Pelosi Losing Support from More Democrats

June 21, 2018 at 5:25 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

At least 20 House Democratic challengers have publicly rejected House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi on the campaign trail, Politico reports.

“If Democrats win the House by a narrow margin, the 78-year-old leader could lose only a handful of lawmakers’ support and still secure the 218 votes needed to clinch the speakership in a floor vote.”

“Whether those statements translate into ‘no’ votes against Pelosi — when she’ll have enormous sway over new lawmakers’ committee assignments and other perks, and a presumably fierce whip effort on her behalf — is impossible to know.”

Young Immigrants Allege Abuse at Detention Center

June 21, 2018 at 2:39 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Immigrant children as young as 14 housed at a juvenile detention center in Virginia say they were beaten while handcuffed and locked up for long periods in solitary confinement, left nude and shivering in concrete cells,” the AP reports.

“The abuse claims against the Shenandoah Valley Juvenile Center near Staunton, Virginia, are detailed in federal court filings that include a half-dozen sworn statements from Latino teens jailed there for months or years. Multiple detainees say the guards stripped them of their clothes and strapped them to chairs with bags placed over their heads.”

West Virginia Justice Indicted on 22 Counts

June 21, 2018 at 2:22 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

West Virginia Supreme Court Justice Allen Loughry “was indicted on 22 counts, U.S. Attorney Mike Stuart announced this morning. Stuart said that if Loughry were convicted on each of the counts, the sentence would amount to almost 400 years,” West Virginia Metro News reports.

“The charges include fraud, false statement and witness tampering offenses.”

Loughry is the author of a political ethics book: Don’t Buy Another Vote, I Won’t Pay for a Landslide: The Sordid and Continuing History of Political Corruption in West Virginia.

Nearly All Canadians Dislike Trump

June 20, 2018 at 9:02 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Campaign Research poll in Canada finds that 81% of Canadians said they “disapproved” of the job President Trump is doing, while 11% approved and eight per cent didn’t know.

The poll also found 72% believe Trump’s protectionist policies have “harmed” the Canadian economy, while only 3% said they have “helped.”

Democrats Maintain Lead In Generic Ballot

June 20, 2018 at 8:10 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new CNN poll shows Democrats leading the generic House ballot by a solid margin, 50% to 42%.

“It’s way to early to predict which voters will turn out on election day, but the poll does suggest Democrats are still benefiting from an ‘enthusiasm gap.’ Fifty percent of Democratic voters saying they are extremely or very enthusiastic about voting compared to only 43% of Republicans who feel that way.”

Cohen Wants Trump to Pay His Legal Fees

June 20, 2018 at 7:36 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Michael Cohen has hired New York lawyer Guy Petrillo to represent him in a federal investigation into his business dealings, and has told associates he wants President Trump, his former boss, to pay his legal fees,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

Thousands of Kids Will Remain Apart from Families

June 20, 2018 at 6:41 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump caved to enormous political pressure on Wednesday and signed an executive order meant to end the separation of families at the border by detaining parents and children together for an indefinite period,” the New York Times reports.

“But Justice Department officials said it was not clear whether the practice of separating families could resume after 20 days if a federal judge refuses to give the government the authority it wants to hold families together for a longer period.”

“And a Health and Human Services official said that more than 2,300 children who have already been separated from their parents under the president’s ‘zero tolerance’ policy will not be immediately reunited with their families while the adults remain in federal custody during their immigration proceedings.“

Publisher of National Enquirer Subpoenaed

June 20, 2018 at 6:01 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Federal authorities have subpoenaed the publisher of the National Enquirer for records related to its $150,000 payment to a former Playboy model for the rights to her story alleging an affair with Donald Trump,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“The subpoena from Manhattan federal prosecutors requesting information from the publisher, American Media Inc., about its August 2016 payment to Karen McDougal is part of a broader criminal investigation of Mr. Trump’s former personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, they said.”

Is Trump’s Campaign Manager a Mueller Target?

June 20, 2018 at 5:38 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

First Read explains why Trump 2020 campaign manager Brad Parscale’s call for Attorney General Jeff Sessions to be fired is a big deal.

“Parscale is one of the key players in the 2016 Trump campaign who has not been interviewed by Mueller’s team. So he’s part of a club that includes Roger Stone, Paul Manafort, Donald Trump Jr. and Michael Cohen. All of them met with Congress, but not Mueller — hinting that they could all be targets.”

The Mad Man Theory Fails Again

June 20, 2018 at 5:21 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The following piece for members is by speechwriter Dan Conley.

