counsel Robert Mueller, an epic constitutional fight could lie ahead.”

McSally Will Face Sinema In Arizona Senate Race

August 28, 2018 at 11:56 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Martha McSally (R-AZ) defeated former Sheriff Joe Arpaio (R) and Kelli Ward (R) in the Arizona Republican Senate primary on Tuesday night, NBC News projects.

“McSally, a former fighter pilot, had been favored to prevail over the two conservatives, who split the anti-establishment vote. But McSally tacked far to the right in the primary, which could cause problems for her in what is expected to be a tough race against Democrat Kyrsten Sinema in November.”

Gillum Wins Florida Primary In Upset Victory

August 28, 2018 at 11:04 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Andrew Gillum (D) rode a late surge of African-American voters to an upset victory in the Democratic primary Tuesday and a historic opportunity to become the first black governor in Florida history,” the Miami Herald reports.

Vox: “Gillum is the first black Democratic gubernatorial candidate in Florida history. He won out over Gwen Graham, a former member of Congress, the daughter of a former governor and senator, and the presumed Democratic frontrunner; former Miami Beach Mayor Philip Levine; and businessman Jeff Greene. He will face Republican Ron DeSantis in November’s general election, a race that election forecasters have rated a toss-up.”

How McCain Asked Obama to Give His Eulogy

August 28, 2018 at 9:03 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

CNN: “It was a day in early April when Barack Obama received an unexpected call from McCain, who was battling brain cancer and said he had a blunt question to ask: Would you deliver one of the eulogies at my funeral?”

“Obama, who is responsible for extinguishing McCain’s second bid for the White House a decade ago, immediately answered that he would. He was taken aback by the request, aides say, as was George W. Bush, another former rival, who received a similar call from McCain this spring.”

Trump Privately Revived the Idea of Firing Sessions

August 28, 2018 at 6:33 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump, who levied extraordinary public attacks on Attorney General Jeff Sessions in recent weeks, has privately revived the idea of firing him in conversations with his aides and personal lawyers this month,” the Washington Post reports.

“His attorneys concluded that they have persuaded him — for now — not to make such a move while the special-counsel investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 presidential campaign is ongoing.”

“But there is growing evidence that Senate Republicans, who have long cautioned Trump against firing Sessions, are now resigned to the prospect that he may do so after the November midterm elections — a sign that one of the last remaining walls of opposition to such a move is crumbling.”

McCain’s Pallbearer Choice is Final Dig at Putin, Trump

August 28, 2018 at 5:59 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Even in death, John McCain has one final burn planned for two of his biggest foes — Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump — at a moment when much of the world will be watching,” Politico reports.

“The Republican senator from Arizona, who planned his own funeral, chose Russian dissident Vladimir Kara-Murza as one of the dignitaries to carry his coffin to the front of the Washington National Cathedral at Saturday’s memorial service.”

Cruz Allies Sound the Alarm

August 28, 2018 at 5:52 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Republicans are sounding the alarm about Texas Sen. Ted Cruz’s closer-than-expected reelection contest, with an influential conservative group racing to his aid,” Politico reports.

“The Club for Growth, a Washington-based anti-tax group, is drawing up plans for a major TV ad campaign boosting Cruz — the first such intervention by a Republican outside group in this race. The move comes as Democratic Rep. Beto O’Rourke, an online fundraising behemoth who has attracted national support, continues to narrow the gap in polling.”

Mysterious Figure In Russia Probe Sought Trump Contacts

August 28, 2018 at 5:45 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Sergei Millian remains one of the enduring mystery figures of the ongoing probe of Russian interference in the 2016 elections,” ABC News reports.

“The obscure Belarusian-born businessman and naturalized American citizen once boasted about his past work pushing Trump properties to Russian buyers and aggressively sought to get close to the Trump team both during and immediately after the campaign. He sought to befriend a half-dozen key Trump advisers, ABC News has learned, and attended Trump’s inauguration and posted volumes of pro-Trump tweets.”

“Congressional investigators have been trying for months to serve him a subpoena for testimony – but their process servers cannot find him.”

Pence Says Democrats Not Being Respectful to Kavanaugh

August 28, 2018 at 4:44 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Vice President Mike Pence blamed a lack of progress on Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court in the Senate on Democrats, tweeting that in a more “respectful time” Kavanaugh would already be on the court.

Said Pence: “Justice Antonin Scalia was confirmed 98-0 and Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg received support of 96 Senators. If we lived in a more respectful time, Judge Brett Kavanaugh would be overwhelmingly confirmed by the United States Senate.”

Trump Falsely Told Christian Leaders He Got Rid of a Law

August 28, 2018 at 4:13 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“In a closed-door meeting with evangelical leaders Monday night, President Trump repeated his debunked claim that he had gotten ‘rid of’ a law forbidding churches and charitable organizations from endorsing political candidates,” NBC News reports.

“In fact, the law remains on the books, after efforts to kill it in Congress last year failed. But Trump cited this alleged accomplishment as one in a series of gains he has made for his conservative Christian supporters.”

He also warned: “You’re one election away from losing everything that you’ve got” while adding that their opponents were “violent people” who would overturn these gains “violently.”

The New York Times reports Trump urged the religious leaders to use “their newfound freedom” to campaign from the pulpit on behalf of Republicans.

Said Trump: “You have people that preach to almost 200 million people — 150 to, close, depending on which Sunday we are talking about, and beyond Sunday, 100, 150 million people.”