Donald Trump’s political outlook was heavily influenced by Richard Nixon in 1972. You can hear it in his rhetoric when he talks about things “only I” can accomplish. This is pure Nixon and the universal praise he received that year for his opening to China. Only Nixon could go to China — it’s a maxim that’s lasted decades.

Lobbyist for Russian Oligarch Visited Assange 9 Times

June 20, 2018 at 5:13 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A longtime U.S. lobbyist for the Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska visited Julian Assange nine times at the Ecuadorian embassy in London last year,” according to visitor logs seen by the Guardian.

“Adam Waldman, who has worked as a Washington lobbyist for the metals tycoon since 2009, had more meetings with Assange in 2017 than almost anyone else… It is not clear why Waldman went to the WikiLeaks founder or whether the meetings had any connection to the Russian billionaire, who is now subject to US sanctions. But the disclosure is likely to raise further questions about the extent and nature of Assange’s alleged ties to Russia.”

North Dakota Candidate Defends Cages for Migrant Kids

June 20, 2018 at 5:02 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

North Dakota U.S. Senate candidate Kevin Cramer (R-ND) “pushed back hard on the idea that keeping border-crossing children in chain-link cages was inhumane, defending the practice in two local radio shows on Wednesday,” TPM reports.

Said Cramer: “By the way, chain link fences are around playgrounds all over America, all over North Dakota. And chain link fences allow line-of-sight visual connectivity with children and families. You know, there’s nothing inhumane about a chain link fence. If it is, then every ballpark in America is inhumane.”

Trump Surrenders

June 20, 2018 at 4:23 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The coverage of President Trump’s sudden reversal on his policy to separate migrant children from their parents at the border is universally brutal.

The Fix: “It’s at once an admission that the politics of the issue had gotten out of hand and that the administration’s arguments were completely dishonest. Virtually everything it said about the policy is tossed aside with this executive action. It’s the political equivalent of waving the white flag and the legal equivalent of confessing to making false statements. Rather than letting Congress rebuke it, the White House is rebuking itself and trying to save some face.”

Politico: “It was a remarkable shift from a president who is typically reluctant to bow to outside pressure. He often doubles down on his existing stance when confronted with criticism.”

McCain’s Campaign Manager Renounces the GOP

June 20, 2018 at 3:40 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Steve Schmidt, who was campaign manager for John McCain’s presidential bid in 2008, announced he was quitting the Republican party.

Said Schmidt: “29 years and nine months ago I registered to vote and became a member of the Republican Party which was founded in 1854 to oppose slavery and stand for the dignity of human life. Today I renounce my membership in the Republican Party. It is fully the party of Trump.”

Bonus Quote of the Day

June 20, 2018 at 3:20 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Stephen actually enjoys seeing those pictures at the border. He’s a twisted guy, the way he was raised and picked on. There’s always been a way he’s gone about this. He’s Waffen-SS.”

— An outside White House adviser, quoted by Vanity Fair, about Trump adviser Stephen Miller.

Voters More Focused on Control of Congress

June 20, 2018 at 3:16 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Pew Research survey finds “voter engagement is high when compared with comparable points in previous midterm cycles” and “a record share of registered voters (68%) say the issue of which party controls Congress will be a factor in their vote in November.”

“A 60% majority say they consider their midterm vote as essentially a vote either for Donald Trump (26%) or against him (34%). These are among the highest shares saying their view of the president would be a factor in their vote in any midterm in more than three decades.”

“In early voting intentions, 48% of registered voters say they would favor the Democratic candidate in their district, or lean toward the Democrat, while 43% favor the Republican or lean Republican.”

Giuliani Delays Decision on Mueller Interview

June 20, 2018 at 2:51 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rudy Giuliani told the Washington Post that President Trump’s decision on whether to sit for an interview with special counsel Robert Mueller “could be delayed until mid- to late July as his legal team assesses the impact of a new report by the Justice Department’s inspector general,” the Washington Post reports.

Said Giuliani: “I’m advising him to stay put, to hold our horses a little.”

But last night on Fox News, Giuliani sounded doubtful it would ever happen: “Do I look crazy? So far, you know, I still have all my senses, and I’m a heck of a lawyer. And I get drummed out of the profession if I did. I mean, the reality is, you don’t put your client in a kangaroo court.”

Cohen Resigns from RNC Post

June 20, 2018 at 2:45 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Michael Cohen, President Trump’s longtime confidant and former personal attorney, has resigned from his post as deputy finance chair of the Republican National Committee’s Finance Committee, sources close to the RNC told ABC News.

But Cohen notes the federal investigations into him weren’t the only reason for stepping down.

Said Cohen: “As the son of a Polish holocaust survivor, the images and sounds of this family separation policy is heart wrenching. While I strongly support measures that will secure our porous borders, children should never be used as bargaining chips.”
